Rushmere jr. sal die nasionale span se beurt more open.

Raubenheimer takes two five-fors to give Border double victory

Jason Raubenheimer hit an unbeaten 76 runs and took two five wicket-hauls, helping Border to double success in the T20 segment of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola under-19 Week on Tuesday.

The opening batsman’s 75 came off 62 balls (5 fours, 3 sixes) in their first match, which saw them beat North West by 56 runs. Josneil Long added a blistering 44 at a run-a-ball to help their side to 147/3 at the end of their allotted overs.

North West could not contend with the rampant attack from Border, the highest scores for them coming in the form of a 20 by Louis van Schalkwyk and 16 by Muhammad Suliman as Raubenheimer tore through the middle order and tail. His first five-for went for just 17 runs, giving his side an emphatic win.

Their second victory, was by a comfortable five wickets against Namibia in one of the lowest-scoring matches of the day. They restricted the neighbouring nation to 100 in 18 overs as Raubenheimer claimed 5/33 and Luke Dallas 3/14.

The young allrounder was dismissed without scoring in the second match, but the mantle was picked up by Sinethemba Qeshile (35 off 34 balls) and Matt Dewar (24 off 26) who steered the team in a winning direction.

In other matches, Boland claimed double conquests when they held their nerve to beat Limpopo by two wickets in their morning match and claimed a more comprehensive, 74-run win over Northern Cape in the afternoon.

Their second match saw the top order set up a daunting, 168-run target for the opposition. Vezokhule Mntungwa, Daniel du Plessis and Samuel Henders scored 59*, 49 and 46 respectively, helping their side to 167/4.

The bowlers did well with Garreth Wolmarans leading the attack taking 3/18. Achille Cloete (2/6), Kieran Dreyden (2/8) and Andries Janse van Rensburg (2/9) returned two wickets each and Marshin Jefstha chipped in with 1/27.

It was not a great day for Northern Cape, who had suffered a 54-run beating at the hands of their neighbour, Free State earlier in the day.

The Central side also went on to claim victory by 18 runs against Limpopo in the afternoon thanks to Pheko Moletsane who took a notable 4/15, restricting Limpopo to 122/8 in their 20 overs after they were set a 141-run target.

Elsewhere, Eastern Province was one of the teams that returned some of the most solid wins of the day. They started the day by beating Namibia by 41 runs, followed by a nine-wicket thrashing of North West.

Sinesipho Tsotsa (41 off 35) and Kenan Smith (33 off 22) starred with the bat in their morning fixture, followed by David Rushmere (51 not out off 46) and Campbelle de Wet (38 off 35) in the afternoon.

Other double wins came from Western Province, who were successful against Easterns in the morning by 35 runs and South Western Districts by eight wickets in the afternoon. SWD’s day also started with loss, by 18 runs at the hands of KwaZulu-Natal Inland, who followed up their win with another 11-run triumph over Easterns.

Gauteng’s middle order came to the party in their morning clash against Mpumalanga after they were reduced to 14/5 by Jacques Vosloo (3/23) and Jon Hinrichsen (2/20). Curtis Campher top scored with an unbeaten 39-ball 48 as he and Ntokozo Mahlaba, who was also not out on 30 off 37, shared a 67-run partnership to get their side to 115/6.

Jared Goncalves-Jardine was the chief destroyer for the home side, taking an exceptional 4/8 in his four-over spell. He had good backup from Mzukhona Buthelezi (2-0-8-2) and Campher (3-0-14-2) who returned two wickets a piece, tumbling Mpumalanga to 84/9 for their 31-run win.

Their afternoon fixture saw them beat KwaZulu-Natal Coastal by 13 runs in spite of Matthew Montgomery’s 53 off 46 balls.

  • Niemand not a nobody

    Niemand not a nobody

NewsGLouisvanSchalkwykThe second day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Johannesburg belonged to Jason Niemand of Border.

Niemand was named Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for an allround performance against Western Province. Niemand (131) recorded a century and boasted bowling figures of 2/38. He faced only 111 deliveries in his innings of which 14 was dispatched beyond the boundary rope. Three of these were maximums.

He and Sinethemba Qeshile (60) shared a 184-run partnership over the fourth wicket to help their team to 275/6. Both have represented the national u19-side in their careers.

Western Province just hanged on to secure a draw mostly thanks to Mihlali Mpongwana (33).

The only other century on the second day came off the bat of Francois Barnard of South Western Districts. Barnard struck 115 runs from 124 deliveries to help his side secure a victory on first innings against Namibia.

SWD’s fast bowler Jean Bruiner (4/30) also played a major part in the victory.

Mpumalanga’s spin bowler Faheem Nohami (5/32) picked up the only five-wicket haul of the second day as he kept Northern Cape’s batsmen guessing.

Free State’s batsmen had to show patience to secure a draw against Gauteng.

The hosts recorded 275/6 in their first innings thanks to some good batting by captain, Wandile Makwetu (91), Jacob Miltz (83) and Joshua Richards (52). Makwetu and Miltz shared a 152-run partnership over the third wicket.

Free State had to chase the total set or survive the 59 overs left. Garnett Tarr (33, 73b), CP Klijnhans (25, 68b), Gerald Coetzee (28, 89b) and Ruan Cronjé (12*, 55b) frustrated Gauteng’s bowling attack just enough to secure the draw.

Curtis Campher (4/16) and Kgaudisa Molefe (3/42) almost managed to secure the victory for the hosts.

The national u19-player Jade de Klerk and Tiaan Van Vuuren helped Eastern Province to a first innings victory over KwaZulu-Natal Inland with allround performances.

Van Vuuren was the pick of his side’s bowlers with figures of 3/25 and scored the most runs with the 54 runs that came off his bat.

De Klerk picked up three wickets for only 33 runs and added an unbeaten 39 runs with the bat in hand.

Northerns was the only team to secure an outright win on the opening day, but found themselves struggling against Boland on the second day.

Boland recorded 199 in their first innings, but had Northerns struggling at 84/7 before the latter had no other choice but to declare. Boland however still managed to secure a victory on the first innings.

Seamer Samuel Henderson (4/24) caused Northerns’ batsmen the most problems. He achieved some excellent help from Achille Cloete (3/11) from the other end.

For Northerns it was only Francois van Heerden with scores of 30 and 51 whom managed to resist Boland’s onslaught.

    Summarised Scorecards (Time Cricket):

Gauteng first innings 275/4 (Wandile Makwetu 91, Jacob Miltz 83, Joshua Richards 52; Donald Machalotsa 2/34); Free State first innings 134/9 (Garnett Tarr 33, Gerald Coetzee 28; Curtis Campher 4/16, Kgaudisa Molefe 3/42). Match drawn.

  • Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week Hero of the Day (Day 1)

Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week Hero of the Day (Day 1)

Gideon Peters from Northerns has been named the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for day 1 of the 2017 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week.

The prestigious Coca-Cola Hero of the Day award is presented on each day of the tournament in recognition of a game changing ‘hero’ moment. Gideon was selected for the award by a Coca-Cola appointed panel of cricket experts after he took 4 wickets and ran out a player to take the 5 required wickets in Border’s second innings to help Northerns win outright, a very rare outcome for the timed cricket games at the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week.

“Sometimes things just fall into place and work for you and that is what happened to me today. My captain only wanted me to bowl 2 overs but I felt like I was on a roll and had more wickets in me. I would like to thank my team mates for all the support they have given me both today and before the tournament,” said a delighted Peters.

“Gideon was outstanding in his bowling today, especially in the second innings. He was quick and accurate, and his performance was definitely the turning point of the game. Well done to him on a great performance,” said Proteas legend and Coca-Cola Hero of the Day panel lead Victor Mpitsang.

Phindile Phiri, Coca-Cola Africa’s Senior Communications Manager commented, “The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is Where Heroes Are Made and for Gideon this is hopefully just the beginning of a bright future in the game. On behalf of Coca-Cola Africa I extend my congratulations to him. I can’t wait to follow his career going forward as he works towards becoming a hero of South African cricket.”

  • Peters shines as Northerns claim only outright win on Day One of Coke Week

Peters shines as Northerns claim only outright win on Day One of Coke Week

A second-innings burst by Gideon Peters of Northerns saw him take four wickets for just seven runs to help secure the only outright victory, by an innings and 24 runs, against Border on the opening day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week in Johannesburg on Sunday.

The youngster from Hoërskool Waterkloof in Pretoria, took a total of six wickets for 38 in 12 overs, including three maidens. He (Peters 2/31), along with a phenomenal Christopher Britz (1.2-0-2-2) helped restrict the Eastern Cape side to 111 in their first innings after they won the toss and elected to bat first in the timed format.

Border slipped to 52/8, but were rescued by South Africa under-19s, ICC U19 World Cup selection Akhona Mnyaka. The fast bowler and number nine batsman returned an unbeaten 42 from 70 balls and shared a 55-run partnership with number 10 batsman, Sebastian Denison-Brown (11 off 64).

The pair returned to strike with the ball. Denison-Brown, the pick of the bowlers with his 3/48 and Mnyaka backing up the attack with 1/17. His SA U19s teammate, Jason Niemand made up for his disappointment with the bat, taking 2/12 in five overs, along with Siphamandla Krweqe (2/18) who also picked up a pair. Their efforts, while brave were not enough for the Northerns side, who were led to 143 thanks to a half-century by Britz (51 off 105), 26 by Thabo Motaung and 20 from another SA U19 World Cup selection, Hermann Rolfes.

Peters was nothing short of sensational in his attack of Border in their second innings. He took his four wickets in four overs and orchestrated the run out of Josneil Long (2 off 13). The batting side lost all five of those wickets for just eight runs, awarding the Pretoria team a most satisfying victory in the end.

Two centuries were also scored today, by Eastern Province’s David Rushmere (119 off 161) against Gauteng and Louis van Schalkwyk for North West when they took on Namibia.

In the EP/Gauteng game at University of Johannesburg’s Soweto campus, an impressive six-wicket haul by the home side’s Ntokozo Mahlaba (6/59) saw them secure victory on first innings scores in spite of Rushmere’s ton. He hit 13 fours and a six getting his side to a respectable 181 after the rest of the line-up fell victim to Mahlaba, with good support from Curtis Campher (2/36) and yet another SA U19 World Cup selection, Kgaudise Molefe (2/48).

Gauteng amassed 194/6 thanks to Jacob Miltz (53 off 96), Matthew Erasmus (45 off 86) and Campher (26 off 56). EP’s Jade de Klerk and Kenan Smith showed why they were also picked for the U19 World Cup taking place in New Zealand next year. They were the only bowlers who managed to strike for their team, taking a respective 3/40 in 19 overs, including four maidens and 2/74 in 18 with one maiden, but it was not enough to secure a win.

At Braamfischerville Cricket Oval, North West were helped to a first-innings conquest of Namibia thanks to Van Schalkwyk and Odirile Modimokoane. The latter took 4/33 in 14 overs including three maidens, confining the neighbours to 210 after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Gerhard Lottering top-scored for them with 58 off 112 deliveries, with assistance coming from Jan Nicol Loftie-Eaton (37 off 78), Ramon Wilmot (35 off 65) and Lohandre Louwrens (34 off 42).

Van Schalkwyk’s ton included nine boundaries as he and Muhammad Suliman (38 off 124) batted their side to 231.

In other first-innings victories; KwaZulu-Natal Inland secured triumph over Western Province when the sides met at Soweto Oval, Limpopo beat Northern Cape at Walter Milton A, South Western Districts held down a win over Easterns at Lenasia Stadium, while KwaZulu-Natal were victorious against Mpumalanga at KES John Hurry Main Oval.

Finally, at St David’s Main Oval, Boland and Free State’s clash ended in a draw.

Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week – Platform for identifying South Africa’s future heroes

The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is where South Africa’s future cricket heroes are made. The U19 cricket tournament will see over 200 of the top young players from around the country and neighbouring country Namibia, battle it out in an action-packed week. This year, the tournament returns to Johannesburg and will take place from 17-21 December 2017.

The tournament, which is synonymous in showcasing the best in the country’s, up and coming, youth cricket talent, has produced more than 80 Proteas since South Africa’s readmission into the international cricket arena. The recently capped Protea, Wiaan Mulder, captained Gauteng at the 2016 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week when he returned to the tournament for a third year in a row. In the same year, the allrounder was promoted to franchise cricket and played his maiden game for the bizhub Highveld Lions.

Following a brilliant 2016 cricket season, Mulder was chosen to lead the SA Schools team as they took on the SA Colts team during the annual Cubs Week tournament. This year proved to be a breakthrough year for the 19-year-old as he was selected to captain the Coca-Cola u19 team in matches against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, played in the SA A side and also made his debut for the Proteas in an ODI match against Bangladesh.

Phindile Phiri, Coca-Cola Africa’s Senior Communications Manager, Brand Experience commented, “Coca-Cola Africa has been a proud sponsor of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week for the past 39 years and we have witnessed some of the best cricket talent come through its ranks. It’s great to see players like Wiaan Mulder, who played in the tournament a year ago, be part of the Proteas setup. The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is a platform for identifying the best in youth cricket. We look forward to seeing more talent being unearthed at this year’s tournament.”

At this year’s Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week, Coca-Cola will once again be recognising standout players with the prestigious Coca-Cola Hero of the Day award. The Coca-Cola Hero of the Day is not necessarily the best player on the field, but the player that really stood out during the match. He could be the wicketkeeper who made an amazing dive catch, a tail-ender who smashed a reverse sweep for six to win the match or even the player showing sportsmanship and embodying the spirit of the gentleman’s game.

“The aim of the CSA Pipeline is for CSA to be the best cricket-playing nation in the world and to achieve this each level of the pipeline needs to play its strategic part,” commented CSA General Manager: Cricket, Corrie van Zyl. “Schools cricket has always been the backbone of the pipeline and it is important that this remains the case.”

Look out for the future heroes of South African cricket taking part at this year’s Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week from 17-21 December 2017.

Junior Boks to face hosts France at 2018 U20 Championship

JuniorSpringboksThe Junior Springboks have been drawn to face hosts France in Pool C of the 2018 World Rugby U20 Championship, which will be played across three cities in the south of France from Wednesday, 30 May to Sunday, 17 June.

The two other teams in the Junior Boks’ pool are Ireland and Georgia.

Defending champions, New Zealand, have been drawn in Pool A with Australia, Wales and Japan, while 2017 runners up, England, will take on Scotland, Italy and Argentina in Pool B.

The pool stages of the tournament will be hosted at the Stade Aimé Giral in Perpignan, Stade de la Méditerranée in Béziers and the Stade d’Honneur du Parc des Sports et de l’Amitié in Narbonne, with the venue for the semi-finals and final set to be announced in due course.

The Junior Springboks met France twice in this year’s tournament in Tbilisi, Georgia, where they drew 23-23 in their opening pool match, while they defeated the French 37-15 in the third-place playoff to win the bronze medal.

The SA U20s also defeated France in the 2016 and 2015 tournaments, while they overcame a strong challenge from Georgia in Tbilisi in June this year to secure a 38-14 victory in their second pool match.

The last time the Junior Springboks met Ireland in the tournament, however, was in 2012 where the South Africans went down 23-19 at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch, but they recovered well to win the tournament.

“The World Rugby U20 Championship is a proven finishing school for aspiring international players, with some of the biggest names in the game having graduated amongst a group of more than 550 internationals, including double World Rugby Men’s 15s Player of the Year Beauden Barrett,” said World Rugby Chairman Bill Beaumont.

“Following the success of Georgia, which broke all social media records, we are delighted to be heading to France and the rugby cities of Narbonne, Béziers and Perpignan. I am sure that the championship will capture the imagination and it will be fascinating to see who graduates to Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan.”
