  • Grey-kollege loots Badawi Legacy Trust

    Grey-kollege loots Badawi Legacy Trust

Deon Scheepers, Old Grey and Headmaster, said “We are deeply thankful to the sponsors of this programme and remain committed to building a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between Grey College, the donor and the Montpellier Rugby Club. Not only will such a relationship be beneficial to the learners of Grey College, but also because a strong relationship will mean that this programme could become any donor’s blueprint for the further development of talent in South Africa“

    * The programme is not exclusive and will hopefully serve as blueprint for other similar programmes and/or donors.

    * For the avoidance of doubt, the directors of the Badawi Trust, Jock Meiring Trust, and members of the Governing
body are acting in the sole interest of Grey College and will not receive any remuneration or other benefit as a result
    of this initiative.

On behalf of the Badawi Legacy Trust, the Jock Meiring Trust, and the Governing Body of Grey College:

    Parlez vous francais

It is said that a school is a building with tomorrow inside. As a modern society, it is our duty to provide our students with an environment within which they can create the best possible tomorrow for everyone. A tomorrow in which South Africans will succeed in the context of unprecedented levels of globalisation and technological advance.

Grey College has been providing such an environment to its students for decades. This includes maintaining a school identity which promotes inclusivity, diversity, equality, discipline, respect, hope, faith and charity. More recently, the school constructed world-class facilities where boys are tutored in science, a subject in which South Africa lacks skill. Grey College has also introduced French as a voluntary subject as of 2018. This new faculty is a subset of a new scholarship programme designed to reinforce the environment within which Grey College boys are shaping a better tomorrow:

The Badawi Legacy Scholarship Programme has committed to make contributions to Grey College in three areas over the next five years:

    1. The programme will fund the appointment, by Grey College, of a French Language teacher for a period of five years

    2. The Programme is expected to provide funding support to at least 50 scholarship holders which translates into partial funding support of over 200 student years. Scholarships will be awarded to students on an unconditional basis and without recourse or any other obligation during, or post- study at Grey College

    3. The donor of the programme has secured a commitment from Montpellier Rugby Club in France to make available, to Grey College, resources including a commitment to sharing coaching methods and exchange programmes for rugby coaches Badawi Scholarships will enable scholarship holders to attend Grey College and will be awarded, on a means tested basis, to individuals who do not have similar alternatives readily available to them. Scholarships holders will be individuals with demonstrated potential in leadership and/or academia and the sport of rugby.

The application process will be communicated in due course.

 It could be argued that these principles applied since the inception of Grey College in 1855 (reference, for example, the contribution made by Old Grey Bram Fischer)

 These numbers depend on (a) School Fees payable per scholarship holder, which i.a. depends on the boarding or non-boarding status of the scholarship holder (b) The level of scholarship awarded per scholarship holder (c) the year of intake and (d) Other variables.

 Scholarship holders are invited to, but won’t be required to take French as a subject

 For the avoidance of doubt: Grey college will not be “buying” talent: The programme will seek to identify talented individuals who do not have similar alternatives readily available to them. Applicants whose financial position does not impose any restriction on their attendance of Grey College or similar institutions will not be eligible for this scholarship.

  • Momentum Kallis Bursary Programme for talented, deserving young cricketers

Momentum Kallis Bursary Programme for talented, deserving young cricketers

JacquesKallisBursFinancial Services Company Momentum is proud to announce a joint venture with the Jacques Kallis Foundation to form the Momentum Kallis Bursary Programme (MKBP). This is a continuation of the Momentum 2 Excellence (M2E) Bursary Programme, which already has 16 children enrolled in quality high schools around the country.

The MKBP has taken the best of both programmes but will now allow for more children to access bursaries via the new programme.

The M2E bursary programme was established in 2015 where initially five young learners from Oudtshoorn, East London, Queenstown, Cape Town and George were selected. This has now grown to 16 children enrolled in quality high schools around the country.

The selection criterion includes a focus on cricket talent, academic merit, financial need and personal attributes of the candidate. . The amalgamation means that 10 scholars, currently on bursaries from the Jacque Kallis Foundation, will now be looked after by the new Momentum Kallis Bursary Programme, bringing the total to 26 learners.

The Momentum Kallis Bursary Programme is a marriage of minds between the Momentum 2 Excellence Bursary programme and the Jacque Kallis Foundation, as their objectives are aligned, in securing quality education for deserving youngsters.

“I am very excited about the merger of the two programs. We both have the same objective in that we want to give underprivileged children the opportunity to get a start in life by attending well established schools in the country. We focus on their sporting abilities, but even more importantly, their academics.

With the structure that the Momentum program brings to the party and our experience, I think we have created a strong and exciting team that will make a difference in people’s lives going forward. In the end, if everyone in SA did a little to improve other people’s lives, we would all live in a better place,” said Jacque Kallis. Kallis is known to take a hands-on approach so the children will have a chance to learn and be inspired by him.

This bursary programme combines the strengths of four organisations that play crucial roles in the learner’s success.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) takes ownership of the recruitment process by identifying talent from its various hubs around the country whilst Momentum provides financial support and possible internship opportunities for matriculants or further funding for tertiary education.

The non-profit organisation MAD Leadership Foundation focuses on leadership development through education with an aim to identify academically talented scholars, who do not have the financial resources and offer them support in the areas of education, leadership and life-skills development.

Jacques Kallis will be bringing his passion for the development of cricket and will be an active patron, bringing his network of partners to help with fundraisers for the programme, through initiatives such as the Golf Day that are hosted by the Jacques Kallis Foundation.

“Momentum is delighted to add Jacques Kallis as part of the existing partnership with Cricket South Africa and MAD Leadership Foundation to continue offering these talented young cricketers the opportunity of a holistic, full-investment bursary. With the Momentum Kallis Bursary Programme, we will be in the position to offer talented learners a bursary that will contribute to school fees, transport, textbooks, stationery, as well as essential support and development initiatives such as extra classes.

At the heart of the bursary programme is a structured and comprehensive leadership and mentorship programme to develop the full potential of these learners as South Africa’s future leaders,” said Momentum CSI Manager, Nkosinathi Mahlangu.

Mahlangu elaborates further by saying: “The partners in this programme share the vision that by investing in talent, supported by education and leadership development, we can nurture excellence and make a difference to future generations. CSA will select learners showing potential talent, Momentum will sponsor the funds necessary for the bursaries and MAD will oversee and implement the programme. Jacques Kallis will be the Patron of the programme and will get involved in motivating the learners being the role model that he is, as a cricketing icon, while playing an active role in raising funds for the programme”.

Application forms for the 2019 intakes will be announced in due course. Please visit Mad Leadership Foundation’s s website for more details and selection criteria www.madleadership.org or email NKosinathi Mahlangu, CSI Manager Momentum at emmanuel.mahlangu@momentum.co.za for the forms. Both boys and girls are welcome to apply. To reiterate, entry criteria remain high and are based on financial need, cricket talent, academic standing and the character of the candidate.

The next intake will be for the 2019 academic year.

  • Iqhawe Week continues to create opportunities

Iqhawe Week continues to create opportunities

IqhaweWeekLogoThe 2017 edition of one of the most exciting new events in South African schools rugby, the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week, will be hosted at the Bill Jardine Stadium in Johannesburg from 2 to 5 October.

The development rugby tournament, initiated by the SA Rugby Legends Association (SARLA), aims to bring together representative Under-15 development teams from 14 rugby unions in South Africa.

Talented young athletes, many of whom are from underprivileged areas, have a chance to showcase their abilities through this event, and could even have a shot at a bursary from traditional rugby-playing schools.

The Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week is part of SARLA’s broader mandate to use sport as a tool for social upliftment, with other initiatives in its rugby development programme being Vuka Rugby and the Legends Cup.

The tournament is endorsed by SA Rugby as an official Youth Week and is hosted in partnership with the City of Johannesburg.

SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux said the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week as been an important cog in SA Rugby’s transformation and development initiatives since 2013.

“The fact that 45 players have graduated from this tournament to the U16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week since 2015 shows the significant platform it creates for players to advance their rugby careers,” said Roux.

“Transformation is about creating opportunities for all South Africans and through this tournament players from non-traditional rugby schools and rural areas are able to showcase their skills on the provincial stage. I would like to thank SARLA for the fantastic work they are doing to give back to rugby, as well as Carfind.co.za and the City of Johannesburg for supporting this event.”

Previous years have seen tight matches, big wins and a thrilling week of excellent rugby, as Stefan Terblanche, CEO of SARLA comments: “Last year’s event unearthed some incredible raw talent, and those youngsters have gone onto achieve even further in their regions.”

Terblanche and the SARLA leadership have worked tirelessly to ensure that the Vuka Rugby programme structures implemented at various unions around the country will bear fruit, and it has.

Young players from all levels of society are beginning to access the same opportunities as those from the more established rugby schools and are seeing the same benefits from training and competing.

“This is a special year for rugby in South Africa, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Springboks winning the 2007 Rugby World Cup and the 25th anniversary of the unification of rugby in South Africa,” said Terblanche.

“SARLA believes that the values of rugby, such as sportsmanship, dedication and integrity, can help transform the lives of young South Africans. This is why we, as SA Rugby Legends, are proud to be a part of the transformation of the game and will continue to contribute to the development of rugby at all levels.”

Terblanche extended his gratitude to the City of Johannesburg for their support and assistance with this initiative and said: “There is no doubt that the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week is firmly on the map as one of the country’s definitive rugby development showcases, thanks to SA Rugby’s official acknowledgement of the tournament as one of their youth weeks.”

“Now in our second year of sponsoring the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week, we are proud of the association and the progress made within the tournament,” said Carfind.co.za Managing Director Mike de Charmoy.

“Furthermore, as a proudly South African company we are proud to be part of the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week where it’s not only about the one week of the tournament, but more about the year-long programme around the country that gets underprivileged youngsters onto the playing fields with opportunities to develop their skills and unlock their potential.

“Carfind.co.za through our sponsorship of the Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week are excited to know that we are helping create potential opportunities for the youth of South Africa, and for this we thank SARLA and SA Rugby for the opportunity and wish them everything of the best with their 2017 Carfind.co.za Iqhawe Week tournament.”

Stellenberg was in ‘n derby in die ander halfeindstryd gewikkel teen Durbanville.

Paarl Boys’ High to host 2018 Coca-Cola Craven Week

YouthWeeksThe 2018 edition of the U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week and Coca-Cola Academy Week will be hosted at Paarl Boys High from 8 to 14 July, in celebration of the school’s 150th anniversary, with both tournaments getting fresh makeover.

The U13 Coca-Cola Craven Week and U16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week, meanwhile, will be hosted at Hoërskool Diamantveld in Kimberley from 1 to 6 July, and the Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) Week at the Isak Steyl Stadium in Vanderbijlpark from 24-28 June.

In a fresh introduction to the U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week, the Blue Bulls, Golden Lions and Western Province will field invitational sides in addition to their regular Coca-Cola Craven Week teams, while Zimbabwe, Namibia, Eastern Province Country Districts, Griquas CD and Border CD will only play in the Coca-Cola Academy Week and no longer field U18 Craven Week teams.

The revised team make-up in the respective competitions will see the U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week feature 18 teams and the Coca-Cola Academy Week 28.

“It is fitting that the U18 Coca-Cola Craven Week and Coca-Cola Academy Week will be hosted at Paarl Boys’ High as they celebrate their 150-year anniversary,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“Boys’ High has a rich rugby history and is renowned as one of the top rugby schools in the country, with a number of Springboks being borne from its ranks, including Corné Krige, Gurthrö Steenkamp, Carel du Plessis and Mannetjies Roux.”

Of the competition makeover, Roux said: “Two of the main objectives of the SA Rugby Youth Weeks are to create a platform for the players to test their skills and develop as players against the best possible opponents, and the best way to achieve that is by ensuring that all the matches are competitive.

“We believe these changes will benefit the participating players and teams in both competitions, and contribute to a more exciting product for the spectators alike.”
