Roux remains humble as SA U20’s book semi-final spot

NewsGGianiLombardJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux remained humble on Thursday as his team romped to an 11-try 72-14 bonus-point victory against Argentina in their final pool match at the World Rugby U20 Championship at the Avchala Stadium in Tbilisi to book a semi-final berth.

The SA U20’s produced a solid all-round performance to outplay Argentina, with hooker Johan Grobbelaar and winger Gianni Lombard each crossing the tryline twice.

“We treated this match as a quarter-final and the players responded very well,” said Roux.

“All credit must go to them. I think they delivered a fantastic performance. But we have achieved nothing yet. We have already started with the planning for the next game, with the opposition depending on what happens between Australia and England.”

Asked if the victory gave the team confidence with the semi-final in mind, Roux said: “I think so. The players have worked hard. But this means nothing if we do not win the next match.”

Grobbelaar opened up the scoring with two tries in four minutes, first from a rolling maul and then a stolen lineout, to push the side 12-0 ahead in the opening 10 minutes.

Argentina struck back with a try from a pick-and-go minutes later, and this was followed by Junior Bok centre Wandisile Simelane receiving a yellow card for tripping a player.

This, however, did not affect the Junior Boks’ rhythm as winger Gianni Lombard received a smart pass from centre Damian Willemse to score the team’s third try, while back-to-back tries by Willemse and winger Yaw Penxe shortly before the break compliments of good handling skills and innovative play, saw the team inflate their score to 31 points.

Argentina were only able to add one try in the second quarter by winger and captain Tomas Malanos, who took advantage of an overlap out wide, which saw them trail 31-14 at the break.

“Los Pumitas” were dealt a blow in the opening seconds of the second half with Franco Molina being sin-binned, and the SA U20’s capitalised on this with No 8 Juarno Augustus crossing the tryline.

Roux’s team continued to run riot as Bosch added a penalty goal, while Lombard, Embrose Papier, Manie Libbok, and replacement backs Francois de Villiers and Jeanluc Cilliers added further tries in a rewarding second half to finish the match with an impressive 11 tries and a memorable 72-14 victory.

    Scorers:

Junior Springboks 72 (31) – Tries: Johan Grobbelaar (2) Gianni Lombard (2), Damian Willemse, Yaw Penxe, Juarno Augustus, Embrose Papier, Manie Libbok, Francois de Villiers, Jeanluc Cilliers. Conversions: Curwin Bosch (7). Penalty Goal: Bosch. Argentina 14 (14) – Tries: Felix Luna, Tomas Malanos. Conversions: Tomas Albornoz (2).

Dié beleid is intussen aangepas.

Roux maintains continuity for Argentina clash

NewsGJuniorBoksTeamJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux made three personnel changes to his team for their third and final pool match against Argentina at the World Rugby U20 Championship on Thursday, with Curwin Bosch, Ruben van Heerden and Hendre Stassen being drafted into the starting line-up.

Bosch replaces Manie Libbok at flyhalf, while Libbok switches to fullback in the place of Jeanluc Cilliers, who moves to the bench. Upfront, Van Heerden and Stassen will form a new lock pairing.

Van Heerden, who missed the clash against Georgia after taking a knock against France, replaces Reinhard Nothnagel, while Stassen takes over from Salmaan Moerat.

Flanker Muller Uys, who joined the team in Georgia on Sunday morning as an injury replacement for Nama Xaba, will start on the bench in place of Zain Davids, who is serving a two-match suspension.

“We looked at the opposition, how fresh the players are, and their availability, and we feel that this is the best team for the Argentina clash,” said Roux.

“We are fortunate that all the players can play at any time and they are ready and willing to produce the goods, so our focus was not necessarily on continuity, but rather on winning the match.”

Roux expected a challenging task against Argentina in what both teams will regard as a quarter-final, and said his team had to deliver a solid performance all around to book their place in the playoff stages. The top team in each of the three pools will advance to the semi-final, along with the next best placed team on the log standings.

“I think Argentina will play a fast-paced game, but they also have a good scrum, so we need to be up for that.” said Roux. “Our defence also has to be sharp, and we need to play in the right areas. The Georgians played a slow game and we couldn’t get out of our half.”

Junior Springbok team to face Argentina in the World Rugby U20 Championship:

15 – Manie Libbok (Vodacom Blue Bulls)
14 – Yaw Penxe (EP Kings)

School of Rugby Rankings – 5 June 2017

31392 VS SCHOOL OF RUGBY HEADER v1

St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown and Outeniqua of George are the biggest climbers on School of Rugby‘s lastest School Rankings brought to you by Virseker. St Andrew’s is the giant slayers of 2017 as they’ve beaten Selborne College (26-5) just a week after the team from East London defeated the mighty Grey College of Bloemfontein. Last week they defeated Grey High School (41-36) in a thrilling encounter. They moved into our Top 20 taking up place nr. 19.

The Kwaggas from Outeniqua had some difficult games early in the season with a few of their stalwarts out with injuries. The team however recorded victories over HTS Drostdy and Oakdale Landbou the last couple of weeks which helped their place on School of Rugby’s Rankings. The Kwaggas also ran riot against Langenhoven Gimnasium in Oudtshoorn (81-20) on the weekend.

Oakdale Landbou made our top team, Paarl Boys’ High, sweat for a 36-31 victory in Riversdal on Saturday. This was Boishaai’s 49th successive victory in South Africa. They will be aiming for their half-century this weekend against Bishops.

Monument strengthened their second position by beating Glenwood comfortably by 30-19 in Durban. Monnas will be tested again this weekend against EG Jansen in Boksburg. The Jansies doesn’t rank that high, but is a much better team than their 24th position. They are definitely a Top 15 side, but a bad patch due to injuries earlier in the season influenced their ranking points.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results. This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@schooolofrugby.co.za – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.

Monument keep upper hand over Glenwood

NewsG TinusCombrinckThe “Wit Bulle” of Monument (Monnas) in Krugersdorp recorded a convincing victory of 30-19 in their annual Premier Interschools against Glenwood in Durban on Saturday.

Monnas boasts an excellent record against Glenwood with only defeat against the Durban-side since they’ve been meeting annually on the rugby field in 2010. That defeat of 18-25 was way back in 2012.

Monument played the first half into a breeze, but still managed to take the narrowest of leads with the scoreboard reading 6-5 in their favour.

Glenwood’s winger Janus Hendrikz scored the opening try of the match in the third minute to give his side a 5-0 lead. Hendrikz gave Monnas’ defence trouble each time he got his hands on the ball.

It was the trusty boot of Monument’s flyhalf, Jonathan Viljoen, who gave his side a 6-5 lead at the break with two well-struck penalty goals. Viljoen’s tactical kicking as well as decision making was spot on during the game.

With the wind at their backs it only took Monnas 31 seconds in the second half to score their first try when lock Cristen van Niekerk chrashed over. The try was converted by Viljoen to take their lead to 13-5. He also slotted his third penalty goal shortly afterwards to stretch the lead to 16-5.

The livewire hooker, Morné Brandon, scored his side’s second try with Viljoen adding the extras. The flyhalf then produced the magic with a well-placed kick which was plucked out of the air by winger Brendan Buitendag to score. Viljoen converting to give his side a comfortable lead of 30-5 after 50 minutes of play.

Glenwood gave their effort some substance during the last 12 minutes of the match. In the 58th minute the replacement lock of Monnas, Humphries du Randt, was sin-binned. Another replacement this time on Glenwood’s side Rory Atwill scored shortly afterwards with the replacement flyhalf, Connor Allan converting to shrink Monnas’ lead to 12-30.

Outside centre, Conan le Fleur, scored the final try of the match which was duly converted by Allan. Le Fleur and his midfield partner, Rynardt Jonker, performed well throughout the match. Jonker is the son of former provincial referee, Marius Jonker. The final score being 30-19 in the favour of the visitors from Krugersdorp.

The “Wit Bulle” flanker Franco Schutte was named man-of-the-match. He and PJ Jacobs led the physical onslaught with some bone-crunching tackles.

    Scorers:

Monument 30 (6) – Tries: Cristen van Niekerk, Morné Brandon, Brendan Buitendag. Conversions: Jonathan Viljoen (3). Penalty: Viljoen (3). Glenwood 19 (5) – Tries: Janus Hendrikz, Rory Atwill, Conan le Fleur. Conversions: Connor Allan (2).

Hilton College on top against Kearsney college

NewsGDylanRichardsonHilton hosted Kearsney in ideal Midlands conditions for the return leg of the double header fixture. As in 2016, the result favoured the home team and Hilton won this encounter 17-8. Kearsney, however, dominated the opening 25 minutes but was unable to score any points, mainly due to poor handling, with many opportunities going astray with that infamous last pass.

Hilton deserves credit for their defensive efforts and good work at the breakdown, slowing down Kearsney’s possession and attack.

In the 27th minute Hilton earned a penalty from the breakdown which they kicked into the corner for a catch and drive lineout. Kearsney prevented the execution of the maul, but the hosts moved the ball to the backs, where the outside centre ran a good and strong line, to go through a Kearsney defender for an unconverted try.

Kearsney again played all the rugby in Hilton’s half and was rewarded with a penalty by Jacques Odendaal, to take the half time score at 5-3 in favour of the hosts.

The visitors started well in the second half and enjoyed a good opening 10 minutes. A spilled ball from a ruck got to the Hilton scrum half, who hoisted the ball which was knocked by a Kearsney defender. The hosts collected and scored a converted try to lead 12-3 after 13 minutes.

The third Hilton try came from a scrum in their own half, following a crooked Kearsney lineout throw. Hilton played blind and the number eight and scrum half ran 60m for an unconverted try to stretch the lead to 17-3.

Kearsney fought back and soon captain Dylan Richardson scored from a 5m scrum to narrow the score to 8-17.

With six minutes left and two scores required, Kearsney understandably ran the ball from everywhere in attempt to find more points. Handling errors, however, were the hallmark of their afternoon, preventing any further points.

Players that caught the eye were Dylan Richardson, Ross Taylor and substitute wing Robbie Koenig.
