  • Durbies looking for another big scalp as they face wounded Kwaggas

Durbies looking for another big scalp as they face wounded Kwaggas

    PHOTO: Frans Lombard/Actionpix

The table is set for a the toughest interschools between Hoërskool Durbanville and the visiting Hoërskool Outeniqua in years.

Durbies have been playing some superb rugby this year, and have already done away with Paarl Boys’ High (26-25) and Rondebosch Boys’ High (35-19), only narrowly losing out against Pretoria Boys’ High (31-35) and Noordheuwel (32-41) at this year’s North/South festival.

This weekend they play an Outeniqua side who have simply been a cut above the rest this season.

It is the Kwagga’s centenary year and they will be disappointed by the narrow 19-17 loss against Grey College last weekend in George.

A wounded Kwagga is dangerous though, and the visiting team will be looking to make another statement on Saturday with a return to winning ways.

The game kicks off at 13:20 in Durbanville and the home crowd will be out in full support of their team.

Kwagga wingers, JJ Daters and Keenan Jantjies have been phenomenal this year, but they face a Durbanville backline who are no slouches themselves.

Shaun Klein (flyhalf) and James Nero (centre) have stood out for the Durbies in the attack.

Between these two teams, we are sure to see some tries for the highlight reels on Saturday, but the game will be determined by the competition up front.

Outeniqua’s forwards played exceptionally to match Grey’s physicality last weekend, if they are able to bring the same intensity Durbanville may have some trouble.

It is also possible, of course, that such an epic encounter last weekend has depleted the travelling pack, leaving them vulnerable for Durbanville to pull off another famous victory.

There are some other big matches also being played in the Western Cape this weekend.

Stellenberg play host to Wynberg Boys’ High at 16:30 on Friday evening. The Stellenberg boys have been competing at the highest level this year, narrowly missing out with five points or less against Grey High School, Paarl Gimnasium and Garsfontein

Wynberg started their season with four big wins but just fell short against Paarl Gim last weekend, so they will be looking to get back to winning ways as well.

    The teams:

Durbanville: 15 Valrhino Olckers, 14 Naldo Klein, 13 Shadwill Engelbrecht, 12 James Nero, 11 Cayden Louw, 10 Shaun Klein, 9 Monray Daars, 8 Jayden Nell, 7 Evert Bouwer, 6 William Goldswaine, 5 Liam Baird, 4 Jacobus Botha, 3 Anru van Rhyn, 2 Devon Strydom, 1 Wian Koen.

Outeniqua: 15 JT Strydom, 14 JJ Daters, 13 Ashwin Damons, 12 Estiaan Cronje, 11 Keenan Jantjies, 10 Andrew Stopforth, 9 Jamil Pretorius, 8 Brendan Gouws, 7 Dewald Gerber, 6 Jefwinn Wesso, 5 Jayden Potgieter, 4 Michael Cronje, 3 Juan Kleynhans, 2 Nathan Smit, 1 Ruan Swart.

  • Queen’s College always a tough nut to crack at the Rec

Queen’s College always a tough nut to crack at the Rec

There’s a storm brewing in Eastern Cape as Selborne College and Queen’s College prepare for battle at Queen’s 165th Reunion.

Queen’s College have had a near perfect season thus far, taking six wins out of their seven total games.

They are surely still buzzing after last weekend’s victory over Stirling, where they took a memorable win of 75-14 over their opponents.

This was one of many as Queen’s defeated Kempton Park by 31-12 during the King Edward VII Easter Festival, they showed their determination this game, scoring their first try at under eight minutes into the first half by means of their eighth man, while making it look incredibly easy.

Selborne is not going to give up an easy win to Queen’s this Saturday, as they have played exceptional rugby this season with some great wins to their name. They too, defeated Stirling, earlier this year, with their final score reaching 29-0.

When Selborne took on Nico Malan of Humansdorp, it was some of the most captivating rugby to watch. Each play brought them closer to the victory and the team grew more united in each minute.

The outcome was 34-17 in Selborne’s favour.

Jordan Luck, hooker of Selborne, scored two tries within minutes of each other. Daniel Larkan (flyhalf), Amani Somana (scrumhalf) and James Bowles banded together to score a textbook try for Selborne.

This is the level of skill and determination they will bring on Saturday. This will be a phenomenal clash with an outcome to match.

Grey High School and Dale College are going to be an interesting match-up; with their records being pretty even for this season. Grey has three wins and a draw, Dale has four wins.

Dale did just defeat Hoërskool Grens (46-17), and they would surely love to turn this into a streak. Grey did take a 40-7 win over the Golden Lions Invitational XV recently, so they are ready to put up a fight.

There is no shortage of great games this weekend, Nico Malan is up against Despatch. Nico Malan currently has two back-to-back wins and are hunting for the hat trick.

Marlow Landbou is set to battle Hoërskool Grens.

The Grens first team recently won all three of their games during the Mossel Bay tour, with their final game against Hoërskool Douglas granting them a 22-12 win. Four players from Grens, namely Ruan Potgieter, Willem Kloppers, Jaco Muller and De Wet Nel, were also invited to be part of the Travel and Sports tour.

Cambridge will take on Graeme College this Saurday.

Cambridge took a close victory over Winterberg earlier in April, ending the game at 20-18. Graeme is playing great rugby this season, taking some notable wins, most recently their 57-5 victory over Port Rex.

Stirling will battle it out against Pearson, as Stirling will try to gain some solid momentum for the rest of their season, while Pearson recently made a notable triumph over Selborne.

Die Brandwag and Muir College will take the field against each other, after Muir College’s recent victory over Stirling, they should be keen for the game.

Die Brandwag took a near victory over Kempton Park in early April, and would surely love their next victory to have a bit more distance.

Hangklip and Winterberg Landbou will also be partaking in this weekends action, with both institutions hoping to earn champion status.

    The teams:

Queen’s College: 15 Mveli Mqulo, 14 Siya Konki, 16 Thina Fenako, 12 Lwanele Gaba, 11 Jameel Fleshman, 10 Itha Mbulana, 9 Jade Zindlu, 8 Axola Khatshwa (captain), 7 Uyanda Mlungwana, 6 Sisipho Mpaka, 5 Sambesiwe Timla, 4 Emihle Jaxa, 3 Abulele Bolotini, 2 Sbonga Mfeya, 1 Kyle Aylwin.

Selborne College: 15 Siya Sakhela, 14 Luke Hosking, 13 Cole Schonknecht, 12 Chad de Beyer, 11 Hayden McKay, 10 Daniel Larkan, 9 Amani Somana, 8 Dewan du Preez, 7 Grant Day (captain), 6 Gcina Puzi, 5 Josh Carr, 4 Zuko Poswa, 3 Nathi Nthuli, 2 Jordan Luck, 1 Sandi Msengana.

Eastern Cape Fixtures (home sides mentioned first):

Recap of the KZN High Schools Football Association first round

Chiltern Park Sports Club and Alex Sports ground hosted the first games of the KZN Schools Football Association second term League.

Likewise, the season looks exciting and very promising that there is still a lot to come.

Six goals scored on the first and eight goals on the second day making it a total of 14 goals scored so far in the first round for the new season.

The crazy part is that round one of the first fixtures is not even done yet as the next games will be taking place on the 26th of April both for Coastal and Inland games.

    Wednesday Results; 19/0424 (Coastal)

u19 Westville Boys’ High School played against Kloof High School in an evenly matched game that ended in a 2-all draw.

  • Queen’s College to host Selborne for Reunion Day

Queen’s College to host Selborne for Reunion Day

What has started as a thrilling hockey season in schools around South Africa will resume this weekend, with several school rivals taking to the turf in hopes of building momentum and cementing their stake early in the season.

Among other provinces, the Eastern Cape will be graced with appetizing fixtures throughout the weekend as traveling teams look to make their mark away from home while next-door neighbours will be left to battle it out for bragging rights.

The game of the weekend will arguably be between Queens College from Komani and East London’s beloved Selborne College in the Queens College Reunion Derby.

The two sides, rich in history, will play each other for the first time in 2023 after Selborne registered that emphatic 4-0 win in last year’s closing match. Post-COVID-19, there has been little to separate the two sides.

The hosts have had a rather impressive start to the season, surprising a few people in their matches leading up to this one.

On paper, both teams look good; however, the Queenians will feel they have a better chance, having started the season on a high note with a 3-1 win against an old foe, Dale College, at the Merrifield Hockey Festival.

They went on to beat Westering 6-1 before playing out two draws against Makanda powerhouses St. Andrews and Kingswood College, respectively.

The highlight for the Komani side, however, will be the two scalps claimed at the Founders Hockey Festival, where they outplayed Affies to win 1-0 before edging out Michaelhouse with the same score.

As for Selborne, they will also be backing themselves to register a win away from home after having a solid start to the season.

A season described as “solid team performances” by coach KJ Friend began at the Tony Godding Hockey Festival with three out of four wins against Parel Vallei (5-2), Voortrekker (5-0), and Woodridge (3-1).

The team then left for an overseas tour to the Netherlands, where they won all six matches with a relatively young squad while some first-team players stayed behind. Upon their return, the side played out a 1-1 draw against Pearson High last weekend, where they let the match slip in the dying seconds.

On the Queen’s side, you can look out for Bevaneo Maytham, Khanya Lusiki, and Luke Du Preez to make an impact, whereas Ben van der Merwe, Tre’ Gilbert, and James Carr were named as the dangerous players to watch out for by Selborne coach KJ Friend.

Kick-off between the two sides is at 12:30 on Saturday.

In other fixtures to look out for, Gqeberha’s Grey High will welcome Dale College to their shores. Grey lost 2-1 against Paul Roos last Friday and, after letting the match slip in the final quarter, will look to improve against a hungry Dale side.

Down in East London, Hudson Park, which has had a rocky start to the season, will be licking their lips when they host neighbors Port Rex THS at the Bucco Astroturf.

Cambridge High School will also host Graeme College from Makanda, while Stirling High welcomes Pearson in its annual derby.

    The teams:

Queen’s College: Luke du Preez, Brett Hoffman, David Sarpong, Khanya Lusiki, Asi Tybosch, Connor Oelofse, Keaneo Maytham, Ziya Bidi, Damian Miles, Lucan Hykes, Aiden van Jaarsveld, Lumuba Gqongqo, Rowan Miles, Calvin Blooms.

Selborne College: Charlie Caswell, Zenzo Xawuka, Daniel Gaylard, Shane Stagg, Ben van der Merwe (captain), Masibulela Siswana, Tre Gilbert, Murray Kemp, Riley Boardman, James Carr, Daniel Sirgel, Lunga Malusi, Jaques van der Merwe, Waeden Plaatjes.

  • Rosina Sedibane ease past Joburg City in GDL

Rosina Sedibane ease past Joburg City in GDL

Rosina Sedibane walked away with a 4-0 hammering win on Saturday against struggling Joburg City FC.

With no win in the new season of Gauteng Development League – Joburg city FC continue to struggle as they loose again at home.

They came to the game with three losses and two draws with two points while Rosina came to the game with two wins and three losses.

The game started on a high tempo as both teams were attacking from the first minute. The away team Rosina wasted no time as they take the lead in 11 minutes from a corner kick. Rosina extended the lead again in 22 minutes with a clinical strike from the striker.

Joburg City never sit back and defend but they tried to cause problems for Rosina goalkeeper as they test with with shots.

Just before half time Rosina made it 3-0 with a well taken goal from counter attack play.

In the second half the home team tried to get a goal but they were missing chances that they should hit the back of the net.  Rosina were trying to  protect their lead as they slow down the first half tempo.

Rosina Sedibane made it 4-0 in the 74 minute on another well taken goal on the right top corner. They went on to win the game 4-0 and move above on the table. The home team still looking for their fist win.

Their next game next weekend will away to Remember Elite. Rosina next game is at home against Randburg AFC.

  • Grey College defend themselves to 19-17 victory over Kwaggas

Grey College defend themselves to 19-17 victory over Kwaggas

    PHOTO: Francois Boshoff

Grey College remained steadfast in defence to hold on to the smallest of leading margins and claim a hard-fought victory over Outeniqua

Watch the game again on SuperSport Schools here.

The team from Bloemfontein met their most formidable challenge this season in George against an inspired Kwagga team who remained within arm’s length of the visitors to the very end, with Grey walking away as victors by 19-12.

The match lived up to its high expectations from the start, with both teams showcasing clinical, high-tempo rugby from the kickoff.

Grey struck first when their playmaker fullback, Vincent Wolhuter, broke the line and gave the ball to the dynamic flanker, Jean-Henri Smit, who could distribute it to the centre, Benito Goeda, who has been exceptional this year, to score.

Grey looked like they were about to start running away with it when they scored their second try shortly after. Liam van Wyk (hooker) managed to dot the ball down after a dominant rolling maul movement.

Outeniqua continued to enjoy ball possession though, and they never seemed to lose energy in attack as they kept battering at the Grey defensive line.

Their 2022 SA Schools A fullback, JT Strydom, began reducing the deficit with a well-struck penalty conversion with about 10 minutes left in the half.

He had another opportunity as Grey was reduced to 14 players with a yellow card five minutes later but his second attempt was unsuccessful.

The home team maintained the pressure and were rewarded with a penalty try at the very end of the first half, which also meant that Grey were reduced to 13 men for the beginning of the second.

The Kwaggas had their tails up and head boy, Ashwin Damons (centre),  collected a poorly fielded kick forward by his flyhalf, Andrew Stopforth, and slipped straight through the middle to gain the lead for the home team within a minute of the second half’s kickoff.

The advantage was short-lived though. The Bloemfontein boys regained the lead within five minutes when Pieter van der Merwe (centre) showed immense speed and broke through to allow Goeda to go over for his second try of the day.

Crucially, Ian van der Merwe (flyhalf) kept his cool and was able to add the conversion as these would be the final points scored in the match with 30 minutes still left on the clock.

Outeniqua maintained the pressure throughout the rest of the half, but Grey will take immense pride in the character shown as they were scrambling to prevent the Kwaggas from converting said pressure into points.

It was not the prettiest Grey rugby we have seen this year by a long shot, but the Grey boys continued shutting down the Outeniqua attack when it looked certain that the home team would get over the line.

Goeda, Wolhuter and Ian van der Merwe stood out for Grey, and though this was not the overbearing performance we have come to know, partly due to Outeniqua’s industrious attacking play, it was a trial by fire for the Grey team which they passed by gritting their teeth and doing the hard stuff.

It can be argued that coming away with a difficult win like this is even better than a 50-point romp.

Grey were defending in their danger zone with a yellow card, which turned into two yellow cards, for what seemed like an eternity, but captain, JJ Theron (no. 8), and his men stood strong in the face of an inspired Outeniqua attack.

For Outeniqua, it will, unfortunately, be a case of what could’ve been, as they missed two penalty kicks, and were unable to convert lengthy attacking play into points.

Regardless, the home team have shown that they deserve to be considered among the best, as they gave Grey, who will surely now be considered the top South African school team at the moment, a real run for their money.

Their replacement scrumhalf, Ellie Meyer, played phenomenally and stepped up to convert Damons’ try.

Their forwards also managed to match a Grey pack that has been demolishing their opposition this year up front.

Though they will be bitterly disappointed by the loss, their play on the day bodes extremely well for the rest of the season and it would be no surprise if this is their only loss of the season.

As for Grey, they seem to be unstoppable at the moment, but face another mammoth challenge in the form of Garsfontein in two weeks’ time at the Wildeklawer Festival

Garsfontein just beat Affies 45-38 to extend their unbeaten run this season. That match is set up to produce another huge battle between the best schoolboy rugby teams in the country.

    Scorers:

Grey College 19 (12) – Tries: Benito Goeda (2), Liam van Wyk. Conversions: Ian van der Merwe (2). Outeniqua 17 (10) – Tries: Aswin Damons, Penalty Try. Conversion: Ellie Meyer. Penalty: JT Strydom.

    Puntemakers:

Hoërskool Upington 43 – Drieë: Khayalenkosi Maganga (2), PA Karsten, Jaco Fourie. Doelskoppe: Ruwin Isaks (4). Strafdoele: Isaks (5). Diamantveld 31- Drieë: Lehan van der Westhuizen (2), Valentino Lenge, Kyle Taute, Simon Liversage. Doelskoppe: Marco Mathewson (3).

Wildeklawer 14 – Drieë: Gerero Ontong, Jona Tities. Doelskoppe: Tities (2). Douglas 12 – TBC

  • Buffalo City Soccer Leagues growing strength to strength

Buffalo City Soccer Leagues growing strength to strength

The city of East London is keeping soccer alive and well in a province predominant of rugby and other sporting code areas.

The Buffalo City High Schools Soccer League devised three separate league tiers under the local football association of Bunkers West Local Football Association. Bunkers West is a SAFA recognized Local Football Association and under their guidance and guideline high schools participating in these leagues are eligible for SAFA competitions.

The province is blessed with talent as much as other provinces when it comes to football, however there are significant constraints in getting that talent out there. During an interview with the league coordinators, Matthew Geach and Tevin Klaase they highlighted some of these factors:

Lack of media coverage, sponsorships deals and commitments from the relevant structures in supporting and nurturing the talent that the provinces posses results in lost opportunities for the young boys who hope to play the sport at a professional level.

The Buffalo City High Schools Soccer league has come from a long run and the team has been applauded for its growth over the years.

Currently the league is set up in three blocks (Block A, B and Block C) designed in a manner that each block has been allocated based on their geographical location to further assist schools that may have transport issues getting to travel the pupils to the games out of their reach.

The league coordinators also said that they are in the process of setting up a Girls High Soccer Schools league to further encourage the growth of soccer in the region.

The league is already under-way, Selborne College is leading the table with 9 points after successfully winning their three games.

Here are today’s fixtures are as follows- Block B:

    Round 6 – 19 April 2023
