Fountain Gate of Tanzania and Ben Sekou of Guinea walk away as the first inaugural championship of the CAF African Schools Football Championship at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont, South Africa.
For the final (boys and girls), it was all to play for; concentration levels were high from the first minute of the game as teams were competing for the bragging rights of becoming the first winners of the CAF African Schools Football Championship.
Girls Competition/Final
Fountain Gate School of Tanzania walks away from Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium as the first inaugural CAF African Schools Football Championship of the girl’s competition. Fountain Gate took to the finals against Ecole Omar IBN Khatab of Morocco after defeating CEG De Mfilou of Congo by 4 goals to nil.
Spectators were expecting an electrifying final between these two teams, and they were in for a treat as both teams had proven their dominance throughout the competition. Fountain Gate had the upper hand in the first few minutes of the game as they took an early lead in the 14th minute through Winfrida Gerald.
Fountain Gate missed an opportunity to extend the lead right after, through a missed opportunity by Mary Siyame and a fantastic save by Ahlam Boukhorb, the goalkeeper of Omar who has been fantastic throughout the finals.
Coming into the 2nd half of the match, Winifrida Gerald extended the lead for her team. 8 minutes before the match ended, Irene Chitanda scored the last goal of the match ensuring her team away with the trophy and with USD 300 000.
Runners-up, who also had a great tournament despite losing out on the finals, the young girls of Omar will walk away with their head help up high and with USD 200 000.
Boys Competition/Final
The last match of the day, for the CAF African Schools Football Championship between the home side Clapham High School and Ben Sekou from Guinea. Coming into the final, Clapham High School defeated Sainte Rita by a goal to nil to secure a spot in the final.
A very physical and highly contested first half between Clapham and Ben Sekou. Although ending the 1st half 0-0, Ben Sekou took control of the ball possession using sheer dominance of physicality to their advantage.
Goals in the final game came in the 2nd half as Ben Sekou took the first lead through Amara Keita jersey no.10 who has been one of the exciting players to watch in the finals.
Clapham equalized in the 31st minute through a beautiful goal by Kagiso Maloka who came in the 2nd half of the game. The match final ended in a 1 all draw taking the game into the penalties where Ben Sekou Sylla walked out victorious by scoring all five penalties while their opponent, Clapham missed only one of their penalties.
A very successful inaugural competition that saw 41 countries and 20 000 registered schools to play in the CAF African Schools Football Championship; it all came down to 14 schools from countries to compete in Durban, South Africa for the finals of the competition.
Ben Sekou and Fountain Gate proudly walk away as the first winners of the competition.
However, the beauty of this competition is that everyone walked as a winner as this speaks volume to the long term development and investment of football on the youth ranks and in schools of the African continent.

PRETORIA.

Grey High School, having taken on Paul Roos Gymnasium just the night before, faced South African College High School (SACS).
The fatigue is slightly evident in the Grey High team, with a notable less urgency to the ball than previously seen.
Grey High relying once more on their wide trough game to make the ball do the work – a clever game plan.
However, SACS quickly noticed the latter and shifted gears, effectively closing in on the ball and using outstanding pocket-picking tackling, causing many turnovers and as a result, many counter-attacks. Grey High loses the match with a full time score of 11-0.
Notable performance to Grey High’s goalkeeper, Adam Brown, who at the 05:20 minute mark of the 2nd chukka, denied SACS from scoring a 3-vs-goalie counter-attack, showing a lifted chin to the end of the game.
Results:
SACS 11 (Litha Kraai (5), Dean Carrick (2), Rowan Davis, Josh Opperman, Mike Royden-Turner, Nick Paxton); Grey High School 0.
There are some big clashes today around the country.

Grey High School and Paul Roos Gimnasium are set to clash in what promises to be a thrilling Premier Interschools encounter on the rugby pitch this weekend at the Markotter Stadium with the first XV’s kicking off at 13:55 pm.
Grey High may have already played in three festivals with six games under their belt, but their 50% victories in 2023 so far won’t be enough to intimidate Paul Roos, who has invested a lot of time and effort into their junior teams since 2019, and these results are starting to show.
Having a strong pipeline provides great depth and an understanding of the style of play that the school wants to implement across the board.
Grey High’s first game at the Outeniqua Centenary Festival was a hard-fought battle against new kids on the block, Stellenberg from Western Cape.
In a nail-biting finish, the men from Grey just prevailed, beating them 22-20. At the Graeme Festival, Grey faced off against Hudson Park and claimed a comfortable 27-7 victory.
Although they drew at home against Rondebosch, Grey came unstuck during the Easter Festival at St John’s College, losing two out of their three games to Boland Landbou and Pretoria Boys High before turning things around in their last match to beat a Golden Lions XV invitational side.
With only three games under their belt so far, Paul Roos may not have as much experience this season, but they have a rich history as one of the premier South African schools in rugby.
The words Paul Roos and rugby go hand-in-hand, as the great man was the creator of the famous Springbok emblem and name for the South African national team.
But this weekend, Grey High will need to improve their game if they hope to come out victorious against the formidable Paul Roos.
Paul Roos has produced the most South African players to represent their country on a rugby field, Juandre Kruger, Willie le Roux, Schalk Britz, Steven Kitshoff, Damian Willemse and Herschel Jantjies to name a few.
Grey High also boasts a proud rugby tradition and record, dating back to the 19th century. They have a number of players who represented the Springboks, including World Cup winning captain Siya Kolisi, JJ Engebrecht, and Curwin Bosch, who have all gone on to wear the Green and Gold.
But enough history, it’s time to talk about the action on the pitch! Grey High and Paul Roos are both renowned for their attacking prowess and hard-hitting defense, and supporters can expect to see some big tackles and lightning-fast line breaks.
Current players to watch from both sides include Paul Roos’ captain and full-back Declan Croy and inside center Philip Groenewald. From Grey High, players to keep an eye on include big lock Likona Sodlaka who is fresh off of two tries against an invitational Lions team at the recent St John’s College Easter Festival. Along with winger Thando Mgidlana who possess’ some pace and skill.
This will be a game to remember, as both teams leave it all on the field in pursuit of victory. Will Grey High prevail with their experience and tenacity, or will Paul Roos show their dominance as one of the best rugby schools in the country and ensure a victory on their home-turf?
The last ten matches have left Paul Roos sitting with a 60% win rate compared to Grey High’s 40% win rate.
The last time Grey High won a match was back in 2017. A famous one point win back in 2014 when they came from a 20 point deficit thanks to the boot of a young Curwin Bosch, might inspire this current crop of players with the thought that anything is possible?
King Edward VII School just hosted their Easter Festival and are wasting no time to take the field again battling Pretoria Boys’ High School this Saturday.
Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).
KES defeated Selborne College (20-0) and Hudson Park (55-12) at their Easter Festival but they show no signs of fatigue.
KES will once again be hosting a sporting spectacle this weekend, although this time around it will be a two-sided rivalry between them and Pretoria Boys’ High School.
Pretoria Boys’ High recently faced off against Grey High School and came out on top by 26-19.
The Noord/Suid tournament also granted Pretoria a victory. Their first team beat Durbanville 35-31, having Josh Naude named Man of the Match. Although they lost to Paul Roos Gimnasium, they improved the score of zero at half time to a respectable nineteen, ending the game 19-29.
With these institutions bringing their different approaches to the field, it should make for a great match-up. Although the first team game will definitely be the highlight for most fans, there will be much more rugby taking place.

Garsfontein: 15 Jason Hugo, 14 Ruan Enslin, 13 Dimitre Erasmus, 12 Heinrich Cloete, 11 Cassie Prinsloo, 10 Nicallen Gabrielsen, 9 Zian Cilliers, 8 Abri van der Westhuizen, 7 Divan Brits, 6 Zander Lourens, 5 James Schnetler, 4 Thinus Oosthuizen, 3 Leighton-Jon Cloete, 2 De Wet Lottering, 1 DA Swart.
Ander bepalings:
Vrydag – 17:10 – Douglas vs Wildeklawer. Saterdag – 14:30 – Duineveld t. Kalahari.

Naas Olivier se Rustenburg span speel vanjaar baie goeie rugby.
