  • The clash between Paul Roos and Grey College deserves more respect

There is no doubt that the country’s school system is the foundation for the success of South African rugby and the Springboks.

That point is evident in the annual interschools showdown between Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), of Stellenbosch, and Grey College, from Bloemfontein.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) or on DStv Channel 216.

The two schools have produced the most and second most Springboks since South Africa played its first Test in 1891. On Saturday, at the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch, they will once again face each other in an end of the season clash which will determine which team was South Africa’s premier schoolboy rugby side in 2024 season.

Nothing illustrates the magnitude of their traditional derby more than the fact that all the seated tickets for the match were sold out within minutes almost a month ago when they were released to the public. Paul Roos, then, decided to add another 2 500 seats by bringing in more stands for the day. The additional seating was also gobbled up within minutes of the tickets going on sale.

The good news is that walk-in tickets are still available for supporters who would like to attend and are content with finding a place around the field from which to watch the two heavyweights battle it out. “Even the secret stash of tickets we kept aside has been claimed,” said one administrator from Paul Roos.

The fact that this interschools clash has been affected by SA Rugby’s u18 programme since 2009 is a sad affair. Both schools have regularly contributed players to the Springboks and their annual clash, which often has so much at stake, such as the status of number one this year, deserves more respect from SA Rugby.

This year, three players from Grey College – AJ Meyer (lock), Ethan Adams and Pieter van der Merwe (both centres) will miss out on their final school game in front of a sold-out crowd.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be without their influential captain, Riley Norton (lock), as well as Reuben Kruger (flank) and Adeeb Boraine (scrumhalf).

All six players will represent South Africa’s u18-side against Ireland in Paarl on Friday.

France withdrew from the u18 International Series due to a tragic incident in which one of their players, Medhi Narjissi, was swept out to sea by a rip current at Diaz Beach in Cape Town. That caused the series to be shortened for the South Africa u18A side.

SA u18A played only one match against Georgia, which the local boys won 20-3, and that also featured a good number of players from Grey College and Paul Roos. Liam van Wyk (captain and hooker), Alzeadon Felix (flyhalf) and Philip McLaren (scrumhalf) were released back to the Bloemfontein powerhouse earlier this week, while Paul Roos was also strengthened by the return of Oliver Reid (prop) and Sam Badenhorst (centre).

The schools don’t seem to be able to move their annual clash to an earlier date. It has been almost 15 years since the national u18 programme started, but it appears that no one is interested enough in finding a solution to give the big interschools clash the respect it deserves.

Paul Roos is still unbeaten in 2024 and a victory over Grey would cement the PRG squad’s legacy in the annals of the school’s illustrious rugby history. Grey College has suffered only one defeat this season, which happened at the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid Tournament in Pretoria, where Jeppe High School for Boys scoring a stunning 22-19 upset victory.

A win for the home side would also give them their first unbeaten side since 1991. Interestingly, that’s the year that the annual interschools fixtures between the two giants started. That year, Paul Roos beat Grey College 20-3.

The PRG lineup in 1991 included two future Springboks – Justin Swart (fullback) and Cobus Visagie (tighthead prop) – while the Grey College ranks included future Boks, André-Henri “Ollie” le Roux (loosehead prop) and Werner Swanepoel (scrumhalf).

In die o.14-eindstryd sal Riebeeckrand and Wolmaransstad sake teen mekaar uitspook.

    Die spanne is:

Hoërskool Linden: 15 Zander Fourie, 14 Etienne Fouché, 13 Jeandré Müller, 12 Aidan Mans, 11 Ruben Little, 10 Francois Steyn, 9 Ruan Erasmus, 8 Ayden Davel, 7 Keatin Carlse, 6 Dylan Fourie, 5 Lincoln Engelbrecht, 4 Wouter Toerien, 3 Dylan Pieterse, 2 Zackie Crow, 1 Ryan Nel. Plaasvervangers: 16 CJ du Toit, 17 Jadon Texeira, 18 Dirk van den Berg, 19 Eric Beyl, 20 Jaydan Griessel, 21 Schuylar van den Berg, 22 Roelof Smit, 23 Sandile Gumede.

Riebeeckrand: 15 Junaid Fortuin, 14 Cayleb Hadebe, 13 Eshihle Sibisi, 12 Peet de Bruin, 11 Mika Seatle, 10 Zac Smit, 9 Freddy Parrott, 8 Luyanda Kubheka, 7 Kobus Malan, 6 Xander Wray, 5 Terry Billa, 4 Dylan Jacobs, 3 Hardus Carew, 2 Zander Viljoen, 1 Reinhard Eloff.

Douglas: 15 Zane Paulse, 14 Quintin Klein, 13 Janro Faber, 12 Gershwin Claassen, 11 Clinton Klein, 10 Raven Stellenberg, 9 Byron Slater, 8 Phillip de Jager, 7 Willem Oosthuizen, 6 NJ Eveleigh, 5 Adriaan Jooste, 4 Cobus Cilliers, 3 Shawn Wheeler, 2 Henning Myburgh, 1 Henco Human.

  • Wilgerivier nie sommer in vanjaar se Irawa-liga gestuit nie

Wilgerivier nie sommer in vanjaar se Irawa-liga gestuit nie

    FOTO: Marnus Photography

Curro Kathu: 15 Damian Mathys, 14 Xavior Leibrandt, 13 Luis Cassumba, 12 Stephan Ludik, 11 Carlo Cupido, 10 Leighton Hopshire, 9 Yibonge Mapi, 8 Euthan van Wyk, 7 Lyndzae Peacock, 6 Unathi Raborife, 5 De-Anzo Eilers, 4 Motheo Motsitsi, 3 Itumeleng Lekgetho, 2 Liam Pretorius, 1 Ruan Burger.

Ficksburg: 15 Oratilwe Shata, 14 Sameer Kraukam, 13 Boitumelo Hlalele, 12 Khotso Potloane, 11 Motlatsi Mohapi, 10 Evert Strydom, 9 Morné Swanepoel, 8 Karabo Morobe, 7 Thato Tsilo, 6 Lerato Makibi, 5 Mothandazo Khaoletsa, 4 Gert Bezuidenhout, 3 Lebo Lehohla (kaptein), 2 Mzilikazi Mokamatsili, 1 JJ Nell.

Hoër Landbouskool Hendrik Potgieter vs Hoërskool Wilgerivier op Jim Fouché se A-veld in Bloemfontein om 12:30:

Hendrik Potgieter: 15 Sterling Batties, 14 Denver Jacobs, 13 Waylon Strydom, 12 JW Mortlock (kaptein), 11 Boitshepe Nthibe, 10 Theang Monoyane, 9 Ensley van Wyk, 8 Unathi Ngeyakhe, 7 Hannes Jacobs, 6 Bin Laden Macholo, 5 Kallie Erasmus, 4 SW Erasmus, 3 Attie Melato, 2 Janco Roberts, 1 Pieter Jacobs.

Wilgerivier: 15 Marnus Swart, 14 Gerhardu Lourens, 13 Thlompo Motsapi, 12 Onkarabile Mokoena, 11 Pedri Graaff, 10 Wian Muller, 9 HG Muller, 8 Rohan de Beer, 7 Tshepo Nyause, 6 JD van den Berg, 5 Ewert Kleynhans, 4 Drihan Engelbrecht, 3 Tshwanelo Rametse, 2 Louis de Villiers, 1 Juan de Klerk.

  • Mnebelele to lead SA u18s against Ireland in Paarl

WELLINGTON, SOUTH AFRICA – JULY 13: Siphosethu Mnebelele of SA Schools scores a try during the U18 International Series, Warm Up match between SA Schools and SA Schools ‘A’ at Boland Stadium on July 13, 2023 in Wellington, South Africa. (Photo by Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images)

With heavy underfoot conditions expected in Paarl on Friday, the SA Under-18s are under no illusion that a tough challenge awaits them when they face Ireland in their first outing of the 2024 u18 International Rugby Series.

The match, which will take place at Paarl Gimnasium, kicks off at 15h30 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport Schools, as will the opening encounter of the day, between England and Georgia, which is scheduled to start at 13h30. Tickets are available here.

Ireland delivered an impressive performance on Monday when they outplayed England 42-28 in their opening match staged at Stellenberg High School in Cape Town.

The SA U18s are determined match the effort of the SA U18 ‘A’ side, who beat Georgia in their only clash of the series on Monday.

In naming the team that will be captained by hooker Sethu Mnebelele, SA U18 coach James Winstanley said his group prepared well for the series and are looking forward to meeting the challenge of a very good Irish team.

“We are privileged to have an outstanding coaching, medical and support staff in place and most importantly a phenomenal group of players that are excited to compete in the U18 International Series,” said Winstanley.

“Our goal as a staff is to create a gold standard experience for the players that they will remember for the rest of their lives. The overall aim of the U18 programme is to expose the players to the rigours of international rugby and prepare them for the pathway to the SA Rugby Academy and the Junior Springboks.”

Winstanley also praised the players’ efforts in the build-up to the much-anticipated series: “The SA Schools camp has provided us with the opportunity to align our structures and gain the momentum needed to produce Test match performances.”

The SA u18 mentor is confident that his team will be able to give good account of themselves in the annual series, starting on Friday against Ireland.

“The team selection reflects the importance of set pieces and go forward in order to win the gain line and breakdowns at international level,” he said.

“There is a strong probability of heavy playing conditions and so our kicking game and defence was also a factor in the decision-making process.”

Mnebelele also captained the SA Schools outfit against the SA Schools ‘A’ side last month in Krugersdorp, while AJ Meyer (lock) and Torren February (loose forward) have been drafted into the squad from the SA u18 ‘A’ team following injuries to James Schnetler and Kebotile Maake.

SA u18 team to face Ireland in Paarl:

15 Akha Boqwana, 14 Kuthadzo Rashivhaga, 13 Markus Muller, 12 Pieter van der Merwe, 11 Zekethelo Siyaya, 10 Yaqeen Ahmed, 9 Ellie Meyer, 8 Reuben Kruger, 7 Josh Mackenzie, 6 Alutha Wesi, 5 Riley Norton, 4 JD Hattingh, 3 Uli van der Merwe, 2 Sethu Mnebelele (captain), 1 Siba Booi. Replacements: 16 Mahle Sithole, 17 Phiwayinkosi Khubeka, 18 Aidan Botha, 19 AJ Meyer, 20 Josh Neil, 21 Adeeb Boraine, 22 Simphiwe Moyo, 23 Janco Purchase, 24 Torren February, 25 Ethan Adams, 26 Cheswill Jooste.

The winner of the Kynoch Cup will also receive ten tons of fertilizer from the main sponsor. All the rugby matches during the interschools will be weighted with even the result of the u14B match counting towards the big prize.

The result of golf and mountain biking will also count towards securing some fertilizer.

This clash between the first teams is also a Premier Interschools match.
