  • The Green Machine and Kearsney had an epic close encounter

The Green Machine and Kearsney had an epic close encounter

Kearsney College and Glenwood were the perfect contenders today and both schools put on an epic performance.

The Green Machine and Kearsney both put two penalties and a conversion of the board, however, Glenwood managed to earn two tries to Kearsney’s one. Such a close call and such a competitive game of rugby.

The final score was 18-13 in Glenwood’s favour.

St Albans succeeded in their fourth seasonal victory when they played against Clifton today. Clifton put up a good fight and managed to get a try, conversion and penalty.

This was unfortunately not enough to take the win today, as St Albans came ready to play and earned a 22-10 victory.

Matthew Pearce, of St Albans, scored two tries and Druan Visagie scored two conversions. Codi Peterson and Josh Verster scored one try and one penalty, respectively, for St Albans.

Michaelhouse are not slowing down after their 23-20 victory over Kearsney, but rather reigniting their winning streak. They defeated Durban High School 31-27 today in a tense battle. DHS is a strong contender and Michaelhouse still managed to come out on top; worth mentioning is the precise kicking game of Luke Davidson.

A hat-trick was not enough for Davidson, he succeeded in converting all four tries. On top of this, scored a penalty for Michaelhouse. Wandile Mlaba, Fortune Mpofu, Thabo Njapha and Aphiwe Shelembe each broke through the solid defense of DHS to score a try for Michaelhouse.

When the Northwood Knights and St Charles College took the field today, the first half foreshadowed an incredibly close game. By half-time it was 26-24 in Northwood’s favour and St Charles were playing top notch rugby to keep the Knights at bay.

In the second half, Northwood took control of the game and things went in a different direction. The Knights managed to increase their total score to 59 by full time. St Charles showed what strong contenders they can be, but ultimately Northwood left with a well-deserved 59-29 victory.

Hilton is having a near perfect season, delivering yet another win today against Pretoria Boys’ High School. This was Hiltons eighth win, and it was a big one.

The Hiltonians ended the game at 39-15. Pretoria did not hold back and did their best to defend their line, but Hilton’s squad is polished, focused and determined to take the win. The strength of a unified team shouldn’t be underestimated.

    Scorers:

Glenwood 18 – Tries: Keegan Goosen, MJ Schoeman. Conversion: Jaco Williams. Penalties: Williams (2). Kearsney College 13 – Try: Heinrich Fourie. Conversions: Chad Croshaw. Penalties: Croshaw (2).

St Alban’s College 22 – Tries: Matthew Pearce (2), Codi Peterson. Conversions: Druan Visagie (2). Penalty: Josh Verster. Clifton 10.

Michaelhouse 31 – Tries: Wandile Mlaba, Fortune Mpofu, Thabo Njapha, Aphiwe Shelembe. Conversions: Luke Davidson (4). Penalty: Luke Davidson. Durban High School 27.

St Charles College 29 – Tries: Rashid Isaacs, Ukhunyo Ntsangi, Jehan Adonis, Okuhle Peti, Petrus. Conversions: Ntsangi (2). Northwood 59.

  • Amathole schools announce strong squad for IPT tournament

Amathole schools announce strong squad for IPT tournament

Amathole schools u18 head coach Siyabonga Lusiba says the squad of 16 players selected to represent the Border region in this year’s IPT hockey festival will look to go the extra mile and win the tournament set to be held in the Free State.

The squad boasts nine Selborne College players, with Komani’s Queen’s College represented by three, while Merrifield College and Cambridge High boast two players each.

The team will travel to Bloemfontein from the 24th of June to the 30th, where they will face the toughest provincial teams in the country in hopes of improving from previous campaigns.

Speaking to SuperSport Schools after the team’s conclusion, Lusiba explained how smooth of a process it was to decide on the team.

“It wasn’t hard because some of the players picked themselves,” he said.

“We know how they play, and we’ve watched most of the games, and that made the process quite easy.”

“We normally have our hockey pre-season festival in East London, which is where we can watch all the schools and see them there; the only hard part was probably looking for two spots in the team.”

Despite going into the tournament dubbed as underdogs, Lusiba and his management team are hopeful that they have the right team this year that could upset a few sides and see them finish in the top four.

“As the management, we are looking to go there and win the tournament,” he added.

“However, it would be great if we finish in the top four. We didn’t do badly last year in terms of results, but we have a better team in terms of players this year, so we’re looking to win or at least finish within close range.”

Lusiba will be assisted by Michael Baiden, while Sipe Matafeni will be entrusted with managerial duties of the side.

    The team:

Tre’ Gilbert (Selborne College), Lunga Malusi (Selborne College), Waeden Plaatjes (Selborne College), Cade Kock (Selborne College), Masibulela Siswana (Selborne College), Daniel Sirgel (Selborne College), Charlie Cawell (Selborne College), Ben van der Merwe (Selborne College), James Carr (Selborne College), Lucan Hykes (Queens College), Calvin Bloom (Queens College), Luke Du Preez (Queens College), Trent Pillay (Merrifield College), Mpha Mboniswa (Merrifield College), Damian Alldred (Cambridge High School), Siphesihle Nodada (Cambridge High School).

When Stanford entered the third quarter with six goals, they were no match for Ben Vorster’s defense which prevented a goal in this round.

Ben Vorster entered the last quarter with just 28 goals to six, but they were determined to go all the way leading to their 41-9 victory against Stanford. The first team’s momentum could be seen on the other courts, the u15A team won their game 31-6 against Curro.

The u15 and u14 teams were hard to challenge, leaving their opponents with just one goal at the end of their matches.

PHS’s B teams travelled to Hoërskool Hans Strijdom to face their A teams. Good sportsmanship was visible throughout the courts. Hans Strijdom was adamant in keeping one victory to their courts, they defeated PHS’s second team with a score of 28-22.

However, PHS got enough bragging rights by winning the rest of their games. The u14B team secured an impressive 17-6 victory against Hans Strijdom.

Hoërskool Ben Viljoen’s first team delivered a successful 41-19 victory against Hoërskool Piet Potgieter. Ben Viljoen took control of the game from the first quarter ending on a 21-10 lead at the end of the first half. They entered the last quarter with enough momentum to increase the gap they enforced on Piet Potgieter.

Piet Potgieter could only add three goals in the last quarter, failing to turn around Ben Viljoen’s advantage in the game. Piet Potgieter lost the game 41-19 and Ben Viljoen’s, Rethabile Maleka walked away with the player of the match title.

Hoërskool Nelspruit had their first league match on Saturday against Hoërskool Secunda.

The first team match was a thrilling game where both teams showed their strengths on the court.

The first quarter was the perfect chance for Nelspruit to set base and finish the round with a 11-7 lead against Secunda.

However, Secunda was not willing to let Nelspruit advance any further and fought back in the second quarter. They managed to equalize the score, changing control, and finishing on a 19-18 lead against Nelspruit.

  • Ladysmith wins Umvoti & Othukela challenge for the first time since 2012

Ladysmith wins Umvoti & Othukela challenge for the first time since 2012

Ladysmith head coach Christo Pieterse believes winning the Spar KZN Umvoti & Othukela Challenge will inspire girls from the school to take up hockey and gain interest in the sport as the school looks to go from strength to strength regarding their hockey program.

The Durban side, who put in a solid performance at the tournament, won three of their round-robin matches, finishing on top with 17 points, and qualifying for the final.

In the final, they met last year’s champions, Domino Servite, in a brutal battle that ended with Ladysmith winning (2-1).

Speaking to SuperSport Schools after the momentous victory, head coach Christo Pieterse expressed how happy the team was with the win and how much of an impact a win like this will have on the school.

“We are really happy with the result of the Spar tournament after an absence of a few years and with COVID preventing us from taking part in hockey,” said Pieterse.

“With a result like this and the trophy we won; I think the interest in hockey will grow in the school.”

“Seeing that we’ve only got a limited number of girls playing the sport, and for us to be able to achieve a result like this, it will motivate most girls at the school to take up hockey.”

Despite the team producing some brilliant hockey, defending well, and taking their chances in front of the goal, special mention must go to Nosipho Madonsela and Kara Fourie, who were picked out as standout players for the team.

Pieterse’s side will carry the momentum into their remaining matches in the Northern Natal League this season, two of them being against Escourt High and Greytown.

  • Queen’s College further adds more sorrow to Dale’s season

Queen’s College further adds more sorrow to Dale’s season

Queen’s College added more daylight between them and arch-rivals Dale College when they defeated the King Willy side 2-0 in their 162nd reunion in King Williams Town on Friday night.

Entering the match, Queens were coming off a rest weekend after last playing against a competitive side at the reunion against Selborne College in late April.

However, that didn’t negatively impact the Komani side, as a number of their players participated in the Border trials held in East London a week ago.

Queens started the match like a house on fire, dominating proceedings and using their counterattack style of play. They created several chances in the first chukka, also getting three short corners, but couldn’t convert and make Dale pay.

The second chukka would see the Komani side open the deadlock with a goal from Lucan Hykes after a well-executed penalty corner found the stick of Hykes, who swept the ball into the back of the net.

That goal sparked the home side back to life as Dale managed to get two one-on-one opportunities with the keeper but failed to convert— an issue stated by assistant coach Andrew Senekal ahead of the game.

Those would be the only chances created by the home side, as a late goal by Queens forward Bevaneo Maytham from another penalty corner secured the win for the visitors, keeping their superb run in the 2023 season going.

As for Dale, they’ll go back to the drawing board in hopes of registering their first win of the season in the upcoming weeks.

In other matches in the Eastern Cape, Hudson Park defied all odds when they defeated Merrifield College (2-0) on the Bucco Astro.

In Gqeberha, Pearson High and Kingswood’s match was cancelled due to bad weather, much to the dismay of Pearson coach Dallan Phillips.

Phillips told SuperSport Schools that his team was ready to play in the rain and even asked the visitors if the match could be rescheduled to Saturday.

“We were really desperate to play the game, but they didn’t want to; they pulled out,” he said.

Sticking with Gqeberha, Grey High and St Andrews College played out to a two-all draw before Woodridge defeated York High (4-3) with Westering going down (3-1) to Victoria Park.

    Scorers:

Queen’s College 2 (Lucan Hykes, Bevaneo Maytham). Dale College 0.

Hudson Park 3 (Ntsika Phuza, Vizi Booysen, Helio Ruiters). Merrifield 1 (Trent Pillaya).

Grey High School 2 (Kian Cambier, Xander Elkington). St. Andrew’s College 2 (Roos Gordon, James Grundlingh).

Pearson High School vs. Kingswood College – Cancelled

    Other results:

York High 3, Woodridge 4; Victoria Park 3, Westering 1.

  • Stutterheim on fire in Buffalo City League

Stutterheim on fire in Buffalo City League

GQEBERHA – Stutterheim High School extended their win streak to seven games and solidified their spot at the top of the Buffalo City League table.

Leading up to the mid-week fixtures, Stutterheim High School had a one-point lead ahead of Selborne College at second on the log standings.

The three remaining spots in the top five were occupied by the Center of Excellence, Cathcart High School and Merrifield College respectively.

It is important to note that King Williamstown’s Dale College, placed sixth on the log standings prior to the mid-week fixtures, were five games behind top-placed Stutterheim but only trailed by nine points.

Dale College were unbeaten heading into the mid-week fixtures and when they were faced with Selborne College on Wednesday afternoon, they proved why they have been unbeaten in the tournament up to that point.

It ended in a goalless draw between Dale College and Selborne College which meant Selborne had closed the gap and were tied on points with tabvle-topping Stutterheim High School.

Another goalless draw was between George Randall High School and Baysville High. The result didn’t help either teams as they needed maximum points to move out of the last four spots on the log.

On the other hand, the boys from the Center of Excellence handed Hudson Park High a beating of note, putting four past the Hudson Park High goalkeeper while Hudson Park just couldn’t get one on the board.

On Thursday afternoon, to wrap up what has been an exciting mid-week fixture list, Stutterheim beat Cathcart High School two-nil and solidified their spot at the top of the log.

Stutterheim High School is now on 22 points, two points ahead Selborne College.
