  • Kimberley is green for another year as Northerns defeat Diamonds

Kimberley is green for another year as Northerns defeat Diamonds

    FOTO: Marnus Prinsloo

Hoërskool Noord-Kaap claim the bragging rights in Kimberley for the year, beating their neighbours, Diamantveld, 18-17 in a dramatic battle, decided by a last-second penalty conversion.

You can watch the game again on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

Kimi van den Horst, the Northerns’ centre opened the scoring on Pirates, slicing through the Diamonds’ defence and stating the home team’s intent within the first ten minutes.

The visitors, however, had their own agenda and two tries by Liam Ferris (fullback) and Simon Liversage (centre) gave them the lead,

Ferris showed immense pace to get to a kick forward by his scrumhalf, Dirk van Heerden, before anyone else.

Then Liversage received the ball on the blindside after a good, dominant scrum by his forwards and rounded off the try in the corner.

That said, the Northerns pack did extremely well to match the big Diamantveld boys at the set pieces. Moeketsi Lang came off the bench in the first half and did not give an inch to his opposite number, the big prop, Flip du Randt.

Northern Cape showed great character to claw one back before halftime, even after being reduced to 14 men with a yellow card.

None other than Junior Kettledas, the winger who has been so threatening with ball in hand all season, finished off a try in the corner after a period of tireless attack by his team, during which it seemed like every Noord-Kaap player carried the ball at least once.

After 20 minutes of trading blows in the second half, during which time neither team could get past their opponents, Noord-Kaap took the lead once more.

Their scrumhalf, Lwandle Maseko, was awake to an opportunity, seeing that the Diamantveld defence were a bit slow to organize themselves he took a quick tap, deep in his own half and spread the ball wide to their winger, Keante Pienaar, who left the Diamonds defenders grasping at air as he bolted away along the touchline to score.

It looked like the visitors had stolen it with only four minutes left on the clock, when Liversage made another excellent break and managed to get the ball out to his other centre, Valentino Lenge, who is no stranger to the scoresheet himself, to score the try that regained the lead.

With only about two minutes left to play after the conversion attempt, it looked like Diamantveld might have stolen an epic victory, but the home team were still not done.

Spurred on by the supporters, wave after wave of Noord-Kaap attack after the kickoff led to a penalty being awarded with only a minute left in the game.

Eldrigde Jack (flyhalf) showed absolutely world-class composure to step up and convert the long-range penalty in the dying moments of the big match, after not being able to convert any of the tries earlier.

He shook off any pressure he might be feeling and converted the winning penalty, securing a famous victory for his side.

Welkom Gimnasium continued their impressive run of form at home, comprehensively beating the visiting Hoërskool Trio by 44-17.

The Gimmies’ backline has been a thing of beauty this year, and they have been providing some of the most spectacular tries every weekend.

A team that is made for the highlight reels with their scintillating tries and extravagant celebrations, the boys from Welkom have outplayed many of their opponents thus far this season.

St. Anne’s Technical from Saaiplaas in Virginia managed their first win in their debut season, seeing away with Virginia High 42-0.

The team has shown great improvement since they first stepped onto the field at the Fichardtpark Nashua Sports Day early in March,

    The scorers:

Noord-Kaap 18 (10) – Tries: Keante Pienaar, Kimi van den Horst, Junior Kettledas. Penalty: Eldrige Jack. Diamantveld 17 (12) – Tries: Liam Ferris, Simon Liversage, Valentino Lenge. Conversion: Marco Matthewson.

  • JF on top in FNB Classic Clash againt Tralies

JF on top in FNB Classic Clash againt Tralies

NewsG JimFoucheJim Fouché ultimately managed a comfortable 38-17 victory over Sentraal in their FNB Classic Clash after their neighbours gave them a couple of scares early on.

The game is available to watch again on SuperSport SchoolsRegister now

The first half was a tightly contested affair, as the home team only managed to break through the Tralie defence once, when their big loosehead, Bernard Labuschagne, powered over for the opening try.

Sentraal were resolute in defence, even though JF enjoyed much of the possession early on and when their captain and centre, Hanco Smith, scored just before half-time, it looked as if the Tralies might have something up their sleeve for the big derby.

The home team regained control in the second half, scoring five more to pull away and secure the win.

CJ Raath, Jim Fouché’s impressive flanker, powered through the tacklers, stretched to score and began building a lead for the home team again.

Sentraal struck back again though, through none other than the returning AJ Senekal, their prop who had been a standout player for them before his injury a few weeks ago.

After that however, JF opened up the flood gates and Hanko Botha (flyhalf), Triston van der Walt (scrumhalf), Calvin Bolt (nr. 8) and of course, their captain and try-scoring machine, Stefan Venter (hooker), all managed to cross the line and take the game out of reach of the challengers.

Venter had a great game again, and Van der Walt was a menace around the rucks and was kicking well on the day.

Were it not for a lengthy stop in play as a couple of injuries were rightly attended to, the score line may have been a bit nastier, as the Sentraal boys seemed to have their wind knocked out of them by the JF onslaught in the second half.

Fichardtpark extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games this season in a thriller against Landboudal of Jacobsdal.

The Lanties were in it to the very end, with only two points separating them from the Fichie Lions when the final whistle blew.

The accuracy of Dailen Geldenhuys, the Fichardpark flyhalf, who expertly converted all three tries, made the difference in the end.

Luhan du Plessis (hooker) who replaced Jaco Janse van Rensburg in the starting lineup for this game played exceptionally and scored a brace for the team from Bloemfontein.

In Reddersburg, Sterling Batties, the centre, scored 16 points for Hendrik Potgieter in their 46-10 victory over Sand du Plessis.

Batties scored two tries and kicked three conversions to help his team in the main event of the day’s activities.

Brandfort got their revenge against Bloemfontein High, beating the visitors 61-12.

Last year, Bloemfontein HS beat Brandfort 24-21 for the first time ever, and the hosts were not about to allow a repeat of that incident.

For Bloem High, Duan Visagie (hooker) carried the ball strongly and managed their lineouts well and Caydon Ontong looked dangerous with the ball in hand and was solid in defence.

Brandforts big no. 8, Wehan Strydom, seemed unstoppable though and scored four tries.

JC Venter (lock) and Altus Coetzee (scrumhalf) also scored a brace each, taking the game out of reach of the visitors.

For the home team, it was the flyhalf, Henré Smith, who stood out, along with his big forwards, Strydom and Venter.

    The scorers:

Jim Fouché 38 (7) – Tries: Bernard Labuschagne, CJ Raath, Hanko Botha, Triston van der Walt, Stefan Venter, Calvin Bolt. Conversions: Van der Walt (4). Sentraal 17 (5) – Tries: Hanco Smith, AJ Senekal, Damian van Zyl. Conversion: Reece van Rooyen.

Fichardtpark 21 – Tries: Luhan du Plesis (2), Janco Mollentze. Conversions: Dailen Geldenhuys (3). Lanboudal 19 – Tries: Barry Pretorius, Vuyani Moore, Marius Etzebeth. Conversions: Moore (2).

St Andrews 10 – Tries: Imani Kioko, Koena Ntsamai. Cornwall Hill College 44.

Brandfort 61 (35) – Tries: Wehan Strydom (4), JC Venter (2), Altus Coetzee (2), Cor Louwrens. Doelskoppe: Henre Smith (8). Hoërskool Bloemfontein 12 (7) – Tries: Kenslyn Collins, Caydon Ontong. Conversion: Waylon Cedras.

Hendrik Potgieter 46 – Drieë: Sterling Batties (2), Denver Jacobs (2), Attie Melato, Jandré van Niekerk, JW Mortlock, Cedric Booysen. Doelskoppe: Batties (3) Sand du Plessis 10 – Tries: Tiaan Opperman, Nelson Makabane.

  • Bishops bag first victory over Wynberg since 2019

Bishops bag first victory over Wynberg since 2019

Revenge was sweet as Diocesan College handed their long-time rivals, Wynberg Boys’ High, a 14-10 defeat in their own backyard on Saturday.

Wynberg have had the upper hand in this fixture for the last few years but the Bishops boys got one back for the first time since 2019.

You could sense the tension on the field and between the supporters, as the crowds traded chants while the players traded blows in a game that was loud, physical and contested till the end, a Southern Suburbs derby at its finest.

Wynberg opened the books with a penalty by their stoic flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, on the 15-minute mark.

His opposite number, Shaywan Blankenberg, took a big knock shortly after, despite being down for some time, after the medical staff had cleared him to continue he did well to recover and power on, continuing to play a central role for his team.

Bishops scored the first try when fullback, Gilermo Mentoe, wriggled through the smallest of gaps and outpaced everyone to take the lead for the visitors with eight minutes left in the first half.

To their credit, Wynberg never dropped their heads and kept asking questions of the Bishops defence, who remained resolute until the final minute in the half, when Amier Adams (centre) was rewarded after several phases of play.

The hosts went into the break up by 10-7.

The second half brought more of the same, with every powerful carry being met by equally impressive hits in defence.

Bishops showed that they can also build phases, and after their forward pack had softened the defence their industrious scrumhalf, Kashief Joseph saw an opportunity to dart around the ruck and score the only try of the second half.

Despite being a low-scoring game it was packed with action and exciting to the very end.

Up the road, Rondebosch Boys’ High also handed a home defeat to SACS (22-7).

Rondebosch controlled the game throughout, with their forward pack running the show.

Collin Paul Kemp (flanker), Carl Geddie (lock) and Justin Amos (prop) scored their three tries, highlighting how involved the big boys were in the attack.

Hoërskool Durbanville scored 77 unanswered points in another victory for the travelling teams this weekend when they visited Parel Vallei in Somerset West.

The Durbies backline put in the performance that they have been threatening to all season, scoring 11 tries, with Monray Daars  (scrumhalf) converting nine of them and Shaun Klein (flyhalf) kicking over the other two as well.

Worcester Gimnasium had joy at home though as they beat the visiting Bellville High School 30-19.

This comes shortly after they also came out on top in the clash against Worcester Secondary (29-19) on Wednesday.

Gimmies have been punching above their weight class all season and are an exciting team to keep an eye on for the future.

    Scorers:

Diocesan College 14 (7) – Tries: Gilermo Mentoe, Kashief Joseph. Conversions: Shaywan Blankenberg. Wynberg Boys’ High 10 (10) – Try: Amier Adams. Conversion: Yaqeen Ahmed. Penalty: Ahmed.

  • Duineveld maak skoonskip teen Uppies in Classic Clash

Duineveld maak skoonskip teen Uppies in Classic Clash

Saints march to prestigious Aitken Cup title

There was drama and a whole lot of suspense in the final of this year’s Aitken Cup.

St Stithians College dethroned Jeppe High School for Boys as champions of this prestigious and historic hockey tournament after it went to a shoot-out. The scores was locked at 2-all at full-time.

It was only the second time in St Stithians College’s history that they managed be crowned champions of the competition. Their first title came back in the 1980’s.

This defeat was Jeppe’s first of the season.

Jeppe’s captain, Jaydon Brooker opened the score board in the tenth minute, scoring from a penalty corner, putting his side in the lead and bolstering confidence in the team in this crucial final. Brooker put another one by the Saints in the 20th minute, this time, from a penalty shot.

However, the Saints were not discouraged as they replied with a half-time score of 2-1 to Jeppe – Connor Sneddon scoring for the Saints in the 26th minute. The comeback was now right-on-schedule as captain Taine Tanner-Ellis saved his team by scoring from a penalty corner in the 44th minute.

Queen’s College earns a royal victory over Dale College

NewsG DaleCollegeQueen’s College and Dale College were playing aggressive and competitive rugby this weekend, both utilizing pace and power every minute of the game.

After much back and forth, Queen’s took a 21-12 victory over Dale.

Onke Ntontela, of Queens, broke the ice and went full speed ahead to score the first try of the game.

Dale retaliated by means of Lindokuhle Xozwa, earning their first try and bringing the schools to a tie.

Soon after, Mveli Mqulo succeeded in kicking a penalty for Queen’s and brought the game to 8-5.

The lead was soon handed over as Liyabona Matyana of Dale scored another try, which was converted by Phikolomzi Mtyalela, bringing the half time result to 12-8 in Dale’s favour. The second half went in Queen’s direction.

They began to take the lead when they had a successful lineout, only metres from Dale’s try line, and Emihle Jaxa quickly broke through the defence to earn another try for Queen’s.

In an unexpected moment, Queen’s revealed that they had a card up their sleeve, Turshaan Hare kicked a drop goal and succeeded in putting another three points on the board. Queens finished off strong with Siya Konki landing a try, further securing them the win and ending off a great game of rugby.

Grey High School and St Andrew’s College were not only battling each other, but the weather as well. Even with the terrible conditions, both schools fought as hard as they could.

Kaiden Titus, of Grey High School, scored a try in the first half, which he converted, bringing the half time score to 7-0 to grey. In the second half, Chad Human and Daniel de Lange each managed to score a try for Grey High School, the latter of which was converted by Kaiden Titus.

The game ended at 19-0 to Grey High School, a well-earned victory, and due to the conditions, will likely be a memorable game for all involved.

Kingswood College and Pearson College also played through a massive down pour; this weekend turned rugby into an aquatic sport. Pearson did their best to hold the competition off, however, Kingswood seized the opportunities that were available and took a 18-0 win over Pearson.

Selborne College brought their A-game and defeated Port Rex 45-0 on Saturday. This adds to their list of big wins this season, proving what top tier rugby they can produce.

Marlow Landbou defeated Nico Malan 25-15. This is Marlow’s fourth consecutive win; they took a massive 72-12 victory over Landboudal at the end of April, and they seem to be on an upward trajectory for the rest of the season.
