  • Player Of The Week

Player of the Week – Herman Share
    17.07.2011
Diocesan College’s (Bishops) Herman Share represented Griqualand West Country Districts at the Coca-Cola Craven Week in Kimberley last year and hopes to attend this year’s edition of the most prestigious schoolboy tournament in the world as part of the Western Province squad.
Share plays flyhalf and inside centre for Bishops. Western Province’s first choice flyhalf for the Craven Week tournament in Port Elizabeth will Paarl Gimnasium’s Handré Pollard. He was also in action for them in Kimberley last year. “On a personal level I want to make the Western Province’s side for the Craven Week or Academy Week and I want to move back to flyhalf. I just want to keep building my skill level and keep growing as a player. As a team want to make it into the top 20 schools in the country,” said Share about his goals for 2012.

Share’s highlight of his career thus far is without a doubt representing Griqualand West Country Districts at the Coca-Cola Craven Week. Share also represented the province at the Grant Khomo Week in 2010.
How did it come that a player from Upington gets to attend one of the most prestigious private schools in South Africa?  “Bishops made a call to my mother and I got interviewed but it was difficult to make the move because I was playing two years for first team of Upington High. I feel that I’ve adapted quickly and I’m enjoying the type of rugby we are playing here,” said the talented player about his move to Cape Town.
Share says he enjoys the open rugby that Bishops are well-known for. “It’s the same as the type of rugby Australia plays and I like this type of rugby.” The flyhalf is also a talented sprinter so the defence can never afford to not keep an eye on him. His father, Leon Share was also a talented sprinter making a name for him in the 400m.
“I’m not sure yet, as I am only in grade 11 but I would like to continue with rugby after school in more professional way hopefully for the Cheetahs or Western Province,” said Share about his future plans. His heroes are Francois Hougaard and Bryan Habana.

  • School Of The Week

    Staatspresident Swart High
    11.09.2011

Staatspresident Swart High’s first team is the small schools champion of the central region. The team is captained by their flyhalf, Jan Frik Ludeke, whom also led the Free State Kiewiete at the VKB Reitzweek in Reitz. The team is coached by the well-known and experienced, Pieter Swanepoel, who himself coached quite a few Cravenweek teams before.

The team is unbeaten since 2006 in 40 matches. This team of Staatspresident Swart High will be remembered as the best from Brandfort the past ten years. Fourteen of the players represented the Free State Kiewiete at the VKB Reitzweek.

    The team is:

Ruan Venter is an attacking fullback who adds extra striking power to Brandfort’s already potent backline. He is also a excellent defender. He played for the Free State Kiewiete and was voted best fullback of the week in Reitz.

Shaun Prins is very fast, an aggressive defender and has a very good side step on him. He represented the Free State Kiewiete for the past three years. He deserves to play rugby at a higher level.

Johnny Barnard is an excellent distributer of the ball and as a centre has a good eye for a gap. He also represented the Kiewiete and was voted the best player in his position at the week.

Drikus Kotze have impressed with his solid defence in the midfield. He is also dangerous with the ball in hand. He represented the Kiewiete twice and was voted as the best inside centre at the VKB Reitzweek of 2007.

Kabous Alberts is a player who loves to score tries. He has plenty of gas and also played for the Kieiwiete.

Jan-Frik Ludeke played for Staatspresident Swart High’s first team and the Free State Kiewiete the last four year’s. An excellent attacking flyhalf whom can also hold his own on defence. One of the best flyhalf’s in the Free State.

FJ Marx is a player whose size might count against him, but all of his 60 kg is pure heart. He is fast of the mark and he puts great pressure on the opponents due to his speed. He represented the Free State Kiewiete the last two years and was voted best backline players of the 2007 VKB Reitzweek.

Heinrich Viljoen is an eightman who their can be kept an eye on for the future. He has great feeling for the game and links well between the backs and forwards. Also an asset to his team’s lineout options and breakdowns. Represented the Kiewiete and Free State u/16.

Rossouw van Staden is a ball poacher at the breakdown. He adds value to the team through his allround ability. He played flyhalf in the team’s last two matches of the 2007 season. One of the team’s representatives at the VKB Reitzweek.

Johan Slabbert is a hard working flanker. He is crucial in the team’s second phase ball and isn’t afraid to do the hard work. He also represented the Kiewiete.

Andrew Bester is one of the most talented locks in the Free State. Almost always catches the eye with his work in the lineouts and aggression in the loose. He is also a good ball carrier and has the speed of a loose forward.

Hanno van Straaten adds to the second row with his jumping, speed and ball handling skills. Like Bester he acts as a extra loose forward and with Bester he forms a formidable lock combination. He represented the Kiewiete the last two years.

Jorge and Paulie Andrade is the terrible twins packing at prop for Brandfort. They are good scrum workers. Both represented Free State u/16 and the Kiewiete.

Vincent Adendorf growed a lot as a hooker over the past year.

Divan Swanepoel is the most versatile player in the backline. He is fleet footed and has great hands.

Jaco Oosthuizen is the most versatile forward in the squad. He can easily slot into prop, lock or flank if needed.

  • Junior Springbok squad named for Summer Series in Italy

Junior Springbok squad named for Summer Series in Italy

NewsGImadKhanThe Junior Springboks squad for the Under-20 Six Nations Summer Series in Italy was announced on Tuesday, with six players who have Vodacom United Rugby Championship experience named amongst the group of 30 players.

The Junior Springboks will return to international action as part of an exciting Under-20 Summer Series, competing against the Six Nations’ U20 sides and Georgia in the tournament that will be staged in Italy from 24 June to 12 July.

Vodacom Bulls outside back Canan Moodie, his franchise team-mate Reinhardt Ludwig (lock), DHL Stormers’ Sacha Mngomezulu (utility back) and Connor Evans (lock), as well as the Emirates Lions duo of scrumhalf Nico Steyn and loose forward Ruan Venter all have gained some valuable Vodacom URC experience in the last few months.

These six players, as well as several others, have also featured for their provincial unions in the Carling Currie Cup, while Mngomezulu, Ludwig, Moodie, Steyn, James, Siya Ningiza (loose forward) all played for the Junior Springboks in last year’s successful U20 International Series in South Africa.

Cell C Sharks scrumhalf Bradley Davids, who also played for the SA U20s in 2021, was not considered for selection due to injury.

Junior Springbok coach Bafana Nhleko said he was pleased with the composition of the squad. He had been working with a 36-player SA Academy squad since Easter at their base in Stellenbosch, before trimming the group to the 30 players who will now don the Junior Springbok jersey.

“I believe we have a well-balanced and competitive squad,” said Nhleko.

“We are grateful for the domestic Under-20 competition earlier this year that gave us an opportunity to see the players and select the Academy group. We have a few guys who have gained valuable experience in the senior ranks, as well as a number of returnees from last year’s programme.

“Putting in the hard work on the training field is one thing, but actually playing in real matches, especially against experienced senior players, provides even better preparation.

“It was good in terms of seeing how we handle pressure situations and execute our plans against highly organised teams, hence the training matches against the likes of the DHL Stormers, DHL WP, Windhoek Draught Griquas, and Toyota Cheetahs, to test the players in proper match conditions.

“Apart from working with the players in what was a very talented Academy squad, we wanted to give the players an opportunity to see how they handle the quality, intensity and physicality of playing against a number of Carling Currie Cup teams, which is a step up.

“The Six Nations teams have the benefit of regular international competition between themselves, so other than our intensive high performance programme, we had to find a way of offering quality game-time to our group.”

A final training exercise against Maties in Stellenbosch is planned for Thursday, and the squad will remain at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport until their departure to Italy in two weeks’ time.

The Junior Boks will open their Summer Series commitments against England on Friday, 24 June, and that will be followed by their second match on Wednesday, 29 June against Ireland.

The South Africans will complete their pool fixtures on Tuesday, 5 July against France before playing a final cross-pool fixture one week later, on Tuesday, 12 July, with their opponent to be determined according to the final standings.

Junior Springbok squad for the U20 Six Nations Summer Series in Italy are:

Props: Lamla Nunu (DHL WP), Corné Lavagna (Vodacom Bulls), Juann Else (Vodacom Bulls), Corné Weilbach (DHL WP), Sebastian Lombard (Vodacom Bulls), Sivu Mabece (Vodacom Bulls).

Hookers: Lukhanyo Vokozela (DHL WP), Tiaan Lange (Vodacom Bulls).

Locks: Reinhardt Ludwig (Vodacom Bulls), Corné Rahl (Cell C Sharks), Connor Evans (DHL WP), Merwe Olivier (Vodacom Bulls).

Loose forwards: Ruan Venter (Sigma Lions), Cameron Hanekom (Vodacom Bulls), Siya Ningiza (Cell C Sharks), Gcino Mdletshe (Vodacom Bulls), Paul de Villiers (DHL WP), Louw Nel (DHL WP).

Scrumhalves: Nico Steyn (Sigma Lions), Neil le Roux (Vodacom Bulls), Imad Khan (DHL WP).

Flyhalves: Sacha Mngomezulu (DHL WP), Compion von Ludwig (Vodacom Bulls).

Centres: Carlton Banies (Vodacom Bulls), Suleiman Hartzenberg (DHL WP), Ethan James (DHL WP).

Outside backs: Donovan Don (Griffons), Katlego Letebele (Vodacom Bulls), Duran Koevort (DHL WP), Canan Moodie (Vodacom Bulls).

  • Good day for the Paarl schools as they secure victories over the Southern Suburbs opponents

Good day for the Paarl schools as they secure victories over the Southern Suburbs opponents

NewsG Boishaai RugbyLuca Bakkes was in devastating form for Paarl Gimnasium as they smashed SACS by 66-13 in their annual clash in Western Province’s Premier Division. Bakkes crossed the try-line four times to help his side to a comfortable victory.

It was his return match after sitting out for a couple of weeks due to injury. Dean Crouse (flank) and centre Janeil Losper also produced some excellent performances for the team of Paarl.

Paarl Boys’ High managed to defeat Wynberg Boys’ High by 42-24 in their encounter. Boishaai led 14-10 at the break before shifting gear in the second half. Ther flyhalf, Thurlon Williams, once again boasted a 100% kicking record from the tee converting all six of his side’s tries.

Boland Landbou managed a little upset as they came out on top by 14-7 against Bishops at Piley Rees.

Three weeks ago the team from Bishops was the only Top 20 school team left in the country with an unbeaten record. Since then the side has suffered three successive defeats against Wynberg Boys’ High (14-20) and Paarl Boys’ High (7-29). Bishops’ last victory was against SACS (34-0) when their fans were accused of throwing coins at the players from the opposing side which was seen as elitist behaviour by the prestigious private school.

Bishops played against Boland Landbou without their talisman and inside centre, Bruce Sherwood, who is still injured. The Western Province selectors are giving both him and Paul Roos’ outside centre, Jurenzo Julius, the opportunity to recover from their injuries before naming their final squad for the Craven Week.

This year’s Craven Week is hosted by Rondebosch Boys’ High in Cape Town from 3 to 9 July. It will be the first time since 1967 that the Mother City will host this prestigious schools’ rugby festival.

Rondebosch Boys’ High managed to defeat Paul Roos Gimnasium for the first time since 2003 on their home turf in Cape Town. Rondebosch walked from the pitch victorious by 24 to 12. The visitors from Stellenbosch lead by 12-7 at the break, but could nog manage to add any extra points in the second half.

  • Jansies behou onoorwonne status met sege oor Helpies

Jansies behou onoorwonne status met sege oor Helpies

NewsG Noordheuwel rugbyDr.
