Results – Kearsney College Easter Festial 2022

NewsG Leonard Booysen MarlowThe 13th Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival kicked off in beautiful, warm sunshine following a week of KwaZulu-Natal being battered by heavy rains.

The Stott looked magnificent and in good condition, ready to welcome back players and spectators after seeing little action for two years during the Covid pandemic.

Play opened with a minute’s silence for the two Dale College 1st XV players, Liyabona Teyise and Lisakhanya Lwana, who tragically died recently. Dale has participated in several Kearsney festivals, including the inaugural one in 2008.

As has become tradition, hosts Kearsney opened their festival, this time playing newcomers Hoër Landbouskool Marlow from Cradock in the Eastern Cape.

The first half was evenly contested with the Marlow forwards giving their team a slight advantage. The Kearsney back line, with centres Aya Mngaza and Siso France, both full of running, were able to make a few breaks.

The first by Mngaza ended with a tackle near the try-line and from the ruck hooker Devahn van der Walt dived over.  With just a minute from half-time, France made a good break, feeding fullback Nhlakanipho Ngubane who had the pace to get over the corner.

Both conversions were missed for Kearsney to lead 10-0 at the break.

After 15 minutes of the second half where play had moved up and down the field, a concerted effort by the Marlow forwards ended with eighthman Burrie van Heerden diving over.  The conversion by centre Aiden de Villiers was successful.

Kearsney got back into the Marlow half, but a handling mistake was pounced on by left wing Dempers Meyer.  He made 30m, passing inside to centre Leonard Booysen who had the pace to outstrip the cover defence and go over under the posts.  De Villiers converted for the visitors to go into a 14-10 lead with 12 minutes remaining.

As the game progressed, so Kearsney came under increased pressure with the Marlow backline imposing themselves. The game ended with no further score but with Kearsney doing more defending.

    Scorers:

Marlow Landbou 14 (0) – Tries: Burrie van Heerden, Leonard Booysen. Conversions: Aiden de Villiers (2). Kearsney College 10 (10) – Tries: Devahn van der Walt, Nhlakaipho Ngubane.

    Results – St. John’s College Easter Festival 2022 – Day 1

NewsG Graeme College schools rugby Easter FestivalThe Rhinos from Hoërskool Nelspruit put up a dominating performance in the first half of the main match of the opening day of the 25th Standard Bank St. John’s College Easter Festival against the hosts on the Burger Field to secure a comfortable 26-5 victory.

The Rhinos already managed to build up a 19-0 lead at the break thanks to their forward enjoying the upper hand. It was the prop Stefan Veldman, eighthman, Leonard Bornman, and flanker Francois Odendaal who made sure that Nelspruit had the upper hand in the physical exchanges.

St. John’s College’s inside centre, Joel Leotlela, scored a try late in the match to turn the home side’s efforts into some points on the scoreboard. Saints will face Graeme College of Grahamstown on Saturday.

Paul Roos Gimnasium eased to a comprehensive 50-6 victory over Welkom Gimnasium in the main curtain-raiser for the main match on the opening day of the festival. The team from Stellenbosch could only manage to build a 17-6 lead by half-time with elusive winger Luke Graham, scoring a brace of tries within the first ten minutes of the match.

Graham completed his hat-trick in the second half to bag his second successive hat-trick in as many weeks. He also starred with a hat-trick in Paul Roos’ victory over Grey High School in their Premier Interschools clash in Gqeberha last Saturday.

The team from Stellenbosh’s captain and flanker, Herman Lourens, had a huge impact in securing the victory. The replacement prop, Cameron Miell, also enjoyed a good day at the office as he bagged a brace of tries in the second half.

Welkom Gimnasium deserved more points on the scoreboard but somehow couldn’t manage to round off the opportunities they did create. Their captain and Nr.8, Wian Fourie, as well as inside centre, Julian Samuels, could feel happy with their performances.

Paul Roos will face Nelspruit on Saturday in which promises to be an exciting encounter. The team from Welkom will try to get back to winning ways against Hilton College.

Noordheuwel of Krugersdorp came close to claiming a major scalp and surprise during the opening day of the festival. They drew 25-all against Boland Landbou

The team from Paarl was in control early on in the match as fullback, Jandré Genis, sliced through Nories defence. Boland Landbou led by 20-11 at the break with a try by winger Matthew Gaamane late in the half keeping Nories hopes alive.

In the second half Noordheuwel took control with their halfback paring of Coen-Lee Koekman and JT Kapank where directing their team’s efforts. Nories produced some magic from within their own 22 in the 56th minute with eighthman, Marco Maree, rounding off probably the most spectacular try of the opening day of the festival to draw the scores level after Kapank’s conversions.

Nories had their chances to cause an upset. Boland Landbou recently returned from touring through Ireland so the jet lag as well as playing on the Highveld definitely had an impact on the side’s performance. Their captain Jaccus Pretorius put on a very impressive performance.

Hilton College looked like an impressive outfit as they cruised past St. Benedict’s College with 60-3. Hooker, Murray Brink, scoring a brace of tries from line-out mauls. Brink also performed well in loose.

Hilton’s flanker Jonathan Horak and flyhalf, Christopher Horak, is brothers and the sons of former English international fullback, Michael Horak. The latter represented Grey College of Bloemfontein in his school career and was part of the unbeaten side of 1995.

Hilton’s starting flyhalf for the match, Ivan Lockem, scored 16 of his side’s points via a try, four conversions and a penalty goal.

Helpmekaar-kollege of Johannesburg managed to bag a victory at the death thanks to a try from a sniping break by scrumhalf, JP Meyer. Helpies led 3-0 at the break thanks to a penalty by fullback, Jordan Jordaan. The try was scored in the final movement of the match.

Graeme College’s centre, Licebo Ngwentle, sliced through the defence in the second half to get his side ahead with the conversion by winger Asemahle Mbanga adding extra pressure on Helpies.

The difference between St. David’s Marist of Johannesburg and St. Charles College of Pietermaritzburg was the boot of the former’s fullback, Cullen Massey. He contributed 14 of his side’s points via the boot in their 19-12 victory over the visitors from KwaZulu-Natal.

Massey recorded four penalties and converted his side’s only try by flanker Max Nader. He also missed a few opportunities which would’ve given his side more breathing room in the end.

St. Charles’ College’s captain and flanker, Chinoso Ukwuoma, opened his side’s scoring after a penalty kick hit the uprights. He completed his brace just before half-time to bring his side back into the game. Before his first try, his side was trailing by 16 to nil. After his brace, they were back in the game with the score 16-12 in favour of St. David’s at half-time.

Ukwuoma was sent to the sin bin in the second half after which his side chances dwindled.

Paarl Boys’ High had too much fire-power for the Golden Lions Invitational XV. They smashed them by 83-0 with fullback, JC Mars, completing a hat-trick of tries as the team from Paarl scored 13 tries en route to the thrashing.

  • Herman Lourens leads Paul Roos to convincing victory over Grey High

Herman Lourens leads Paul Roos to convincing victory over Grey High

NewsG Paul Roos vs Grey PEA commanding and clinical first-half performance by Paul Roos Gymnasium helped them beat Grey High PE, 14-30, on Saturday 9 April in the first Supaquick Premier Interschools match of the 2022 season, hosted at Philip Field in Gqeberha.

Halftime score Grey High PE 0-22 Paul Roos Gymnasium.

Three first-half tries, two conversions, and one penalty kick from the visiting side saw them head into the halftime break with a 22-point lead. Tries came courtesy of a brace from Luke Graham and Keehan Etson, while the boot of fullback Christoff de Bruyn kept the scoreboard ticking over.

It was a flurry of attacks from the visiting side as they kept on setting up phase after phase, testing the Grey High tackling prowess. Paul Roos enjoyed most of the possession and territory with them getting their first try within five minutes of the match getting underway. Graham crashed over in the corner for the first try of his brace, the subsequent conversion missed, 0-5.

The home side managed to stunt the Stellenbosch side’s momentum at key moments in the opening 15 minutes of the match, but players like captain Herman Lourens, Wilbur Loubser, and Reno Hirst meant Paul Roos had the majority of the ball. For Grey High, it was Sive Bwowe, Caleb Kotze, number eight Tristan van Aardt and Kenneth Garrod that held firm on defense, with the boys from Gqeberha being called on to make most of the tackles throughout the first half.

Paul Roos was eventually rewarded for their clinical attacking phases when de Bruyn succeeded with his penalty attempt, 0-8. A positive period for the visitors with some enterprising attacking skills from Reuben Noble took deep into Grey High territory, a cut-out pass from scrumhalf Liam Stander to Keehan Etson allowed him to crash over for Paul Roos’ second try, de Bruyn able to add the extras off the tee, 0-15.

As the final five minutes of the opening half approached, the home side lost their talisman number eight van Aardt when he collided with Sampie Joubert. Adding insult to injury a lost lineout resulted in a counter-attack being rounded off with a brilliant display of pace by Graham as he cantered in for his second try, de Bruyn added the extras, 0-22 as the players headed into the sheds with the boys from Stellenbosch comfortably in the lead.

Graham completed his hat-trick when Etson intercepted the ball and ghosted three Grey High defenders, the outside centre had the presence of mind to link up with a speeding Graham on his right, sending the speedster over in the corner for his third and Paul Roos’ fourth try of the encounter, de Bruyn missed the conversion, 0-27.

It must have been something that was said at halftime that finally got through to the home side, but as the final 20 minutes of the match drew closer, Grey High started attacking relentlessly and started playing with confidence as they ran some creative plays deep inside their own half.

This paid off when replacement wing Zukisani Tom crashed over under the sticks for Grey High’s first points of the match, Mihle Matinise added the extras, 7-27. Almost immediately, the home side added their second try via Luvuyo Nkomphela, Matinise converted his attempt from against the touchline, 14-27.

De Bruyn added his second penalty, late in the match, bringing his personal tally in the match to ten points, with the final score on 14-30.

    Scorers:

Paul Roos Gymnasium: 30 (22) – Tries: Luke Graham (3), Keehan Etson. Conversions: Christoff de Bruyn (2). Penalties: De Bruyn (2). Grey High School 14 (0) – Tries: Zukisani Tom, Luvuyo Nkomphela. Conversions: Mihle Matinise (2).
