Poel A: Fichardtpark, Goudveld-Hoërskool, Voortrekker, Witteberg.

Poel B: Diamantveld, Jim Fouché, Noord-Kaap, Sentraal.

  • Wildeklawer fixtures for 2022’s festival announced

Wildeklawer fixtures for 2022’s festival announced

The annual Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley will once again be one of the highlights of the schools’ rugby calendar in 2022.

Paarl Gimnasium will meet Grey College in Bloemfontein on the final day that promises to be one of the top matches of 2022. The Gimmies managed to defeat Grey College (18-16) for the first time since 2012 during this year’s Monnas Easter Festival in Krugersdorp.

Paarl Gimnasium will face Helpmekaar in their opening match of the tournament in the City of Diamonds. They also met during the 2021 season when Gimmies eased past Helpmekaar by 52-5 during the Noord/Suid tournament in Pretoria.

Grey College will face Boland Landbou in their opening match in Kimberley. The opening match of the tournament will once again be on the Friday with the Bulle from Oakdale Landbou taking on the Wit Bulle from Affies. This will also be a grudge match of sort after Oakdale Landbou managed to defeat Affies for the first time ever earlier this year with a victory of 46-21.

Durban High School will make its debut at next year’s Wildeklawer. Maritzburg College will also make a return to the big league as they will also attend next year’s festival of rugby in Kimberley. The last time that Maritzburg College’s Director of Rugby, Hein Kriek, attended the prestigious Wildeklawer tournament he was in charge of Paul Roos Gimnasium.

Paul Roos Gimnasium will have a first-ever encounter against Garsfontein of Pretoria. The team from Stellenbosch will also face Glenwood during their visit to the City of Diamonds.

Meetings between Paarl Boys’ High and Affies have also been exciting matches to watch for the last couple of years. This match on the final day therefore also promises to be one of the highlights of the tournament. Boishaai will face Maritzburg College in their opening clash.

Interesting is the fact that the organisers could not find a spot for Dr. EG Jansen of Boksburg back into the line-up. The team from Boksburg was one of the top teams north of the Vaalriver in 2021.

  • Engledow to explore new opportunities

    Engledow to explore new opportunities

Peter EngledowPaarl Boys’ High’s Head of Rugby, Peter Engledow, has decided to explore new opportunities in his coaching career after a three-year stint at the prestigious Paarl school. The school announced the departure of Engledow in a press release earlier today.

Engledow’s contract of three years ended on the 30th of September 2021. He coached Griqualand West’s senior side before joining Boishaai at the end of 2018 to fill the position left vacant by Sean Erasmus who decided to make the step-up to the senior provincial setup at the Lions after five years in Paarl.

The last two years were severely disrupted on the sports fields, especially at school level, due to Covid-19. “It was three fantastic years at Paarl Boys’ High, but I have to think about my family as we move into a new phase of our lives and therefore I want to explore new business opportunities,” said Engledow.

Engledow especially refers to the way the learners lived up to the three traditions of Paarl Boys’ High, being the traditions of Good conduct, Good sportsmanship, and Good scholarship as something that stood out for him during his stay at the school. He gives credit to the staff and everyone involved.

During the disrupted three years Engledow coached the first team through 26 games, winning 23 with 3 losses.

“It has been a huge honour and privilege to have been a part of the Boishaai brotherhood,” said Engledow

Both the headmaster, Mr Derek Swart, and the governing body indicated their appreciation for the positive energy Engledow brought to Paarl Boys’ High and wished Peter the best of luck with his career.

Paarl Boys’ High has indicated they will soon start the process of appointing a replacement for Peter Engledow.

Potch Gimmies unbeaten during tour through the Eastern Cape

Wian LubbePotchefstroom Gimnasium will be more than happy with their recent tour through the Eastern Cape.

They managed to finish the tour which included five matches over the long weekend unbeaten of which a victory over the prestigious cricket nursery Grey High School of Port Elizabeth stands out.

Gimmies faced Grey PE on Saturday in a limited-overs clash on the Pollock Oval winning the encounter by 65 runs. Gimmies batted first and reached 212 before being bowled out thanks to valuable contributions by Johan Mahne (71), Martin Bullock (29), and Martin van Onselen (26).
