Wege works magic with bat and ball to defeat Waterkloof

Gysbert WegePaarl Boys’ High started their tour through Gauteng with a bang thanks to a 40-run victory Friday over Waterkloof.

Waterkloof defeated both Boishaai’s other two opponents, Affies and Pretoria Boys’ High, earlier in the season during their league matches.

It was captain, Gysbert Wege, who was leading from the front with both the bat and ball to help secure this magnificent victory. Wege (113) recorded his century off only 110 deliveries. His innings included nine fours and seven sixes.

He rounded off his performance with a five-wicket haul (5/42) to help restrict the home side to only 263 runs.

Lieben Engelbrecht (81*) also weighed in with a half-century as the team from Paarl reached 303/7 in their allotted 50 overs.

It however must be mentioned that Waterkloof was without Hardus Coetzer (SA u19 camp) and Alex Volschenk (Namibia u19). This means that there were 20 overs of which they lost the core of their bowling attack from which Boishaai managed to take the initiative.

After the high of Friday’s victory, the visiting team was quickly knocked off their high with Pretoria Boys’ High securing a four-wicket victory thanks to their captain, Pieter Pretorius

Pretorius (3/30) was the pick of the bowlers as his side restricted Boishaai to 167 runs. André Segaar also caused the visiting team some problems as he picked up three wickets at the cost of 34 runs.

Stefan Breuninger (69) managed to provide some resistance with the bat in hand for Boishaai. Robert Jordaan (42) and Pretorius (34*) were the main contributors with the bat as Pretoria Boys’ High reached the target within the 41st over.

Boishaai concluded their tour with an 89-run victory over the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria. Captain Wege was again leading from the front as he scored 88 runs as his side managed 278/7 in their allotted overs. Lieben Engelbrecht (60) and Riaan Leibolt (52) both weighed in with half-centuries.

Affies were bowled out for 189 runs with Henno Harding (41) and Jaques Lambrecht (30) providing some resistance. Johan Wege (3/29) was the pick of the visiting side’s bowlers.

  • Glenwood steal it at the end in emphatic fashion

Glenwood steal it at the end in emphatic fashion

NewsG Maritzburg GlenwoodA dramatic 19-17 win for Glenwood against Maritzburg College at Maritzburg (halftime: Maritzburg College 0-3 Glenwood) when Layron Millborrow slotted an injury-time penalty to steal the win at the end in the Premier Interschools encounter on Saturday 11 September.

Despite a stellar second half shift by Maritzburg College they could not do enough to repeat last week’s victory after trailing for most of the match, it was the very Millborrow’s kicking prowess that kept the Glenwood side in front for the entire first half, in fact, he was the only one to score in the opening stanza.

This would have been College’s second win in as many weeks after they beat Glenwood 20-12, a week ago at Goldstones, last week’s emphatic win being the first time they beat rivals Glenwood since their 35-16 back in June 2010. But it was Glenwood who got one better in this week’s Premier Interschools match.

Critical and unforced errors from Glenwood in the second half, allowed College to put the pressure on their opposition and take play deep into the half of Glenwood. College was the first to cross the whitewash when Mdanda and Radu dotted down while Glenwood’s first and only try came deep in the second half via Ghanyane.

Not much was on offer in the first half with both sides making crucial errors, not getting quality first phase ball to their respective talented backline players, but the team, Glenwood, who in the end made the least amount of errors and won all their lineouts and scrums, came out top.

A rather lacklustre first-half performance from both sides meant few scoring opportunities were created by either. The visitors got the first points and maintained the lead through regular penalty conversions via Millborrow.

Mdanda’s first score came around ten minutes into the second half when College was enjoying not only most of the possession but territory as well. Scrumhalf Els making some good playmaking decisions allowing players like Supaquick Man of the Match, Ngcobo to run with ease and so much freedom.

College collected the ball in broken play and fed the ball to their skilful backline players and with Radu out on the wing, despite nearly fumbling the ball and losing it forward, the speedster managed to gather it and canter in for the second try and at this point, less than 15 minutes to go, College looked set to claim a second consecutive win, Els added the extras, 14-9, and handed them the lead for the first time in the match.

Ghanyane’s converted try swung the momentum back in the favour of Glenwood but a late penalty conversion from Els set up a dramatic finish for this derby, 17-16 with less than five minutes to play.

Unforced errors nearly cost Glenwood in the end, but it was their resilience on the defence that kept the visitors in the game despite conceding two late second-half tries and a penalty via the boot of number nine Els.

With two minutes to go, Glenwood launched attack after attack and marched upfield towards the College try line, a penalty inside College’s half, with time up on the clock, meant Millborrow could steal the win right at the end for Glenwood, and he did so.

The entire Glenwood team embraced each other and stood behind, metaphorically and physically, their flyhalf, as Millborrow lined up his sixth attempt, missing only one earlier in the second half, he slotted it calmly much as Morne Steyn did against the British & Irish Lions in 2009 and again in 2021.

Glenwood celebrated as the College players looked on, they will have to wait another year before they can avenge this heartbreaking defeat.

  • EG beleef déjà vu toe Wit Bulle sege in doodsnikke beklink

EG beleef déjà vu toe Wit Bulle sege in doodsnikke beklink

    Puntemakers:

No surprise which school has the most old boys in the Currie Cup final

Almost half of the players – in total 20 of them represent solitary schools. In total, only 11 schools have more than one old boy represented in the final.

No surprise that Grey College of Bloemfontein has the biggest representation with five old boys – David Kriel, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, WJ Steenkamp, Marius Louw, and Henco Venter who will be in action during the prestigious competition’s final.

  • Min kragmetings so fisiek soos wanneer EG Jansen en Monnas mekaar pak

Min kragmetings so fisiek soos wanneer EG Jansen en Monnas mekaar pak

Monument: 15 Alec Vermaak, 14 Zain Henery, 13 Waldo van den Berg, 12 Enrich Bulow, 11 Brian Bianchina, 10 Ian de Fouw, 9 Deon-Divan Groenewald, 8 Tiaan Wessels, 7 Xander Schoeman, 6 Evan Retief, 5 Dewan Olivier, 4 Jan-Hendrik Bessinger, 3 Cas Botes, 2 Jaco Bezuidenhout, 1 S’fiso Magwaza.

    Afskop: 12:30

Maritzburg vs GlenwoodPremier Interschools proudly presents a 100-year-old rivalry when Maritzburg College hosts Glenwood High School at Goldstones on Saturday 11 September.

The first match between the two schools was played in 1921, at Glenwood, which the hosts won, 5-0. In the Maritzburg College Reunion encounter in June 2010 Maritzburg College beat Glenwood on Goldstones, the first time since 2006 that College managed to beat Glenwood here.

The biggest victory for College over Glenwood was 61-13 at College in 1995, while the biggest victory for Glenwood over College was 57-12 at Kings Park in 2015. College had the best in the earlier years of this encounter and still have the most wins overall. Glenwood was on a 16-match unbeaten streak against College, but for the first time since their 35-16 win back in June 2010, College managed to outplay Glenwood 20-12. This period also included two back-to-back draws in 2012.

    Rugby at Maritzburg College

Maritzburg College is traditionally the dominant school rugby force in KwaZulu-Natal. The first recorded rugby match in this coastal province took place in the Market Square of Pietermaritzburg in October 1870. The contestants were Maritzburg College (then known as Pietermaritzburg High School) and Hermansburg School. Played on a sun-baked, wheel-rutted, gravel surface, the contest lasted for more than three hours and ended in a victory, for the High School, by two goals to nil.

The arrival of James Mervyn (Skonk) Nicholson, as a master at Maritzburg College, signalled a revival in the school’s rugby fortunes. From 1948 he coached the First XV for 35 consecutive seasons, until 1982. In 1949 the First XV was unbeaten, as were ten other teams of his, while a further thirteen first teams during that period lost only one match each.

    Rugby at Glenwood

Rugby at Glenwood is the major sporting code, it instills values such as integrity, sportsmanship, loyalty, discipline, and hard work. Glenwood’s policy of participation in extramural activities, as well as the passion shown by the boys, enables nearly five hundred youngsters the opportunity to experience one of the ultimate team sports.

Glenwood fields thirty teams on a regular basis. This allows boys from all levels and abilities to be part of this wonderful game. The sports department endeavors to provide games for all teams, this has allowed Glenwood to embark on tours out the province to play fixtures against some major rugby playing schools in South Africa such as Affies from Pretoria and Grey College from Bloemfontein.

The School represented South Africa at the Sanix Youth tournament in Japan in 2008 and won top honours by winning the finals.

Bergh rig reeds sedert 2011 Boland Landbou se eerstes af. Sy broer Pieter Bergh is onlangs as Griekwas se seniorspan se hoofafrigter aangestel.

  • A modern schoolboy rugby program

    A modern schoolboy rugby program

Grey High PlayersI have been developing a schoolboy Rugby Program over the past 13 years. What I have tried to create over this period is a comprehensive coaching program that can add value to both the player and coach.

The first version was made available to Selborne College in 2008 when I served as the Master-in-charge of Rugby. It was then developed further during my time at St Andrew’s College as the Director of Rugby (2010 – 2014).

The current version of this program has been developed over the past five years while I have been at Grey High School. I have until recently been the Head of Rugby at the school (2016 – 2020). I have now moved into a full-time teaching position.

What I would like to do in this post is to share some of these ideas with you. I trust that there are some things that you will be able to implement or use to enhance your own rugby program.

The program was made available to all our players and coaches via the school’s intranet. I have shared some screenshots of the program (throughout this post) to illustrate some of the things that have been covered.

    Rugby Program contents

The following Strategy Map was drawn up for the school in 2017. One of the outcomes of this strategy map was to be “unbeaten in the Eastern Cape” (Eastern Province and Border regions). In our last full season, before Covid, we achieved this outcome with the following top sides: U15A, U16A and 1st XV. The last time this was achieved at a 1st XV level was in 2008.

We were ranked 5th on the combined school rugby rankings (14A, 15A, 16A, and 1st XV) for 2019 according to SA School Sports. In 2018 we were ranked 7th. “Better results” was another important outcome of our Strategy Map. These improved results were a proud achievement for the school.

The entire program was built around the use of a common Rugby Language i.e. a calling structure that all our teams could use. This would then be used to create continuity between our teams as they came through the system.

    rugby language

This Rugby Language extended into the use of common Coaching Principles and Language to create further continuity. It was important for the players to not become confused by coaches using different terms for the same thing. It also allowed us to use it as a platform to introduce new ideas and trends.

    coaching principles and language

An Age-Group Specific Coaching Curriculum was drawn up to ensure that there was a minimum requirement for each age group to get through in each season. This would then create a platform for the next coach and would achieve continuity between our teams. Our unique Grey High School Rugby Language was used as a foundation to build this curriculum.

    age group specific curriculum

An internal communication mechanism for the coaches was introduced called Coach Talk. I have shared some of these issues on my blog https://coachtalk.wordpress.com/. A wide variety of coaching topics were shared with the coaches through this form of communication.

    coach talk issues

A set of Coaching Cards was put together to assist the coaches in their delivery to the players. The idea behind them was to reduce the preparation time for a coach. Often as a teacher one does not have enough time to research a drill or plan adequately for a session.

These cards form part of the drills section in the Rugby Program and include video examples. I have made them available for download on my blog https://coachtalk.wordpress.com/coaching-cards/.

    coaching cards

We tracked the top 100 players in the system i.e. 20 players from each age group.

A set of Core Skill Analysis drills were conducted each season with this group of players. A database of the video footage was put together. I have shared what these tests entailed under this section https://coachtalk.wordpress.com/2016/07/22/core-skill-analysis/.

This enabled us as coaches to see how a player was developed by identifying their strengths and weaknesses. The archived footage assisted us in this process of continuous improvement. This would then provide the coach in the next age group with information.

    core skill analysis

The Player’s Performance Profile was a subjective process implemented to track the development of our top players as they move through the age groups. I have made reference to this profile under my selection post – https://coachtalk.wordpress.com/2016/07/05/selection/. A rating of a player’s performance ability was conducted by the coach and the player. It created a nice way of providing feedback.

    players perfromance profile

Position-Specific Training was something that we were able to introduce to improve our program. This gave our players the opportunity to work with past or present professional players. Some of the coaches that we were able to utilize in this capacity have been: Michael Willemse, Barend Pieterse, CJ Velleman, Ivan Ludick, Kevin Luiters, Jarryd Buys, Basil De Doncker, and Chumani Booi.

For an example of some additional areas that have been covered in the Rugby Program, I have included the following sections on Attack and Defence.

    attack

    defence

The school currently uses EncodePro video analysis software http://www.encodepro.co.za/html/rugbymain.html. A number of our matches played by our top age-group teams were coded. A full code was done for our 1st XV matches. A classroom was utilized as a viewing facility with five dedicated computers.

    encodepro

I trust that there has been a couple of ideas that you can use to assist your current rugby program. I look forward to being able to assist you, if there are areas that you would like me to share more information on. Drawing up a schoolboy rugby program is an ongoing and continuous process. I don’t feel that I will ever reach a point of where I can say it is complete.

    Beknopte telkaarte:

Waterkloof 430/9 (Hardus Coetzer 129, Stefan Driemeyer 95, Ekstras 49, SW Kemp 43, Hernus Marais 42*, Franco Bester 27, Henco Maritz 27; Tiaan Nel 3/74, Ruben Alexander 2/28); Montana 142 (Ekstras 30, Logan Bouwer 19; Khumo Thloalela 3/25, Alexander Volschenk 2/16, Hernus Marais 2/22, Christiaan du Toit 2/23). Waterkloof wen met 288 lopies.
