Bafana Nhleko names squad for u20 Series opener

NewsG Jacques GoosenJunior Springbok coach Bafana Nhleko named Lions flanker Siyemukela “Sasko” Ndlovu as captain for his side’s opening clash in the U20 International Series against Uruguay in Stellenbosch on Friday, with a bunch of former SA Schools players graduating to the next level.

No less than seven players in the starting team represented the SA Schools and SA Schools A-sides in 2019, but with no junior international rugby in 2020, all of Nhleko’s selections for this match, which kicks off at 15h00 at Markötter Stadium, will debut for South Africa at Under-20 level.

Ndlovu is amongst them, with Tyler Bocks (centre), Izan Esterhuizen (No 8), Dylan de Leeuw (lock), Raynard Roets (lock) Blaine Golden (prop) and Jacques Goosen (hooker) all former teammates of the flanker.

Nhleko indicated that this match-day squad was selected with their pending matches against Argentina and Georgia taken into consideration, while their sole focus has been the first match of the campaign.

“We decided on these combinations for a number of reasons,” said Nhleko.

“There is a short turn-around between matches and player management will be important, so we will need fresh legs against Argentina early in the week. A number of players are earmarked to get a first start then.”

“This starting team will be match-ready. Many of them formed part of the SA Rugby Academy that played a number of matches in recent weeks, and they know and understand each other, which was an important part of our thinking.

“It will be important for us to get a good start to set the tone and standard and these combinations should be able to provide us with that,” he added.

Ndlovu, a former Northwood High School learner who represented the Cell C Sharks at Youth Week level, said the opportunity to get back into top-class action, will be a huge motivating factor for the squad.

“We are facing the best Uruguay can offer and will need to respond accordingly,” said Ndlovu.

“Our guys are really hungry to play. We want to go out there and represent our country and make them proud of us. We are defending their honour. We have been training very hard for this and the time has come, thankfully, for us to apply that on the field.”

Tournament rules allow for squads to have all their non-starting players on the bench; however, a front row must be nominated before the match and only eight players can be replaced in total.

The Junior Boks will play Argentina on Wednesday, 23 June and Georgia on Monday 28 June. The tournament concludes with a last round of matches on Saturday, 3 July where the top two sides and the bottom two teams will play each other respectively.

    Junior Springboks:

15 Quan Horn (Lions), 14 Canan Moodie (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 13 Ethan James (DHL Western Province), 12 Tyler Bocks (Lions), 11 Curwin Gertse (Cell C Sharks), 10  Brandon Wilkie (Cell C Sharks), 9 Bobby Alexander (DHL Western Province), 8 Izan Esterhuizen (Lions), 7 Reinhardt Ludwig (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 6 Siyemukela Ndlovu (Lions, captain), 5 Dylan de Leeuw (DHL Western Province), 4 Raynard Roets (Vodacom Blue Bulls), 3 Blaine Golden (Cell C Sharks), 2 Jacques Goosen (Cell C Sharks), 1 Nolan Pienaar (Vodacom Blue Bulls). Replacements (from): Andre-Hugo Venter (DHL Western Province), Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Corné Weilbach (DHL Western Province) – (nominated front row), Simon Miller (DHL Western Province), Rynard Mouton (Vodacom Blue Bulls), Siyambuka Ningiza (Cell C Sharks), George Cronje (Toyota Cheetahs), Bradley Davids (Cell C Sharks), Kian Meadon (Cell C Sharks), Mnqobi Mkhize (Cell C Sharks), Dalvon Blood (DHL Western Province).

Cronje to lead extended Junior Boks

NewsG George CronjéJunior Springboks coach, Bafana Nhleko, on Saturday named George Cronje to lead the team in the forthcoming Under-20 International Series, while also calling in two more players into his squad.

Nhleko confirmed the Toyota Cheetahs loose forward to lead them in matches against Uruguay, Argentina, and Georgia, and called up Brandon Wilkie and Kian Meadon (both Cell C Sharks) to extend the squad to 30 players.

“George will lead the squad for this very significant series, while he will be assisted by Jordan Hendrikse and Sasko Ndlovu, the other two players in the leadership group, said Nhleko.

“He is a quiet guy, but the right one to lead this group at this tournament. He leads from the front and leads with his deeds. “He is the type of guy that puts the team first and that is one of our values within the group. His character exemplifies that and he is very inspirational in how he brings the team together.”

Ndlovu is a very popular team member, while Hendrikse brings direction in the way they want to approach things, Nhleko explained.

“Both will assist George well,” explained Nhleko.

“Sasko has got great respect amongst his peers and Jordan is a good driver in the team and will be important for us in terms of our tactical approach.”

Cronje said the reality of the announcement kicked in only after he was informed by Nhleko.

“At first I was just happy, but a couple of minutes later, it kicked it that the coach has entrusted our leadership group with an important task, something we will embrace to the best of our abilities,” Cronje said.

“It will be important for us to make sure the squad is all pulling in the same direction and aim for the same outcome.

“We have an amazing group of players here and they have worked so hard to finally get this opportunity to play for their country at this stage of their careers, I do not think it will be a tough task, to be honest.

“Our jobs will actually be easy, we just need to make sure all the energy and focus flows in the same direction and the enjoyment of the task at hand will follow. We all want to enjoy this moment as well, so there will be smiles on faces too.”

Cronje said the focus will shift to Uruguay now, the first opponent they will face when the series kicks off at Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch next Friday.

Wilkie and Meadon have joined the squad as Nhleko opted to use the full complement of players allowed for the tournament.

“We only named 28 originally, but decided to rather add players to expand our depth a bit,” said the Junior Bok coach.

“Brandon has been part of our Academy all along, while Kian has been in our structures, playing SA Schools two years ago.\

“When we assembled again last Friday after a short break, Zeilinga Strydom and Nico Steyn were ruled out because of medical concerns, and Quan Horn (Lions) and Bradley Davids (Cell C Sharks) replaced them at centre and scrumhalf, respectively.

“It was disappointing for the two to miss out, but both Quan and Bradley came very close to the original selection the first time, so I am pleased they got their opportunity,” Nhleko added.

The Junior Springboks face Uruguay on Friday 18 June, Argentina on 23 June, and Georgia on 28 June before the Under-20 International Series concludes with a final matchday on 3 July, where the teams will be playing against each other based on their ranking in the tournament.

Kleynhans is amper so groot soos Duane Vermeulen en speel net so ‘n barshou.

Cravenweek: 15 Dewanley van Rensburg (Outeniqua), 14 Enrique Arends (Oakdale Landbou), 13 Simeon Oosthuizen (Outeniqua), 12 Johan Leonard (Outeniqua), 11 Keith Syster (Outeniqua), 10 Morné Els (Oakdale Landbou), 9 Niel le Roux (Oakdale Landbou), 8 Phillip Kleynhans (Oakdale Landbou), 7 Johan Balt (Oakdale Landbou), 6 Paul de Villiers (Oakdale Landbou), 5 Patrick Kitete (Outeniqua), 4 Oliver Kurz (Outeniqua), 3 Dian Heunis (Oakdale Landbou), 2 Riaan Swart (Outeniqua), 1 Johan Durr (Oakdale Landbou). Plaasvervangers: 16 Elzaine Terblanche (Outeniqua), 17 Lalhuma Dyantyi (Outeniqua), 18 Michael Lamont (Outeniqua), 19 Mihlali Tshatshu (Oudtshoorn), 20 Ludik Muller (Outeniqua), 21 Clifton Jacobs (Outeniqua), 22 Rosco Seconds (Punt), 23 Keagan Coerecius (Oakdale Landbou).

Akademie-week: 15 Matthew Golden (Oakdale Landbou), 14 G Robertson (Sao Bras), 13 Jaco Pienaar (Oakdale Landbou), 12 Jacobus Esterhuizen (Oakdale Landbou), 11 L Tshawe (Punt), 10 Kobus Janse van Rensburg (Oakdale Landbou), 9 L Johannes (Gerrit du Plessis), 8 Camden Schoeman (Outeniqua), 7 Zander Stammer (Outeniqua), 6 A Adams (Outeniqua), 5 Erhard Lamprecht (Oakdale Landbou), 4 Gino de Wit (Oakdale Landbou), 3 M Conradie (Oakdale Landbou), 2 Hennie du Plessis (Oakdale Landbou), 1 Reinhardt Bredenkamp (Outeniqua). Plaasvervangers: 16 Armand Combrinck (Oakdale Landbou), 17 J Schippers (Oudtshoorn), 18 D Davids (Heidelberg Skole), 19 A Makasika (Oudtshoorn), 20 J Jacobs (Gerrit du Plessis), 21 J Jaars (Punt), 22 K Meyer (Oudtshoorn), 23 A Simons (Sao Bras).

  • Northwood on fire as they down Kearsney College in Classic Clash

Northwood on fire as they down Kearsney College in Classic Clash

NewsG Thomas CarmodyNorthwood hosted Kearsney for their annual Classic Clash in Durban North on a steaming hot afternoon with temperatures well above 30 degrees.

The match got off to a flying start when Northwood’s star flyhalf received a poor midfield kick from Kearsney in an attempt to exit their half from the kickoff. Bahji collected the ball close to the halfway line and ran untouched to score in the right-hand corner which he converted for a 7-0 lead after one minute of play.

Two minutes later the hosts also failed to exit and Kearsney turned the breakdown with Tom Carmody prominent and winger Trent Coetzee scored an unconverted try, shrinking the deficit to 5-7.

The next seven minutes caused some drama with Kearsney losing firstly scrumhalf Matthew Bergset from a late charge, and soon after the inside centre with a suspected concussion. Kearsney then took the lead following a penalty by Lethu Gwarube. Conditions might have contributed, but both teams were guilty of sloppy skills and below-par defense.

Northwood scored their second try from another poor decision by the Kearsney backs on the counter, to regain the lead 12-8. In the 25th minute, the hosts stretched their lead further to 15-8 with a converted penalty.

Kearsney attacked well during the last five minutes of the half and were rewarded with a Coetzee try which Gwarube converted, to take the score to 15-all at half-time.

Shortly after the break, Kearsney added another Gwarube penalty for an 18-15 lead. The visitors played the most constructive rugby in the next 15 minutes, but failed to convert the territory into points, even turning down kickable penalties.

Northwood adopted a kick and chase tactic which led to their next converted try to regain a 22-18 lead. The visitors’ fullback in particular was poor in fielding the Northwood kicks, and Kearsney was under pressure at regular intervals.

Kearsney had a golden opportunity for an all-important seven-pointer but poor handling prevented a sure try. Kearsney’s morale took a dip, which Northwood capitalised on, to score a converted try which was also the final score of 29-18.

Bishops record historic victory over Paul Roos at Piley Rees

NewsGImadKhanBishops recorded a historic victory of 36-13 over Paul Roos Gimnasium on Piley Rees in Cape Town on Saturday.

This was not only Diocesan College’s (Bishops) first victory over Paul Roos since 2010 but also their biggest victory ever over the visitors from Stellenbosch. This was forms part of the Premier Interschools program and was broadcasted by SuperSport.

These two school teams have been meeting each other on the rugby pitch since 1878 and the winning margin of 23 points bettered the previous highest victory achieved by the side from Cape Town. Bishops’ previous highest victory over Paul Roos was achieved 80 years ago back in 1943 when they came out on top by 28-10.

In 1942 two Springboks – the brothers Stephen and Dennis Fry – were members of the Bishops team that previously held the record for the highest victory. The captain of this side was a very talented sportsman by the name of Tony van Ryneveld playing at No. 8. He later played first-class cricket as well as captain Bishops during the 1943 season as well.

Back in 2021 and the scrumhalf, Imad Khan, as well as both centres, Bruce Sherwood and Suleiman Hartzenburg, could feel very pleased with their performances for the victorious side.

Paarl Gimnasium kept their unbeaten record intact for the 2021 season with a convincing 31-6 victory over Wynberg Boys’ High in a wet and windy Cape Town. The visitors managed to build a smallish lead of 14-6 by the break for halftime.

Gimmies’ flanker Corné Beets completed a brace of tries as he and his partner in crime Joe du Toit both produced superb performances. The loosehead prop, Corné Lavagna, is probably the best in his position in schoolboy rugby. He further cemented his reputation with yet another great performance.

Both locks of Gimmies, Kyle Valentine and Hennie Sieberhagen, also deserve a pat on the back for their performances. In the backs, it was the centre-pairing of P-A van Niekerk and CP Kleynhans that produced outstanding performances.

Paarl Boys’ High and Rondebosch Boys’ High were locked in a titanic battle in foul weather at the Tinkie Heyns field in Cape Town. Boishaai returned to their winning ways with a 30-20 victory over the home side.

Boishaai’s captain and No. 8, Abu Ndabambi, enjoyed a good day at the office, while scrumhalf, FC Fourie, also made a difference thanks to his educated kicking boot.

Rondebosch’s inside centre, Jamie Ricketts, scored a brace of tries of which the first was an absolute belter thanks to a run down the touchline by hooker, Gareth Blackmore, to set it up. Interesting is that Ricketts formerly played prop in his career.

Boland Landbou had to work hard for their 24-17 victory against SACS during the second half of the match. The team from the Agter-Paarl managed to build up a healthy lead of 21-5 by the halftime break.

The man-of-the-match for Boland Landbou was without a doubt their fullback, Jandré Genis, who had to move to flyhalf after just 15 minutes due to an injury to Joe Bezuidenhout.

Durbanville was in destructive form against Parel Vallei bagging a 55-0 victory. Their winger Levandré Horne continued his try-scoring form adding another four tries to his tally.

Stellenberg came out on top by 39-12 against Brackenfell in a difficult encounter on the latter’s home ground. The match saw the referee pull out his yellow card four times and his red card once for players from Stellenberg.

Overberg bagged a 25-5 victory over Charlie Hofmeyer from Ceres with their fullback, Ricky Martin, crossing the whitewash twice. DF Malan’s flyhalf, Zain Mynhardt, scored 16 points as his side eased past by 30 points to nil against Swartland.
