  • New mix of players for final SA u20 alignment camp

New mix of players for final SA u20 alignment camp

NewsGBrendanVenterJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux named a fresh mix of players for the fourth and final SA Rugby U20 alignment camp in Stellenbosch next week, with nine players set to make their first appearances at the camp.

The new players in the group of 22 are Diego Appollis, Christie Grobbelaar, Dawid Kellerman, Boitumelo Tsatsane, Brendan Venter (all centres), Cohen Jasper, Richard Kriel, Zeilinga Strydom and Siba Xamlashe (all fullbacks).

Former SA Schools captain Muzi Manyike (centre) was invited to the camp, but had to withdraw due to injury, which made way for Bernard van der Linde (scrumhalf) to make a return.

Four of the nine players were members of the SA U19 team that won back-to-back Internationals against Georgia in Tbilisi late last year, taking the total number of players in the group on the tour to 15.

Roux looked forward to working with the new group of players and said: “We are excited to welcome these players to the alignment camps and we believe their presence will add even more enthusiasm and energy to the group, as this is their first time with us.

“The objective of these camps was to assess the talent on offer with an eye on the SA Rugby Academy programme and the Junior Springbok squad in the next few months, and by casting our net wide over the four weeks of alignment camps, we have achieved that.

“Over the last three weeks we have been able to familiarise ourselves with the players on and off the field, and we have made good strides in exposing the players to our structures and the standards we expect, and next week will be no different.”

Fourth SA Rugby U20 alignment camp squad:

Adriaan Alberts (Xerox Golden Lions; lock)
Diego Appollis (Vodacom Blue Bulls; centre)
Christie Grobbelaar (SA Rugby Sevens Academy; centre)

Wilkie stars as team from SA is crowned champions of the Lisbon 7’s

NewsGBrandonWilkieThe Rugby Travel Barbarians from South Africa has recently been crowned champions of the annual Lisbon Junior 7’s Championship. The Barbarians defeated Grupo Desportivo Direito of Portugal in the final by 15-12 to be crowned champions.

The star player for the Rugby Travel Barbarians was Brandon Wilkie who was also crowned Player of the Tournament for his superb performances during the tournament. Wilkie, a pupil from Framesby in Port Elizabeth, scored a brace of tries in the final as his side defeated Direito by 15-12 in a closely contested match.

The Barbarians scored three tries in the final with Zander Thirion of Waterkloof scored the third. Thirion was also one of the South African star players throughout the tournament.

Wilkies’ two tries were of vital importance as the Rugby Travel Barbarians managed to turn the tables on Direito. Grupo Desportivo Direito is the most successful club in the history of Portuguese club rugby and their junior side is no different. Both his tries came through pure individual brilliance in which he showcased his power and pace.

The Rugby Travel Barbarians lost against Direito in their pool match by 17-19. They won their other two pool matches against Técnico (17-14) and Agrária de Coimbra (50-0) to book their place in the playoffs of the Cup-competition.

In the quarterfinals, Rugby Travel Barbarians eased past Gordon’s School of the United Kingdom with a convincing victory of 36-5. In the semi-final, they had a much tougher assignment against the national u18-side from the Isle of Man (19-7).

The Barbarians were captained by Hugo Bronkhorst (Hoërskool Grens) who also had an outstanding tournament. Elric Kok (Noord-Kaap) with his pace and quick feet were a thorn in the flesh of many defenders in Lisbon.

The Barbarians were coached by Len Olivier and Rassie Janse van Vuuren

The Rugby Travel Barbarians’ u16-side lost the quarterfinal of the Cup-competition but recovered by being crowned champions of the Bowl-section. The u16-side was crowned champions of the Lisbon Junior 7’s in 2019.

Graeme College renew keen rivalry with Cradock outfit

NewsGGraemeCollegeHost school Graeme College will renew a rivalry with the tough Marlow Agricultural outfit when the Pam Golding Properties Graeme Rugby Day takes place in Grahamstown on March 14.

It will be another testing encounter for the home team, but they have never shied away from this in their own tournament and it should provide a fitting finale to the traditional pipe-opener to the Eastern Province schools’  season.

Tournament director Nico van der Meulen has again lined up a fascinating array of matches, one of the featured games being the 12.40 showdown between Grey High of Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage powerhouse Brandwag.

These sides have regularly dominated the schools’ rugby scene in Nelson Mandela Bay, but have rarely played against each other.

With both teams eager to lay down a marker for the season, this should be a humdinger to whet the appetite for some equally appealing matches later in the day.

The Grahamstown schools, who will draw thousands of supporters to the Somerset field venue, will occupy the afternoon fixtures.

Kingswood has been handed one of the toughest matches in Eastern Cape schools rugby with a 13.50 showdown against Selborne.

The East London side is always a formidable outfit and the Grahamstown school’s credentials will be tested to the full.

The main curtain-raiser is an equally fascinating encounter, pitting St Andrew’s against leading Port Elizabeth school Framesby.

With their penchant for running rugby, the Andreans always delight, but they will need to match that with the forward power the Framesby outfit is sure to bring to the game.

Four new players for third SA Rugby u20 alignment camp

NewsGRynhardtJonkerFour players will make their first appearance at the third SA Rugby Under-20 alignment camp in Stellenbosch this week after being invited by Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux as the planning phase continues for the SA Rugby Academy and SA U20 season in the next few months.

Thabo Ndimande (loose-forward), JJ Kotze (hooker), Keenan Opperman (loose-forward) and Simon Miller (utility forward) will feature in the camps for the first time in a group of 18 players.

Ndimande and Kotze, in particular, are familiar with a number of the squad members, as they played alongside some of them in the SA Under-19 team on their two-match tour to Georgia late last year.

Of the 18 players, 12 attended the two opening camps, and another two players – 2019 Junior Springbok player of the year Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), and Rynhardt Jonker (centre) – attended the second camp last week.

“The alignment camps have been valuable in allowing us to work with the players and to guide them in terms of our standards and expectations with an eye on the talent identification process for the SA Rugby Academy programme and the Junior Springbok squad,” said Roux.

“The players who have attended the last two camps are grasping the structures well, so we are pleased with the progress we are making.

“This week we welcome JJ, Keenan, Simon, Thabo and I am sure they will slot in with ease since they have either played with or against most of the players in this group at some stage.”

The fourth and last alignment camp will follow from 24 to 27 February, while the SA Rugby Academy will run from Thursday, 12 March, to mid-May.
