Sendin, Du Plessis to coach SA Schools sides in 2020

NewsGSASchools2019Lance Sendin and Wessel du Plessis will take over the reigns as SA Schools and SA Schools A coaches for the 2020 edition of the U18 International Series, which will again be hosted in the Western Cape in August.

Sendin, from Hugenote in Wellington, is no stranger to the role as SA Schools coach after having steered the team in 2016 and 2017, while Du Plessis, from Grey College in Bloemfontein, is promoted from SA Schools A assistant coach to the head coaching role this year.

They take over from former SA Schools coach Mzwakhe Nkosi, who is the Xerox Golden Lions Under-21 coach and SuperSport Rugby Challenge assistant coach, and SA Schools A coach, Phiwe Nomlomo, who now works with the Cell C Sharks teams as a skills specialist.

Sendin will be assisted by Cobus van Dyk (Waterkloof in Pretoria), who retains his place in the management team from last season, while Katleho Lynch from St Johns College takes over as SA Schools A team assistant coach.

The SA Schools and SA Schools A teams will play three rounds of matches in the U18 International Series on 7, 11 and 15 August respectively. England, Argentina and France have already confirmed their participation in the series and the fixtures will be finalised in due course.

“The SA Schools and SA Schools A teams play a vital role in our development structures, as it is often the first taste of international rugby our players are exposed to, and it is pleasing to be able to appoint coaches of Lance and Wessel’s caliber,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“They are both familiar with the competition having served in the coaching structures before and they know what standards are required to be successful, so we are expecting another top-class event this season.”

  • Kearsney College trumps Hilton to progress to T20 National Finals

Kearsney College trumps Hilton to progress to T20 National Finals

NewsGHiltonvsKearsneyThe final played between Hilton College representing Kwa-Zulu Natal Inlands and Kearsney College representing Kwa-Zulu Natal Coastal was hosted at the picturesque Pietermaritzburg Oval on the 20th February 2020. There was all to play for in this match with the winner going on to represent the Dolphins in the finals.

Kearsney won the toss and elected to bowl first opting to chase down a total rather than setting a score. Hilton got off to a rocky start losing both openers Slade van Staden and C. Pistorius early on to the bowling of Matthew McCurry and Joshua Stocks respectively.

Hilton’s number three Nicholas Hatton got stuck in and looked at rebuilding the innings and ended with more than a run-a-ball 28 runs from 23 balls. He put together a 41-run partnership with Colby Dryer before he was dismissed by means of a run-out by fielder Jean-Luc Talbot, which sparked a mini-collapse in the middle order.

With the score sitting on 50/3, Hilton lost five wickets for 16 runs and in the space of a few overs. Two run-outs proved crucial for Kearsney as it reduced the chance of Hilton picking up the scoring rate.

Asande Nyawose bowled neatly in the middle overs where he ended up with figures of 2/10 from two overs and maintained the pressure built by openers Matthew McMurray 2/9 from 2.1 overs and Joshua Stocks 2/12 from 4 overs.

Matthew Boast was the last man out for Hilton and his patient knock of 24 from 32 balls ensured that the men from the Midlands had something to bowl at as they ended their innings on 102 all out from 19.3 overs.

Kearsney College got off to the worst possible start losing opener Jared Uys early off the bowling of Boast. Fellow opener Talbot dug in deep to carry his bat in order to hold up an end as he anchored the innings with a patient 27 from 26 balls which included two boundaries and one maximum.

He rotated the strike well through-out his innings giving the destructive pair from the regional finals, Dylan Hullet 22 runs from 31 balls and Cade Carmichael 37 runs from 33 balls. Both batsmen played within themselves to guarantee their side a spot in the final. The game went down to the final over as boundaries were not easy to come by.

Kearsney ended up chasing down the total in the final over of the match sending them into the National Tournament to be held in Pretoria in the beginning of March. They won the match by 5 wickets ending on a 103/5 from 19.1 overs.

    Summarised Scorecard:

    Hilton College 102 from 19.1 overs (Nicholas Hatton 28 (23b), Matthew Boast 24 (32b), Matthew McMurray 2/9, Joshua Stocks 2/12); Kearsney College 103/5 from 19.3 overs ( Cade Carmichael 37 (33b), Jean-Luc Talbot 27* (26b), Olwethu Kweyama 2/9). Kearsney College win by 5 wickets.

Saints the T20 champions of the Free State

NewsGSaintsVryKampSt Andrews of Bloemfontein were crowned champions of the Free State-leg of the national T20 championship on Sunday. Saints defeated Grey College by 40 runs in the final which was played on the Johan Volsteedt Oval.

Saints were the defending champions of the Free State and also represented the Knights’ franchise at the CSA T20 national final tournament in Pretoria last year. The team from Bloemfontein will face Yorkshire RPC of Kimberley in the Knights-final on Wednesday. The CSA T20 Challenge’s final tournament will take place in Pretoria next month.

Saints are the only school from the Knights who have managed to be crowned national champs in the history of the prestigious tournament. They were crowned national champions back in 2018.

Saints won the toss and elected to bat first and posted 125 runs before being bowled out at the end of the final over. JD Bruwer (38), Gerrit Badenhorst (27) and Reeza Alexander (23) all contributed with the bat. Juan-Dee Olivier of Grey College had a very good day with the ball in hand as he picked up four wickets at the cost of only 25 runs.

Grey College could only answer 85 runs in return with Lerato Nqoyi (19*) and Neels Volschenk (19) providing most of the resistance. Matthew Davids caused some problems for the home side’s batsmen grabbing three wickets for a mere six runs. Alexander (2/23) and Johnny du Plessis (2/22) also managed to pick up two wickets each.

Grey College was in devastating form in their two pool matches against Welkom Gimnasium and AHS Kroonstad. Marco Fouché managed to score the second-highest innings yet in the history of the competition with his unbeaten 170 runs against Rooiskool. The record of the competition belongs to Calvin Flanegan (207*) against Sand du Plessis back in 2018.

  • SA u18 Sevens team could make it four in a row in Namibia

SA u18 Sevens team could make it four in a row in Namibia

SAo.18SewesThe South African u18 sevens side will attempt to bag their fourth consecutive Capricorn 7’s title this weekend. The annual tournament will once again be hosted by Windhoek Gimnasium in Namibia from 27 to 29 February.

They were crowned champions during the inaugural tournament back in 2017 when they defeated Namibia by 45-0. In 2018 the South Africans defeated Germany by 46-0 in the final to retain their title. They completed a hat-trick of titles last year by beating Germany by 28-5 in the final.

Two players from last year’s victorious side, Latica Nela (Hilton College) and Siviwe Zondani (Grey High School) will once again make the trip to Windhoek.

Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch has with three players in Bevan Simmons, Jordan Venter, and Jared Africa the biggest representation within the squad. Kenya will also send a team to Windhoek for the first time and would probably be the biggest threat for the South Africans.

Affies speedster Bjorn van Wyk ought to cause some problems for the opponents of the South Africans with his power and pace. His best time over 100 meters this year is an incredible 10.97 seconds. Van Wyk also represented Affies’ first XV in 2019 scoring eight tries through the season.

SA Rugby also hosts an Elite Player Development camp this week in Stellenbosch. None of the players invited to this camp was considered for the SA u18 sevens side which will defend the title in Namibia.

    The SA squad is:

    Beknopte telkaart:

Waterkloof 258/9 (Hardus Coetzer 139*, Franco Bester 25, Richardt Ackermann 24; Conrad Mouton 4/52, Jonathan Vorster 2/46); Centurion 137 (Nathan Wentzel 44; Hardus Coetzer 3/24, Kyle Welmann 2/23).

Joubert was verlede jaar by Durbanville betrokke.

Deon Carstens, wat die Springbokke se skrum in drie toetse geanker het, is al vir ‘n hele paar jaar by Boland Landbou se eerstespan as breier betrokke. Jake White wat Fourie se breier tydens die Wêreldbeker-toernooi van 2007 was, is vanjaar as ‘n konsultant by HTS Drostdy in Worcester aangestel. Dit terwyl die gewese Bok-agtsteman en voorspeler-afrigter van die Blou Bulle, Anton Leonard, as ‘n konsultant by Outeniqua se eerstespan betrokke is.
