    School Rugby Results – 7 March 2020

Rugby FB iconSouth Africa’s top schools’ rugby team of 2019, Grey College, will kick-off their 2020 season today at home against Welkom Gimnasium. Affies who is celebrating their centenary also will get their season underway at home as they face Helpmekaar-kollege.

In Durban the annual FNB Classic Clash between Kearsney College and Northwood will take place. The Northwood Knights managed to defeat Kearsney last year for the first time since 1996.

  • Grey maak Saterdag geskiedenis teen Welkom Gimnasium in Rosestad

Grey maak Saterdag geskiedenis teen Welkom Gimnasium in Rosestad

Grey-kollege: 15 Sonwabo Sokoyi, 14 Joubert Schoeman, 13 Gert Steyn, 12 Emile Kotze, 11 Franco Knoetze, 10 Jean Smith, 9 Tiaan Fourie, 8 Sisonke Vumazonke (kaptein), 7 Deon le Roux, 6 Duan Ludik, 5 Hendré Kramer, 4 Danie Louw, 3 Tielman Nieuwoudt, 2 Ricardo Fourie, 1 Juann Else.

Welkom Gimnasium: 15 Donovan Don, 14 Morné Maastriet, 13 Keno Alexander, 12 Testimony Dodo, 11 Angelo Olivier, 10 Bennie Human, 9 Marco Weideman, 8 Keke Morabe (kaptein), 7 Calla Pienaar, 6 Mingo Piti, 5 Wian Muller, 4 Jarred Kruger, 3 Franco-Lee Ceaser, 2 Dylan Pretorius, 1 Vuyo Holliday.

    Skeidsregter: Zander Kubannek.

World Schools Festival called off due to Covid-19

World SchoolsAHS Logo SwartAs everyone is aware of the on-going and developing global situation regarding the spread of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) is causing major concerns for everyone, and affecting day to day activities across the world.

Governments have shut borders and imposed quarantines, and companies have imposed travel bans. The human and economic impacts on businesses have been stark.

Global authorities led by the World Health Organization have stressed that the paramount importance and underlying message is the need to contain and try to prevent the spread of this virus due to its unique characteristics from of being highly contagious.

The worst cases of outbreaks have been driven because of gatherings and large groups being together due to the spread via contact and droplet particles.

The World Schools Festival organisers have been closely monitoring this situation, particularly over the past week, and increase of spread across countries represented at the 2020 event.

We have sought to look at all information available to ensure we can fully understand the potential impacts and consequences on anyone and everyone involved in the event, wherever across the world.

Unfortunately and with sadness due to these extraordinary circumstances, we have no option but to announce that with several of the overseas teams having to withdraw, and no alternative date options to move the 2020 World Schools Festival, we are unable to continue with the 2020 event later this month.

The Festival has always provided a unique opportunity for players from across the world to come together, share cultures, experiences and play against new opposition. However, with the withdrawals and concerns being raised we also believe that each individual’s health and welfare are always the priority.

We would like to thank Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool for their support and understanding with this situation and wish Affies a wonderful Centenary season.

The World Schools Festival will continue in 2021, and we will be confirming the dates and Venue in due course.

  • World Schools Festival of 2020 to be canceled

World Schools Festival of 2020 to be canceled

World SchoolsAHS Logo SwartThe Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria’s (Affies) worst nightmare surrounding the World Schools Festival has come true.

It is expected that the organiser of the tournament, Jon Phelps of Carinat Sports Marketing, will release a statement later today to announce the cancellation of this year’s tournament.

The third edition of the tournament was supposed to be the highlight event as Affies is celebrating its centenary. The festival was to be hosted from 24 to 28 March in Pretoria with ten teams from overseas locking horns with ten of South Africa’s traditional rugby schools.

With less than 20 days left before the kick-off, this would have shocked Affies to the core. Rumours have it that some of the international schools decided to pull out which forced the organisers to cancel the event. The reason why some of the international teams have pulled out might be because of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) or due to financial issues.

No fixtures have been released for the event and on the official website, there were only nine overseas teams confirmed to date.

The nine overseas teams that were confirmed before the cancellation are King’s College (New Zealand), Africa-Pacific Dragons, Hartpury College (England), Portugal u18, Georgia u18, Ratu Kadavulevu (Fiji), USA Schools XV, Verona Academy (Italy) and Uruguay u18.

It was also speculated that Tonga u18 would be the tenth team if the organiser was not able to convince Toulon to sent their junior side to the festival. It is not sure what Affies’ will do to save the situation from their side to still host a festival of some sort or if the Noord/Suid tournament will extend their program to include more matches to accommodate the teams.

All of the rights for the World Schools Festival lie with Carinat Sports Marketing and all the schools and participating teams signs contracts to confirm their participation in the festival.

The ten South African schools that would’ve participated in the festival were Affies, Grey College, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Oakdale Landbou, Monument, Hilton College, Pretoria Boys’ High, SACS, Maritzburg College and King Edward VII.

The World Schools Festival was hosted by Paarl Boys’ High (2018) and Paul Roos Gimnasium (2019) during its first two years.
