Die Parkies se Tiaan Lange was soos Du Plessis onlangs betrokke by SA Rugby se hoë-prestasie oefenkamp.

Menlopark (moontlik): 15 Niel Beukes, 14 Reynier Oorweg, 13 Lincoln Adams, 12 Wian Faber, 11 Wihan Hendricks, 10 Marcelle Deysel, 9 Jano Joubert, 8 Charl Ehlers, 7 Francois Oosthuizen, 6 Ernst Simon, 5 Roald Hattingh, 4 Theo Daily, 3 Stefan Maritz, 2 Tiaan Lange, 1 Valere Mombers.

  • Continuity in selection key in SA Rugby Academy squad

Continuity in selection key in SA Rugby Academy squad

NewsGCheanRouxJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux opted for continuity in selection when naming the SA Rugby Academy squad on Wednesday, with 27 of the 45 players having featured in the SA Under-19 team last season, while 37 of them attended the SA Rugby alignment camps last month.

The group includes six capped World Rugby Under-20 Championship players in Celimpilo Gumede, Sibusiso Sangweni (looseforwards), Emile van Heerden (lock), Jaden Hendrikse (scrumhalf), Thabiso Mdletshe (prop) and Mnombo Zwelendaba (centre).

The SA Rugby Academy programme, which was launched in 2017, aims to balance formal education with high performance training and player welfare. Thanks to the vital support from corporates through the Rugby Education Foundation (REF) and Academy sponsors, Remgro (through the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport) and SuperSport, over 175 players have participated in the project and received education bursaries to date.

This year’s programme, which will again be steered by Roux and his Junior Springbok coaching team, will run from Thursday, 12 March, to mid-May. The squad will based at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport.

In line with the programme’s objective of ensuring holistic player development on and off the field, the goal is to have all the participants enrolled for various degrees, national diplomas, national certificates and short courses, which will be backed up by life skills and mentorship programmes and regular tutor sessions.

Only eight players in the group did not participate in the SA Rugby alignment camps, namely Asanda Kunene, Kabelo Mokoena (wingers), Jason Alexander (hooker), Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Thys Kitshoff (props), George Cronje, Uzile Tele (looseforwards), and Muzi Manyike (fullback). Tele and Manyike, however, were withdrawn due to injury.

Cronje and Wessels (both ASM Clermont Auvergne) are currently contracted to overseas clubs, while another overseas-based player Kade Wolhuter (flyhalf – Montpellier Hérault) was also invited to the Academy.

“These 45 players are among the best Under-19 and Under-20 players, and it gives us great pleasure to assist in their development both and off the field,” said SA Rugby CEO Jurie Roux.

“In 2018, a total of 30 players participated in the programme and that was increased to 45 last year, and we are delighted that we can once again name a large squad. This is all thanks to our sponsors.

“I would like to extend a sincere thank you to the corporates who support our Rugby Education Foundation, as well as Remgro and SuperSport, for making this possible and for investing in the future stars of the game.”

Chean Roux looked forward to the SA Rugby Academy programme and said: “This is a talented group of players and I am excited that we will have the opportunity to work with them daily in the next three months.

“With a number of the players having represented the SA U19 team on our successful tour to Georgia late last year, and most of them having taken part in the alignment camps we hosted in February, we have a good foundation to build on.

“Some of the players are of course be new to the group, especially the likes of George and Jan-Hendrik, who have been plying their trade abroad in the last year, but they all came through our Elite Player Development (EPD) programmes and were in the South African rugby structures until last year, so we have no doubt they will slot in with ease.

“Most of the players in this group have progressed from the SA Rugby Under-16 to Under-18 EPD structures, and the fact that they have advanced to this level rubberstamps the effectiveness of our development pathway.”

  • Newlands Day produced some exciting schoolboy rugby

Newlands Day produced some exciting schoolboy rugby

Western ProvinceThere was an electric atmosphere at DHL Newlands on Tuesday as some of the top schools’ rugby talent got a chance to show what they could do at the Western Province Rugby Schools Day.

With nine matches of 40 minutes each, there was action on the pitch from 14h00 and the schools turned out in their numbers in the afternoon, eventually close to filling the grandstand at DHL Newlands.

The rugby itself was gripping as the teams did everything to impress on their chance to play in front of a big crowd at DHL Newlands, with a large number of interested parents, old boys, and school rugby fans in attendance.

Club sides SK Walmers and Busy Bees were also in action in addition to the different schools’ teams, with plenty of tries being scored in the early games.

Scottsdene High held out against Gordons High before SK Walmers got the better of Busy Bees and Milnerton managed to shut out Melkbosstrand.

A clinical performance from Durbanville saw them dominate against Brackenfell, while Stellenberg scored the only two tries in what was a tense encounter with Bellville as the light began to fade.

Boland Landbou were impressive in their 20-5 win against SACS, taking their opportunities well to deny the locals.

One of the performances of the day came from Wynberg, who scored early and late to claim a 15-10 win against Paul Roos in dramatic style, with their gathered supporters cheering on loudly.

Another well-supported team was Paarl Boys and they were suitably dominant in their 15-5 win against Rondebosch. The final match saw Paarl Gim beat Bishops 20-15 in an entertaining match to end the night. Bishops did well to score three tries of their own, but the Paarl team scored four to end the event on a high.

WP Rugby Schools Day results from DHL Newlands:

    Scottsdene 10-5 Gordons
SK Walmers RFC 35-5 Busy Bees RFC
    Milnerton 30-0 Melkbosstrand
    Brackenfell 0-50 Durbanville
    Bellville 0-10 Stellenberg
    SACS 5-20 Boland Landbou

    Rondebosch 5-15 Paarl Boys
    Paarl Gim 20-15 Bishops

  • Waterkloof claims second national CSA T20 Schools Challenge title

Waterkloof claims second national CSA T20 Schools Challenge title

PSX 20200308 173610Waterkloof was crowned champions of the CSA T20 Schools Challenge for the second time in the competition’s history after defeating SACS of Cape Town by 15 runs in the final at the Tuks Oval in Pretoria.

SACS entered the final as the only undefeated team during the finals weekend after Klofies suffered a 38-run defeat against Kearsney College in their final cross-pool match of the competition.

The defeat in the final ended a 24-match unbeaten run in T20-cricket by SACS. The team from Cape Town put up a massive fight after Klofies set them a mammoth target of 187 for victory.

Klofies’ allrounder Hardus Coetzer (77*) played a major role with the bat in hand as he faced only 54 deliveries in his innings. Coetzer struck eight fours and a six as he helped his team to 186/6.

Opening batsman, SW Kemp (45), didn’t fail once with the bat during the competition. Kemp was also well-deservedly named Player and Batsman of the Tournament for his efforts. He scored 233 runs in his side’s six matches at an average of 38.8 per innings.

Kemp also picked up six wickets at an average of 18 runs per victim during the tournament. Richardt Ackermann was the pick of Waterkloof’s bowlers in the final with impressive figures of 4/17. He also added an invaluable 28 runs in the final with his willow.

Ackermann who stands a lanky 2.04m in his socks caused batsmen trouble throughout the tournament with the extra bounce he generates. His seven wickets at an average of 8.3 runs per victim tells it all.

The award of Bowler of the Tournament went to SACS’s spin bowler Oscar Welsh. He managed to get rid of 17 batsmen during the tournament at an unbelievable average 6.6 runs per batsman.

SACS’s captain, Daniel Smith (50), and his opening partner, Matthew Klusener (5), got their side of to a flying start before the latter was caught by Kemp off Ackermann’s bowling. Smith and Kai Curren (44) then partnered for a 78-run second wicket partnership.

This partnership put SACS right back in the game, but a excellent run-out by Zander Maree as the batsmen turned for a second run probably swung the momentum back into Waterkloof’s favour. Smith reached his fifty with the first run, but was back in the changeroom before he could lift his bat for the milestone.

SACS needed 17 runs of the final over and were still in with a slight chance with their score on 170/7. Coetzer (2/26) however ended their hopes early as he rearranged the stumps of Kaden Solomons (32) and Thomas Newby (0) with his second and third delivery of the over.

Waterkloof’s first national title came back in 2011 with JP Kok being the main destroyer as the defeated Noord-Kaap in Kimberley thanks to a six from the final delivery of the final in Stellenbosch.

    Summarised Scorecards:

    Final

Waterkloof 186/6 (Hardus Coetzer 77*, SW Kemp 45, Richardt Ackermann 28; Oscar Welsh 3/24); SACS 171/9 (Daniel Smith 50, Kai Curren 44, Kaden Solomons 32; Richardt Ackermann 4/17, Hardus Coetzer 2/26). Waterkloof won by 15 runs.
