The SA Schools team continued their fine form at the SA Rugby Under-18 International Series on Tuesday, beating Argentina 48-14 in Paarl.

The South Africans scored seven tries at Paarl Gymnasium and dominated the match from the outset. Their forwards laid a solid platform and stood up well to the physical South Americans, but it was at the back where the locals had no peers.

Six of their tries were scored by the backs, with Henco van Wyk (centre) and Dylan Alexander (scrumhalf) both scoring well-deserved braces.

Van Wyk and Zeilinga Strydom (fullback) had their opponents in trouble every time they touched the ball.

It was Argentina though that started strongest and their nippy scrumhalf, Facundo Villabla, scored a try after a powerful drive by his pack. The South Africans struck back in quick succession to take the lead and momentum back.

First Dylan “Bobby” Alexander, from Paarl Gym, scored the opening try for his team following a strong run by Strydom and a delightful offload by Tarquinn Manual (winger).

Kian Meadon (flyhalf) failed to convert, but had a successful attempt shortly after when Van Wyk ran a great line to score under the posts.

Meadon was on song again when SA Schools hooker and captain, Jacques Goosen, bulldozed his way over the line after some impressive lead-up play by the pack. The flyhalf then added a penalty goal as the SA Schools team took control of the match.

The lead was extended even further when Alexander got his brace within the opening half hour. The scrumhalf was on hand to finish off a strong run by Strydom, who found Mntungwa Mapantsela (winger) in support. His inside pass was snapped by Alexander, who scored in the corner.

The second half saw more dominance from the home team, who had their pack in full control. It was their backs though who did the job by scoring the tries.

Van Wyk scored another gem that bettered his first half effort. He was given space from a quick ruck and gassed the Argentineans from 50 meters out. Meadon converted.

An intercept try by Gideon van Wyk piled on the misery even further. The replacement flanker, who was on the field for barely a minute, held on to a stray pass and raced away to give Meadon another easy effort.

There was more to come and Strydom was next to score, a try most deserved. The fullback created some tries to others, so his effort in the corner complimented a fine afternoon for the player.

Los Pumitas had their moments, but were guilty of poor handling. When they did manage to hold onto the ball, they proved dangerous, as shown by a late try from Ignacio Ruiz (flanker).

Paul Roos Gimnasium and Grey College will lock horns for the 35th time since their first encounter back in 1967 this Saturday at the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The hosts only managed eight victories since this first encounter with probably the most memorable victory being the first interschools clash back in 1991 when the team from the Eikestad came out on top by 20-3.

Paul Roos Gimnasium boasted the likes of future Springboks Justin Swart and Cobus Visagie.

The annual interschools has been disrupted the last couple of years with the SA Schools’ programme clashing with one of the biggest school match-ups each year.

The SA Schools A team have welcomed Tiaan Pretorius (Paul Roos Gymnasium), Austin “AJ” Johnson (Garsfontein) and Lukanya “Boepa” Vokozela (Rondebosch) in their ranks this weekend. They replaced Quan Horn (promoted to SA Schools) and the injured duo of Jacques-Louis du Toit and Jordan Hendrikse.

Vokozela hails from Khayalitsha and started playing rugby with the Connect Academy. His talents were soon spotted and an invitation to join Rondebosch Boys’ High School followed. He represented DHL Western Province at Under-16 and Under-18 levels.

Pretorius already played for South Africa at youth level, having represented Team South Africa at the World Youth Olympics in Argentina last year where he was one of the stand-outs in the Rugby Sevens squad.

The energetic outside back, who missed the Craven Week due to concussion but will join the SA Rugby Sevens Academy next year, boasts a notable rugby pedigree. His dad, Torros Pretorius, was a regular for the Phakisa Pumas in his playing days and Springbok flank Kwagga Smith is his uncle.

Johnson, a very strong ball carrier and specialist inside centre, hails from Rustenburg, but played for DHL Western Province at Under-16 level after his parents moved to Cape Town. He then relocated to Garsfontein High School in Pretoria, where the hard-running midfielder is a popular and influential team member of the ‘Garsie Bere’, as the first team is known.

According to SA Schools A coach Phiwe Nomlomo, they are looking at improving in a number of areas.

“The guys learned a lot from Friday and although the turn-around was short, we have a better idea of what to expect,” said Nomlomo.

“Our defence was poor, so Wales will try to keep the ball and test that. They have a good kicking game as well, so we will be tested in that aspect of play as well. I believe we will do well if we go out and apply ourselves.”

The second round of the highly entertaining SA Rugby Under-18 International Series kicks off at Paarl Gymnasium in Paarl on Tuesday afternoon, when the SA Schools A side will take on Wales, the SA Schools team face Argentina and in the final match of the day, England and France will meet.

The SA Schools A side were outplayed by France on Friday, when the U18 International Series kicked off at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch, while the SA Schools side outplayed Wales, so the opening clash will match two sides desperate for a win.

The match between SA Schools and Argentina will be tightly contested. Los Pumitas, in their first appearance at the tournament, impressed with their overall ability in beating England on Friday, while the SA Schools team will be buoyant after a strong second half that pushed them past Wales at the Markötter Sports Fields, with heavy underfoot conditions prevailing.

France impressed with their backline’s ability to create space, even with muddy underfoot conditions, and will fancy their chances against England, who will be more streamlined with a game under the belt.

Nkosi wants SA Schools’ attack to improve

SA Schools coach Mzwakhe Nkosi said their attack will have to improve from last time out if they want to get past the Argentineans.

“Our defence was good against Wales, but if we want to be a threat to Argentina, our attack will have to improve,” said Nkosi.

“We do have some confidence after the win on Friday and taking that into tomorrow’s fixture will help the team.”

Nkosi made four changes to the run-on side, with Mntungwa Mapantsela (wing), Dylan Alexander (scrumhalf), Siyemukela Ndlovu (flank) and Connor Evans (lock) all starting the match this time around.

On the team selection for this match, Nkosi said: “We looked at rotating the squad a bit, as there is a developmental side to the tournament as well for us, so we want to see all our guys and test them against international competition.”

The Argentina side impressed against England, and Nkosi said their set-piece is exemplary: “Their scrum and line-out are first class. They are also very direct and have a couple of big boys there, so we will have to stand our man.”

Die eerste rugbyspan van die Hoërskool Heilbron is die nuwe kampioen van Afdeling 5 van die Virsekerbeker.

Die Wildebeeste, soos die eerstespan as bekendstaan, het Lyttelton Manor met 26-22 in die eindstryd van die reeks op Hans Moore se veld in Benoni geklop om as kampioen gekroon te word.  

Heilbron het met die omdraaislag ‘n voorsprong van 14-5 geniet danksy drieë deur Wolter Bennink (binnesenter) en Mike Henn (slot) ondanks die feit dat die span teen ‘n sterk wind moes speel. 

Bennink is ook na afloop van die wedstryd as Speler van die Wedstryd vir sy skitterende vertoning in die middelveld aangewys. Die binnesenter het sy vertoning met ‘n tweede drie laat in die wedstryd afgerond en ook daarmee aan sy span die sege besorg.

Hy het die bal onderskep en 40 meter vir die wendrie genael. Voor dié drie deur Bennink het Lyttelton Manor ‘n voorsprong van 22-21 geniet na ‘n verdoelde drie deur laasgenoemde se skrumskakel, Kenny Malejone. 

Malejone was Lyttelton Manor se groot ster en het amper daarin geslaag om aan sy span ‘n roemryke sege te besorg. Heilbron se heelagter, Waldo Steyn, was nie net met sy skopskoen nie, maar ook met sy aanvallende spel van agter meer as goud werd vir sy span. 

Heilbron se eerstespan het al een keer vantevore die kroon as kampioen van die Beeldtrofee, soos dit voorheen bekend gestaan het, gedra. Dit was in 2012 toe hy Curro Heuwelkruin met 48-15 in die eindstryd verslaan het om die kroon te dra. 

Lyttelton Manor is darem nie met leë hande huis toe nie met die skool se o.15-span as kampioen gekroon is, na hy vir Koster met 19-10 in die eindstryd verslaan het.

Alberton kan homself gereed maak vir topklas skolerugby wanneer die eindstryde van die onderskeie afdeling van die Virsekerbeker Saterdag op die velde van die Hoërskool Marais Viljoen hier beslis sal word. 

Die eindstryde van Afdeling 1 se drie afdelings die Beker-, Plaat- en Skild-kompetisie asook Afdeling 2 se eindstryde vind Saterdag plaas. Dit is die 99ste keer wat die Virsekerbeker (voorheen Administrateursbeker, Direkteurstrofee en Beeldtrofee) gehou word. 

In die hoofmaal pak Helpmekaar-kollege en Menlopark mekaar in die eindstryd van die Beker-afdeling. Eldoraigne verdedig sy titel as kampioen van die Plaat-kompetisie teen Ben Vorster van Tzaneen. 

In die Skild-afdeling kom die Hoërskool Middelburg teen Hugenote van Springs te staan. Ligbron Akademie en die Hoërskool Pietersburg sal mekaar die stryd in Afdeling 2 se eindstryd aansê.

There were not a lot of school rugby played over the weekend, but there were quite a few upsets over the weekend in the Virsekerbeker play-offs. Menlopark managed to not only secure their biggest ever victory over Garsfontein (72-40), but also defeated Garsies for the first time since 2011. 

Menlopark managed to defeat Monument for the first time ever the previous week and therefore moves into our Top 20 for the first time this season. Garsfontein hold on to their fourth place on the rankings.  

In the other semi-final Helpmekaar caused an upset by beating Monument by 27-22 to book their place in the final. Monnas also held on to their fifth position on the School of Rugby Rankings. 

Boland Landbou came out on top by 26-23 against Oakdale Landbou in their annual Premier Interschools. 

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.

These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility on reporting school rugby very seriously.

Daar sal vanjaar ‘n nuwe kampioen in Afdeling 2 van die Virsekerbeker gekroon word. Die Hoërskool Pietersburg sal Saterdag teen die Ligbron Akademie van Ermelo in die eindstryd van die reeks op Marais Viljoen in Alberton se veld te staan kom. 

Die trofee sal weer egter deur ‘n span uit Pumas of Limpopo se geledere staanplek kry. Secunda het verlede jaar in die o.19-eindstryd van Afdeling 2 vir Frikkie Meyer van Thabazimbi met 20-14 die loef afgesteek.

Die Pieties se losskakel, Zander de Ridder, was aan die voorpunt van sy span se sege van 35-29 oor die Hoërskool Klerksdorp in hulle halfeindstryd in Polokwane. 

De Ridder het 30 van sy span se punte in die oorwinning aangeteken. Hy het ‘n driekuns aan drieë behaal, met drie doelskoppe geslaag en ook drie strafdoele tussen deur die pale gejaag. 

De Ridder se stelskopwerk in die wind was die grootste verskil tussen die twee spanne met Klerksdorp se stelskoppers wat slegs twee van hul vyf drieë kon verdoel.

Klerksdorp was teen lemoentyd met die telling op 27-12 in Pietersburg se guns reeds met hul rug teen die muur. 

Die Ligbron Akademie het dit duidelik gemaak dat hy nie sommer geklop sal word nie. Die span van Ermelo het Wesvalia op sy tuisveld in Klerksdorp met 65-17 verniel. Dit was veral met die tempo waarteen Ligbron gespeel het, wat die Bruin Bere probleme besorg het. 

Buiten die eerstespan sal Ligbron se o.14- en o.16-spanne ook in die eindstryde in aksie wees. Interresant is dat die drie spanne tot dusver in 59 wedstryde vanjaar in aksie was en slegs een nederlaag op die lyf geloop het. Dit was toe Lydenburg se eerstespan vir Ligbron in hul ligawedstryd verslaan het. 

Ligbron se Cravenweek-agtsteman, Xavier Fourie, was soos gewoontlik op sy stukke. Agterlangs het die senterpaar, Leon du Preez en Alec Duncan, amper na wille keur bresse in Wesvalia se verdediging gevind. 

Ligbron se losskakel, Mark Niebuhr, het self die punte ingeryg. Hy het ook 30 van sy span se punte in sy sege oor Wesvalia aangeteken. Niebuhr het een van sy span se agt drieë gedruk, al agt die drieë verdoel en ook met drie strafdoele geslaag. 

Vir die verloorspan het die slot Jason Nel vir Ligbron probleme in die lynstane besorg. Hy het amper al hul lynstaanbesit afgeneem. Die vaskopstut, Dean van der Westhuizen, verdien ook ‘n klop op die skouer vir sy vertoning in die wedstryd. 

In die o.15-eindstryd van die Virsekerbeker sal ondersteuners uiteindelik weet wie die beste span vanuit die Luiperds is. Die Hoërskool Klerksdorp kom teen Potchefstroom Volkskool in die eindstryd te staan. Daar was nie vanjaar ‘n Luiperd-eindstryd nie vanwee ‘n hofsaak oor of Klerksdorp ‘n speler onwettig ingespan het. 

Die Noordvaal Skolerugby-vereniging het die saak in die hooggeregshof verloor en Klerksdorp is as Luiperds se naaswenners net voor die eerste uitspeelwedstryde tot die kompetisie toegelaat.

Die Hoërskool Upington se eerstespan het sy aartsvyand Duineveld waarskynlik ‘n reuse guns tydens die twee skole se jaarlikse Groot Interjol in Upington bewys.

Die Velties het naelskraaps met 25-24 as oorwinnaars van die veld gestap, maar dit nie weer so oortuigend soos vroeër vanjaar tydens die Klein Interjol (43-5) nie. 

Duineveld is vanjaar die voorste skolespan in die Noord-Kaap en Uppies se afrigters, J-Ell Slabbert, Jacques Swanepoel en Bone Boonzaaier, sal baie tevrede wees oor hoe hul span die seisoen afgesluit het. 

Duineveld kom Vrydag op Tafel Lager-park teen Welkom Gimnasium in die halfeindronde van die Kovsiestreek-kompetisie se Shimla-liga (vir mediumskole) te staan. Gimmies het verlede jaar vir Duineveld met 61-7 in die eindstryd van die reeks afgestof. 

Die Velties sal dus Vrydag beter rekenskap van hul rugbyvermoë wil gee. Dis hierom dat Uppies met hul inspirerende vertoning waarskynlik ‘n guns aan Velties bewys het. 

Duineveld se loskopstut, Nicky Ras, is welverdiend as Speler van die Wedstryd aangewys. Hy het deurgans die donkiewerk verrig wat sy span instaat gestel het om uiteindelik as oorwinnaars van die veld te stap. 

Die agtsteman, Muller du Plessis, het met sy spel ook ‘n reuse impak op die uitslag van die wedstryd gehad. 

Vir Uppies was dit een reuse spanpoging, maar die vertoning van die binnesenter, Hein Neser, moet uitgesonder word. Hy het net meer as ‘n uur voor die belangrike kragmeting ook sy skool se eerste hokkiespan tot ‘n sege van 3-0 gehelp. 

Daar was ‘n sterk wind van ongeveer 25 kilometer per uur in Uppies se blaaie tydens die eerste helfte en hulle het daarin geslaag om ‘n skrale voorsprong van 10-8 teen rustyd te geniet. Die manne in Oranje het daarna in die tweede helfte daarin geslaag om die voorsprong tot 17-8 te rek. Velties het hierna beheer van die kragmeting geneem.

Die voormalige toetsskeidsregter, Lourens van der Merwe, het die wedstryd hanteer.

Die Hoërskool Hugenote van Springs het vir die grootste opskudding van die naweek in die Virsekerbeker gesorg toe hy vir Lichtenburg met 19-17 in die halfeindronde van die Skild-afdeling uitgeskakel het. Die span van Springs het die Liggies op hul tuisveld geblitzkrieg deur vinning ‘n voorsprong van 12-0 op te bou.

Soos die geval met meeste van die wedstryd Saterdag het die wind ‘n faktor gespeel. Hugenote het die wind in hul blaaie gehad in die eerste helfte en ‘n voorsprong van 12-5 teen rustyd geniet.

Die Liggies het vroeër vanjaar vir Hugenote met 44-29 in hul ligawedstryd verslaan. Hugenote het egter uitstekend daarin geslaag om Lichtenburg se sterspelers, Ruben Oosthuizen (senter) en Jacques Stander (skrumskakel), hom te slaan.

Liggies se flanke Wessel Nortman en Stiaan Loots het voorlangs blinks vertonings gelewer.

Die Hoërskool Middelburg was met 28-20 in ‘n wipplankstryd in die ander halfeindstryd oor Heidelberg Volkskool baas. Die Middies het met lemoentyd ‘n skrale voorsprong van 14-12 geniet.

Sy Cravenweek-loskopstut, Sipho Nzoto, was saam met sy stutmaat, Bradley Ludeke, op hul stukke in die vastelos. Ludeke het die aanvoorwerk vir albei Nzoto se twee drieë gedoen. Nzoto kan indien hy op sy vertonings vanjaar voortbou ‘n speler wees om dop te hou in 2020.

Die wenspan se losskakel, Ricardo Schonfeldt, het ook ‘n goeie dag op kantoor beleef en al vier sy span se drieë verdoel. Die beste vertoning op die dag het egter aan die binnesenter, Jan Joubert, behoort.

Vir die Volkies het sy skrumskakel, Fredrich Barnard, agterlangs goed vertoon. Voorlangs kan die agtsteman, Evan Jordaan, en die flank Gideon Lubbe meer as tevrede met hul vertonings voel.

Die Skild-eindstryd vind Saterdag op Marais Viljoen in Alberton se velde plaas.
