  • Goosen, Cairns to lead SA Schools teams in u18 International Series

NewsGJacquesGoosenBorder hooker Jacques Goosen will lead the SA Schools team, and DHL Western Province No 8 Jarod Cairns has been appointed captain of the SA Schools A team for the forthcoming Under-18 International Series, which kicks off in Stellenbosch on Friday.

Goosen, from Selborne College, will be supported by two vice-captains in the SA Schools team, Tyler Bocks (DHL Western Province and Paarl Boys High centre) and George Cronje (Bizhub Free State Cheetahs and Grey College No 8) respectively.

Cairns, from Paul Roos Gymnasium, will be assisted by Border and Selborne College scrumhalf, Daimon O’Connell, who is the SA Schools A team vice-captain.

The U18 International Series kicks off at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch on Friday, 9 August, with matches to follow at Paarl Gymnasium on Tuesday, 13 August and Hugenote High School in Wellington on Saturday, 17 August.

The SA Schools team will open up their campaign against Wales, followed by clashes against Argentina and England, while the SA Schools A team will meet France, Wales and Argentina respectively.

Unfortunately for SA Schools coach Mzwakhe Nkosi, the injury curse has hit already – only two days into the team’s preparations – with Bryan le Roux (prop) ruled out due to an ankle injury. Sibusiso Shongwe has been promoted from the SA Schools A team, while Assupol Blue Bulls prop Gerhard van der Merwe (from Garsfontein) has been called up to the SA Schools A team as a replacement.

Nkosi was pleased with the progress his team has made since assembling in Stellenbosch on Sunday and said: “We are starting to look like a team, and the vibe in the camp is very good, which is great for us as management.

“This tournament provides great exposure for these players, and it is even better that they get to do so against quality nations like England, France, Wales and Argentina. So we would like to see them grab this opportunity with both hands and show their talent.”

He added: “The opposition will be really tough and organised. Three of the teams had the advantage of playing in a junior Six Nations, so we are expecting enterprising play and physicality from the participating teams.”

SA Schools A team coach Phiwe Nomlomo was equally pleased with his team’s preparations so far and said: “It has been great so far. The intensity has been good and the excitement among the players to represent their country is fantastic. We are expecting a good challenge from the opposing teams, but we also need to go out there and show what we can do.”

Nkosi and Nomlomo will announce their teams for Friday’s opening games on Thursday.

School of Rugby Rankings – 5 August 2019

Rugby FB iconPaarl Gimnasium secured their second placed position on School of Rugby’s latest rankings with a narrow 18-17 victory over Paarl Boys’ High in their annual interschools at the Faure Street Stadium in Paarl. This was the first time in five years that Gimmies came out on top during the biggest interschools in the world.

Boishaai kept their third place position, while Grey College is still sitting pretty on top of the rankings. Fifth placed Monument suffered a 15-22 defeat against Menlopark. The team from Pretoria is currently ranked at 23rd, but will probably move into our Top 20 as the season moves to a close.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.

These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility on reporting school rugby very seriously.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@rugby.supersportschools.com – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.

Parsons wins double honour at stellar breakfast awards

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today hosted its annual CSA Breakfast Awards in association with KFC, where the stars of amateur cricket were honoured for their stellar performances over the past 12 months.

The Awards Breakfast commemorates the accomplishments of the blossoming talent in the country as CSA continues to drive its vision of making cricket a truly national sport of winners.

In a lavish ceremony at the Maslow Times Square Hotel in Pretoria, 25 awards were handed out, with the big winner being South Africa Under-19 captain Bryce Parsons of Central Gauteng, who walked away with two prizes.

The 18-year-old all-rounder was named Coca-Cola U19 Cricketer of the Year for his efforts with the national team and also collected the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week Player of the Tournament.

The KFC Mini-Cricket coach of the year award went to Marelise Lombard from Central Gauteng Lions who has served the programme with composure over the years, while the KFC Mini- Cricket Co-ordinator was scooped by Eastern Province’s Gugu Ndulama.

Neil Brand of Northerns bagged the CSA Student Cricketer of the Year prize, while his former coach at the union, JP Triegaardt, who has left over the winter to rejoin Northern Cape, picked up the Pitchvision Senior Provincial Coach of the Year title.

Northerns also swept the women’s awards with Nadine de Klerk named CSA Girls U19 Player of the Tournament for her supreme all-round efforts during the competition. Her more senior compatriot Sune Luus, who also captained the Proteas Women in 2019, was voted CSA Women’s Provincial Cricketer of the Year.

The CSA Three-Day Provincial Cup and Provincial One-Day Cricketers of the Year went to Glenton Stuurman of Eastern Province and Mpilo Njoloza of Western Province respectively.

There were joint winners in the Kemach JCB Groundsman of the Year category for the first time with Bethuel Buthelezi and Evan Flint securing the award for their outstanding work in keeping the Bidvest Wanderers Stadium in a world-class state.

“Congratulations to all our award winners. They are the individuals who keep the spirit of our amateur game so strong. And a special word of congratulations to those who have had to overcome disabilities to be honoured here today. We can be very happy with the strength of our various development programmes that play a vital part in our talent identification pipeline,” commented CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe.

“A special word of thanks also to all our sponsors and particularly KFC for their support of this function as well as the KFC Mini-Cricket Programme which is the best of its kind to be found anywhere in the world and is the launch pad for our young cricketers to live their dreams,” concluded Mr. Moroe.

“At KFC we believe the secret recipe for success lies in nurturing South Africa’s great talents and building lasting partnerships that make this programme possible,” commented Dhruv Kaul, Chief Marketing Officer at KFC.

“2019 marks a remarkable 10-year partnership milestone and we are excited to celebrate the 2018/19 KFC Mini-Cricket Coach and Co-ordinator of the Year winners. Marelise and Gugu are true examples that sheer hard work and determination drives positive change and impact in local communities. We also thank our many volunteers who continue to be the heart of the programme, making it a success in every corner of the country.

“Through our partnership with Cricket South Africa, the KFC Mini-Cricket programme will continue to thrive, uplift communities, nurture and produce tomorrow’s heroes and supporters of South African cricket,” he added.

Die Tralies was laas in 2015 as kampioen gekroon.

In Welkom se HT Pelatona-stadion was daar amper ‘n reuse opskudding.

  • Historic Overview – Paarl Gimnasium vs Paarl Boys’ High

PremierInterschools1This coming Saturday Premier Interschools hosts one of the biggest, if not the biggest, derby matches in schoolboy rugby.Paarl Boys’ High versus Paarl Gimnasium. The Galpille against the Bloedworse, South vs North.

This is the time of year when the town of Paarl is divided into two camps for a whole week. A Rivalry that has existed for more than 100 years culminates in the main rugby match between the two schools at the Faure Street Stadium at 15h55 on the Saturday.

The first match was played in 1915 when masters, schoolboys and old boys all played together. This was the format up to 1927 after which it was decided that the Interschools matches should only comprise of schoolboys. The current format as we know today started officially in 1929.

The Interschools was only interrupted for one year in 1928 when for some reason lost in the midst of time, the derby did not take place.

The intensity of this derby is reflected in the average winning margin in over 100 games of only 5 points. There are no easily won Interschools games. Each point gained is precious and defence is usually rock solid. There have been 11 drawn matches and three of them ended in a 0-0 draw, the last one in 1986. This shows the commitment and pressure that can build in these games.

During the week there will be functions and re-union get togethers with old friends and foes reminiscing about the days gone by. The first battle on the rugby field is fired on the Wednesday evening as the two Old Boy teams lock horns in what can only be described as a friendly but fierce game.

Thursday afternoon sees the “Goffels” and “Hommels” (G and H teams) play their own unique brand of rugby before Friday morning when it kicks into the business end of the weekend. This is the time when the two schools have their Big Brags in the school hall.

Here the Rugby and Hockey warriors that will represent their respective teams on the Saturday are introduced and the first teams get capped for Interschools.

Friday afternoon it is off to the rugby fields of the host schools to watch all the rugby games The two big matches on the Friday afternoon is the u/14A match and the “main” match of the day is the rugby game between the school’s third teams, known among the locals as the “Chiefs” vs “Chippies”.

There are only 4 rugby matches played on the Saturday at Faure Street Stadium. The games usually start around 12h00 with the u15A match, followed by the u16A, the Seccies and then the main match commencing at 16h00.

History – Paarl Boys’ High vs Paarl Gimnasium

    Paarl Boys’ High’s 2019 Season:

The 2019 team started a bit tentatively and at first looked like they are struggling to find their rhythm. In a 20 minute a side match at Newlands they lost 5-0 to Paul Roos and then had a draw against Helmekaar at the North vs South tournament. They managed to come back from behind and clinch a last minute win against Monnas at the same tournament before they seem to start hitting their straps at Wildeklawer tournament.

Here they had good wins against Glenwood and Affies and kept building and playing better. Against Grey College they were in front at halftime, but a sudden collapse in concentration together with a Grey resurgence in the second half took the game away from them. They bounced back against Paul Roos the next week and since then they have been steadily getting to top form for their greatest test to date.

The players were also rewarded for their good form and No 8 Gideon van Wyk, Flyhalf Kian Meadon and centre Tyler Bocks all got SA Schools colours while prop Rynhardt Rijnburger, centre Quan Horn and fullback Jacques Rossouw all got chosen for the SA Schools A team.

    Paarl Gimnasium’s 2019 Season:

Paarl Gimnasium is looking ominous this year and have been racking up the points against their opponents. Their only hiccup came against a strong Grey College at Wildeklawer in May, but before that and since that game, they have been wiping the floor with all and sundry, except Outeniqua who gave them a run for their money.

As a unit they have been playing very well and even a couple of injuries did not deter their flow.

Scrumhalf Dylan (Bobby) Alexander has been awarded his SA Schools colours while livewire flanker Pierich Siebert and lock Marco van Rhyn was picked for the SA Schools A team.

    Rugby at Paarl Gimnasium

Paarl Gim is without a doubt one of the Big Five rugby schools in South Africa. They have to date produced 24 Springboks of which 22 have been capped in tests for South Africa, the latest being Louis Schreuder.

Rugby started at the school in 1902 and in the early years no strict age groups were defined and the school operated as a rugby club, the staff frequently turned out in the colours of the school. The headmaster back then, FC Wahl also captained the school’s 1st XV.

    Springboks from Paarl Gimnasium:

Japie le Roux (1906), Pietie le Roux (1906), Steve Joubert (1906), Pierre de Villiers (1928), JC van der Westhuizen (1928), Jan Pickard (1953), Hugo van Zyl (1958), Wynand Mans (1965), Schalk Burger sr. (1984), Kobus Burger (1989), Kobus Wiese (1993), Balie Swart (1993), Mornay Visser (1995), Pieter Rossouw (1997), De Wet Barry (2000), Louis Koen (2000), Chris Rossouw (2000), Marius Joubert (2001), Jean de Villiers (2002), Schalk Burger jr. (2003), Ashley Johnson (2011), Lourens Adriaanse (2013), Handré Pollard (2014), Louis Schreuder (2017).

    Rugby at Paarl Boys’ High:

Rugby is an integral part of the Paarl Boys’ way of life. It is important to win, but that should not be the primary objective. A sportsman may never be abused to ensure the success of a team. The primary objective at Paarl Boys’ High must be one of enjoyment, for both player and coach.

Whereas they agree with the legendary Vince Lombardi when he said: ‘’Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing’’ they hold winning to be more than just points on the board. Winning relates to the values, commitment and the pursuit of the best of one’s abilities.

PBHS has produced 21 players that have represented South Africa since 1906 of which 19 have been capped for tests. They have provided some of the legends and most famous Springbok rugby players ever to have played in the Green and Gold.

Players like Oom “Boy” and Fanie Louw, Piet “Spiere” du Toit, Mannetjies Roux, Ryk van Schoor, Carel Du Plessis and Corné Krige. Their latest contribution is prop Thomas du Toit, captain of the 2013 1st XV.

    Springboks from Paarl Boys’ High:

Dirkie de Villiers (1906), Cocky Hahn (1910), Louis Louw, Champion Myburgh, Jack Bester (1924), Boy Louw (1928), Fanie Louw (1933), Manie Geere (1933), Johnny Bester, Ben du Toit (1938), Ryk van Schoor, Theuns Briers (1955), Piet du Toit (1958), Mannetjies Roux (1960), Haas Schoeman (1963), Carel du Plessis (1982), Wium Basson, Corné Krige (1999), Gurthro Steenkamp (2004), Frans Malherbe (2013), Thomas du Toit (2018).

    Paarl Boys’ High Springboks

Legendary “Oom” Boy Louw and Carel du Plessis also coached the Springboks. Corné Krige is still the only SA Schools captain who went on to captain the Springboks as well.

The game will be broadcast live on Saturday 3 August on SuperSport Ten from 15h55
