Eldoraigne sal Virseker-titel teen nuwelinge Ben Vorster verdedig

  • SA Schools ‘A’ cave in to French onslaught

NewsGFranceSAFrance opened their SA Rugby U18 International Series campaign with a commanding 43-19 win over the SA Schools ‘A’ side at Markotter Sports Fields, Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch on Friday.

The French held a 31-14 lead at the break and although the SA team came back strongly in the second half, two late tries confirmed the dominance the Europeans had in possession and try-scoring opportunities.

They also won the physical battle, leaving the SA side unable to stop the attacking threat from their opponents.

France struck early with some solid attacking drives and flyhalf Leo Barre ran through a hole created by his pack. The conversion was good and France held an early 7-0 lead.

That was extended in the 13th minute when outside centre, Logan Tabet ran through some weak midfield defence to score under the poles. Nolann Le Garrec’s second conversion pushed the score out to 14-0.

From the restart the ball was worked wide and winger Jessy Maizier ran all of 50 meters to score in the corner.

The SA Schools A’s defence was all over the place and after some delightful interplay, centre Ethan Randale rounded off a well-deserved team try to give France a 24-0 lead.

It took the SA Schools A side all of 18 minutes to get their first points. Following solid possession and some sustained attack, left wing Indiphile Tyeda was worked into space with the softest of passes from prop Rhynardt Rinjsburger to score under the sticks.

The South Africans were finding their feet and some rhythm on attack and the pressure on the French defence became too much. Barre was yellow-carded for slapping the ball down near his line.

The locals used their forwards to commit the French defenders and prop Philip Masango crashed over from close range. Jordan Hendrikse kicked a delightful conversion to cut the lead to 14-24.

The comeback was almost thwarted when Tabet ran a great line to expose the midfield again, but his try did not count as foul play at the preceding ruck was picked up and the try was cancelled out.

The reprieve for the South Africans was short-lived however, as they were again shown up defensively in the wider channels, with winger Eric Boussard beating two players on his way to the try-line.

The second half started much more competitively, with the SA side showing a more grit in defence. They did not stop attacking though and replacement-hooker, Teague Loelly, scored from a driving maul to get the scoreboard going in the second half.

That brought them right back into the game, but another lapse of concentration cost them dearly as first no 8, Killian Tixerot, scored from a simple 8-9 move and then Theo Ntamack-Mayenga dotted down in the corner to seal a very convincing win.

    SA Schools A 19 (14), France 43 (31)

    Scorers:

France 43 (31) – Tries: Leo Barre, Logan Tabet, Jessy Maizier, Ethan Randale, Eric Boussard, Killian Tixeront, Theo Ntamack-Mayenga. Conversions: Nolann Le Garrec (4). SA Schools A 19 (14) – Tries: Indiphile Tyeda, Philip Masango, Teague Loelly. Conversions: Jordan Hendrikse (2).

  • SA Schools edge Wales U18s in tight match

SA Schools edge Wales U18s in tight match

The SA Schools team opened their SA Rugby Under-18 International Series with a hard-fought 23-13 win over Wales thanks to a better attacking effort in the second half of their clash at Markotter Stadium at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.

The SA team trailed 6-10 at the break, but managed to play the big points better in the second half to overhaul their opponents.

Wales deserved credit however, as they refused to stop chasing the game and were hard on attack at the final whistle.

The opening points came the way of SA Schools flyhalf, Kian Meadon, who slotted a penalty from close range.

SA Schools fullback, Zeilinga Strydom, intercepted a pass 60 meters out and raced in fro what appeared to be first try of the match, until he was called back for a neck roll by a team mate and the decision reversed to a penalty to Wales, allowing flyhalf Thomas Mathews to level the scores.

Wales then took the lead after a period of sustained pressure, with centre Mason Grady bursting open the midfield to dot down, with Mathews converting.

Meadon scored a second penalty kick to cut the lead to four before half time.

The South Africans regained the lead early in the second half via scrumhalf, Jurich Claasens.

From a powerful scrum, the scrumhalf played a move off the back of the scrum with No 8, George Cronje, and as the gap opened up, he raced through to score next to the poles.

The conversion was good to delight and the crowd happy with the lead and they were soon back on their feet for a great run and try in the corner from Jan-Hendrik Wessels (prop).

The lead jumped out to 18-10, as the momentum swung towards the South African side.

However Mathews kicked a second penalty to cut the lead to five once more and there were some anxious moments on both sides, with both teams coming close to claiming a decisive score.

A crucial turnover by South Africa on their own line eased the pressure and when Wales conceded another penalty via a high tackle, the SA side swooped.

They forced an attacking line-out and from that, kept plugging away with bursts close to the ruck until the Welsh defence buckled and flanker, Jarrod Taylor, burst through from close range for a try five minutes from time to seal the deal.

    Scorers:

SA Schools 23 – Tries: Jurich Claasens, Jan-Hendrik Wessels, Jarrod Taylor. Conversion: Kian Meadon. Penalties: Meadon (2). Wales 13 – Try: Mason Grady. Conversion: Thomas Mathews. Penalties: Thomas Mathews (2)

  • Cracking start to SA Rugby Under-18 International Series

AonSeriesThe opening day of the SA Rugby Under-18 International Series delivered some cracking rugby at Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch on Friday, with the SA Schools, Argentina and France scoring hard-fought wins over Wales, England and SA Schools A respectively.

The SA Schools team delivered a 23-13 over the Welsh, while Argentina outplayed England 29-19 in their first appearance of the Series, now in its tenth year.

In the opening match of the series, the French team had too much attacking prowess for the SA Schools A side, winning 43-19.

SA Schools A coach, Phiwe Nomlomo said their slow start cost them. “We did not start well at all,” he said. “We possibly took too long to get into the game and that cost us in the end.”

The coach remained positive that they can turn their fortunes around for their next match against Wales on Tuesday.

“Some things worked well for us. We looked good with ball in hand, our loose forwards were especially monstrous with ball in hand. We will try and get them into the game a bit more next time around.”

He warned that the team will have to improve their defence as well: “For sure, defensively we will have to improve a bit, especially our one-on-one defense and if we do that, we will be a better team already.”

SA Schools coach, Mzwakhe Nkosi, said the second half effort from his team showed their character.

“There is a lot to take out of this game,” he said. “We won the big moments and that was important. Our attack was not the greatest. They did beat us to the breakdown in the first half, but we had a look at that and improved so much in the second half.”

They now face Argentina: “It is going to be another tough match,” he said. “We need to take the lessons from this, improve on that and then take on Argentina with those boxes ticked,” he said.

    Summary of results and scorers:

    SA Schools A 19 (14), France (31) 43

  • Ten years of top class U18 international rugby in SA

AonSeriesWhat do Siya Kolisi, Zain Davids, Phendulani Buthelezi, Owen Farrell, Billy Vunipola, Jefferson Poirot and Adam Beard have in common?

The U18 International Series celebrates its 10-year anniversary this season, and judging by the growing list of national players who have come through the ranks, including Springbok captain Siya Kolisi and his 2019 Junior Springbok counterpart Phendulani Buthelezi, it has become an invaluable stepping stone in the various participants’ careers.

The junior international competition had humble beginnings in 2009 with Italy, France and England touring the Western Cape, and over the years it was adapted to include a few Under-19 players from some visiting teams, which saw a change to the U19 International Series.

The tournament has become a key feature on the South African rugby calendar, with every player participating in the U18 SA Rugby Youth Weeks competing for places in the SA Schools and SA Schools A teams.

With the likes of Kolisi, Buthelezi, Frans Malherbe, Bongi Mbonambi, Steven Kitshoff, Malcolm Marx, Handré Pollard, Damian Willemse, Jesse Kriel, Warrick Gelant, Zain Davids, Stedman Gans, Curwin Bosch and Salmaan Moerat taking their first steps in the international arena in the competition, it is no surprise that players regard it is the ultimate achievement at school level.

The same applies to the visiting teams – which has included England, France, Wales and Italy over the years – who have seen the likes of Billy Vunipola, Owen Farrell, George Ford, Jonathan Joseph (all England), Galletier Kellian, William Demotte, Jonathan Danty and Jefferson Poirot (all France) and Adam Beard (Wales), among others advancing to their senior national teams.

What makes the tournament particularly significant is that for all of the players who are selected to represent the SA Schools and SA Schools teams, in particular, it marks the first time they achieve national honours and the first time they face international sides wearing the Springbok on their chests.

The short turnaround time between matches also exposes them to the high demands of international rugby, especially for those who advance to the Junior Springbok team where they are tested to the limit physically with five matches less than three weeks at the World Rugby U20 Championship.

This year, we welcome Argentina to the Series for the first time, and given the strong statement they are making in the international arena through the Los Pumitas and the Pumas senior side, and at provincial level in the Currie Cup First Division and Vodacom Super Rugby level, there is no doubt that their up-and-coming junior players will use this as a platform to launch their careers.
