  • Breaking the Code of Silence in Schools

SafeSchoolsGuideLearners choose to adopt a culture of silence when faced by the myriad complex challenges being negotiated by adolescents today. As parents, educators, and caregivers this apparent inability to communicate is baffling and frustrating.

How do we break through this and encourage our young people to speak out and not to keep situations of abuse, fear, bullying and inappropriate behaviour secret from those who can help them?

Over the course of the last decade, I have increasingly been aware of how, through the media, more and more cases are being disclosed of sexual assault, violence, and serious bullying.

Many of these stories are generally only being uncovered a long time after the initial crime was perpetrated. So why are children not speaking out about these challenges sooner?

Today’s teenagers are being raised in what I could quite easily describe as “The Perfect Storm” – a combination of internal factors that are in place by virtue of their age and their stage of personal, physical, psychological and social development. This is coupled with a barrage of external factors that have never been experienced in quite this way before in our human history.

What we know about teenagers is that they have a driving need to be accepted. This is something that very often parents forget. Teenagers need to be accepted for who they are and even more so because they are at a time in their lives when they are continuously self-validating.

What acceptance do teenagers need from us?

Much of their life takes place in the cyber world. Whether we’re talking about various communication platforms or online gaming, these are the things that most teenagers identify as a significant part of their world.

Parents, however, will very often demean their world with thoughtless, condescending comments
like: “Stay off your phone!” or “You don’t need to be permanently Whatsapping!” or, “Why are you always glued to the screen?”

Of course, regulating our children’s time on the phone and devices would be beneficial, but if, as parents and caregivers, we took more interest in the cyber-world that our children are growing up in, they would be more likely to ask us to assist them when challenges in their world arose.

Boys and girls respond to this predicament differently based on socially-enforced gender divisions.

The Cowboys don’t Cry mantra still typically defines boys’ reluctance to communicate, and girl teenagers tend to psychologically self-flagellate themselves with their own insecurities which informs their silence.

    Bullying

The next element of this Perfect Storm is today’s youth are mostly being raised more and more without the ability to resolve conflict. All too often parents and caregivers jump in and solve the problems of children without giving them an opportunity to resolve challenges on their own.

What we have is a human being who really needs someone to affirm and accept their existence in a world which hasn’t allowed them to learn the social skills to address conflict.

They become extremely easy to manipulate and to take advantage of. We have thus created fertile ground for the predator, drug dealer, human trafficker, the teacher with ulterior motives, etc.

What we see is an inexperienced insecure young person trying to fit into a world that even their parents are not trying to engage in; with no ability stand up for themselves now engaging with people who want to take advantage of them.

When put like that, it doesn’t seem like rocket science to realize that the Perfect Storm our teenagers are living in has been quite extensively created by us.

We can’t wave a magic wand and undo it, so the question is, how do we create a platform, a vehicle or a mechanism for them to put up their hand and ask for help. And for someone who can and wants to help, to be there to grab it.

To try and work towards having conversations about these issues Durban High School is hosting a one-day seminar has been put in place to address secrecy faced in schools. Open to high school management and educators, Governing Body Members and RCL members, the primary focus is to consider why learners choose to adopt a culture of silence when they are faced by the very many issues of adolescence today.

Coming out of that conversation is an opportunity for participants to examine ways of creating suitable vehicles and environments that are conducive to allowing teenagers to speak out about these challenges and no longer keep them a secret.

  • School of Rugby Rankings – 6 May 2019

School of Rugby Rankings – 6 May 2019

SOR NuusGrey College of Bloemfontein kept their place on top of School of Rugby’s latest rankings after two clinical performances during the Wildeklawer tournament in Kimberley. The most important victory was the 47-33 over second-placed Paarl Gimnasium on Saturday.

There is not much to choose between Paarl Gimnasium and their arch-rivals, Paarl Boys’ High, which is in third place. Boishaai will travel to Bloemfontein this weekend which promises to deliver another epic schoolboy rugby clash.

Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch is still excluded from our rankings as they only played two matches against local opposition thus far. They will, however, be contenders after bagging their second Sanix-title on Sunday by giving St Peter’s College of Auckland a 52-5 drubbing in the final.

If there is one lesson we learned from this weekend’s schoolboy rugby is the fact that there is a huge gap between the top four South African schools’ sides, Grey College, Paul Roos Gimnasium, Paarl Boys’ High and Paarl Gimnasium, and the rest of the school teams this year.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.

These rankings are not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibility on reporting school rugby very seriously.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@rugby.supersportschools.com – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.

The team from Stellenbosch has also been crowned champions of this prestigious tournament in 2015 when they defeated Brisbane Boys’ College of Australia by 35-3 in the final.

It was fitting that Paul Roos was South Africa’s representative during this year’s 20th edition of the tournament as they were the first SA attendees back in 2000 during the inaugural tournament. Paul Roos then lost to King’s School of New Zealand by 5-28 in the final.

Flyhalf, Kade Wolhuter, scored 74 points during the tournament as Paul Roos swept all opposition aside. Wolhuter had now scored 112 points so far this season.

Paul Roos booked their place in the final with a 41-21 victory over Waverley College of Australia. In the quarterfinal, they smashed Exeter College from England by 75-0. St Peter’s College, current New Zealand schools’ champions, had to work hard to book their place in the final against the Japanese outfit of Toin Gakuen (17-13).

Grey College (2001), Boland Landbou (2002) and Glenwood (2008, 2016) is the other South African schools that have managed to be crowned champions of the Sanix tournament.

  • Stellenberg bo in opwindende stryd oor Diamonds

Petersen is Stellies se groot planmaker agterlangs.

Die toekenning as Speler van die Wedstryd het egter aan Stellenberg se vleuel, Jean-Jacques “Chappies” van Schalkwyk behoort.

  • Junior Springboks preparing for big Welsh battle

Junior Springboks preparing for big Welsh battle

JuniorSpringboksJunior Springbok coach Chean Roux said he was expecting another stern test in their second and final match on their warm-up tour to the UK against the Wales U20’s on Tuesday in what marks his last chance to test player combinations before finalising the World Rugby U20 Championship squad.

The match will be played at the Vale Resort outside Cardiff and kick-off is at 18h00 (SA time).

Roux made four changes and two positional switches to the side that ran on against England in Coventry on Friday, with fullback Andrew Kota, scrumhalf Sanele Nohamba, flanker Evan Roos and prop Kudzwai Dube earning starts.

Kota’s inclusion at No15 sees Thaakir Abrahams move to the right wing, while Marnus Potgieter switches from the wing to centre where he will join forces with Rikus Pretorius in the midfield.

Flanker Phendulani Buthelezi will lead the team, which features an expanded replacements bench featuring 10 players.

“We have tried to give everyone a chance to play on tour so that we can see where we are at this stage,” said Roux.

“There are another five or six players at home that we are also still looking at, so this is a good opportunity for everyone.”

Of Wales, the coach said: “They are a very good side from what we have seen in the U20 Six Nations and they are well-coached. They defeated England in the competition and could easily have finished second on the log.

“So this is going to be a good game and great test for the players, especially given the demanding schedule that we specifically planned for them on this tour.”

Commenting on what he wanted to see from his team in their final international friendly before the World Rugby U20 Championship in Argentina in June and said: “We would like to see how long the players can hang in the game. We trailed England by five points with eight minutes to go in our last game, and the outcome could have been very different.

“That said, we have tried to make this tour as tough as possible for the players. We flew to the UK on Tuesday, trained every day, didn’t give them off, and we have had double training sessions as well because we felt that it would not benefit them in Argentina to rest before these matches.

“So the main thing on this tour was to prepare them mentally for the World Rugby U20 Championship by making things as tough as possible.

“Hopefully we can beat Wales with players who have had a more physically-demanding schedule, but the main thing I would like to see how long the legs can last in this game.”

The Junior Springboks will face Scotland (4 June), Georgia (8 June) and New Zealand (12 June) in the pool stages of the World Rugby U20 Championship, with the team set to depart for Rosario exactly a month from today.

Roux will announce his 28-man World Rugby U20 Championship squad early in May.
