The LSEN Week (for learners with special educational needs) started back in 1981 as the Lemmer Week.

  • School of Rugby Rankings – 11 June 2018

School of Rugby Rankings – 11 June 2018

SORThis is our second last rankings before we take a short break for the national yout weeks.

In the coming week there is not a lot of games being played, so we don’t think there will be too much movement from this week’s School of Rugby Rankings. Helpmekaar travels to Pretoria to face Menlopark in the Virsekerbeker, while Monument has to travel to Boksburg and take on EG Jansen.

The real shake-ups in our rankings will only come in Super August with the clashes between Paul Roos and Grey College, Paarl Gimnasium and Paarl Boys’ High, Glenwood and Grey College and the play-offs of the Virsekerbeker will have a huge impact on the rankings.

Please note that we don’t take matches against international opposition into consideration in our rankings. These games will however still be recorded and shown in our results.

This rankings is not an official ranking as there is no official ranking on schoolboy level and this is only to get the discussion on school rugby on South Africa flowing. We however take our responsibilty on reporting school rugby very seriously.

To see each team’s results so far this season click on their name in the rankings. If you see any results missing please don’t hesitate to contact Hannes Nienaber via e-mail on hannes@schooolofrugby.co.za – and please feel free to discuss and differ from us in the comments section.

  • Garsies neem wraak teen Monument

  • Junior Boks want to take step forward in France

Junior Boks want to take step forward in France

JuniorSpringboksSA Rugby’s High Performance manager and Junior Springbok assistant coach Louis Koen says the team is keen to take a step forward in the World Rugby U20 Championship when they meet hosts, France, in their final pool match in Narbonne on Thursday.

The SA U20s are currently leading the standings in Pool C with 10 points following bonus-point victories against Georgia and Ireland, while France are in second place with nine points. Thursday’s match will serve as the decider to determine which team is guaranteed a place in the semi-finals.

The top team in each pool and the next best-placed team in the tournament at the conclusion of the pool stages will advance to the semi-finals.

“The players have been focusing on rest and recovery in the last two days, so the work begins again late this afternoon to prepare for the match against France – we’re all excited and keen for the challenge,” said Koen.

“They have been in this situation before, as we tried to replicate this tournament on our UK tour by playing three tough games in a very short space of time. So the players are well prepared, they are in the right frame of mind and are really excited to go out there and do the job.”

With the French playing in front of a passionate home crowd on Thursday, Koen said: “The fact that France are playing at home could be a positive or negative for them. They could either draw energy from their supporters in a full stadium, or it could place pressure on them.

“But our focus is on what we would like to achieve in the game. There are things we need to improve on and be better at, so we are focussing on the processes and plans that we would like to put in place, and we will approach things from whistle to whistle.”

Koen is satisfied that the Junior Springboks are on the right track in the competition after a solid second-half showing against Ireland: “The players have gained confidence from the fact that they can see the hard work they put in for the last five months in Stellenbosch is coming through in the last 20 to 30 minutes.

“We spoke a lot about how Test rugby works in the last two years, and sometimes you have to build an innings to get the results in the closing stages of a match. So the players are excited and they are looking forward to another opportunity to represent their country and to take a step forward in the competition.”

Meanwhile, No 8 Phendulani Buthelezi and flyhalf David Coetzer joined their team-mates in Gruissan on Tuesday, after being called up as injury replacements for Damian Willemse (knee) and Muller du Plessis (gluteal muscle) respectively.

Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux will announce his team to face France on Wednesday.

15 Richard Kriel (Grey), 14 Brandon-Lee Adams (Louis Botha), 13 Wyclef Vlitoor (Grey), 12 Franco Smith (Grey), 11 Ian Small-Smith (Grey), 10 Zander du Plessis (Grey), 9 Ross Braude (Grey), 8 Werner Gouws (Grey), 7 WJ Steenkamp (Grey), 6 Samkele Mzayiya (Louis Botha), 5 Danwich Beukes (Grey), 4 Ofentse Maphuti (Louis Botha), 3 Albert Annandale (Sentraal), 2 André-Hugo Venter (Grey), 1 Jan-Hendrik Wessels (Grey). Plaasvervangers: 16 Francois Boonzaaier (Louis Botha), 17 Lihle Lokwane (Louis Botha), 18 Herman Aggenbag (Grey), 19 Nhlanhla Senoamadi (Louis Botha), 20 De Wet Marais (Grey), 21 Delano Williams (Jim Fouché), 22 Jade Human (Grey), 23 Lehlonolo Lithabe (Louis Botha), 24 George Cronjé.

  • Twizza the new associate sponsor of South Africa’s leading schools 7’s series

TwizzaSouth Africa’s premier schools’ sevens series, the High School 7’s Series, has partnered with the country’s first official Proudly South African soft-drink, Twizza.

During last year’s series there were 108 different schools that participated with more than 1250 players taking part in the competition. Former Blitsbok and manager of the SA 7’s Academy, Marius Schoeman, attended a couple of last year’s tournaments. His own tournament the Marius Schoeman 7’s tournament at his alma mater, Paarl Gimnasium, formed part of the series.

There are 11 tournaments in the series with the highlight being the Champion of Champions tournament which will again be hosted by Camp Discovery just north of Pretoria. Paul Roos Gimnasium of Stellenbosch was crowned champions during last year’s inaugural series.

During the Champion of Champions tournament all the champions of the individual tournaments during the series as well as a few “wild card” teams will be invited.

The first tournament of this year’s series was hosted by Jim Fouché in Bloemfontein and was won by Grey College. Hoërskool Rustenburg and Glenwood High School of Durban will host the next tournaments on 17 and 18 August.

The tournament organiser is Darryl Weir. He is well-known in sevens circles and was also an integral part of the @lantic Sevens Series which played a major developing role in Blitsbokke like Branco du Preez, Hoffman Maritz, Cecil Afrika and Justin Geduld.

According to Weir, it is great to have a local partner like Twizza being a proudly South African brand, onboard.  With rugby 7s being a very successful and transformed sport, having a dynamic partnership is great to be able to further improve the brand of 7s rugby and provide as many young players as possible with the opportunity to play 7s rugby.

The High School 7’s Series tournaments:

    17 & 18 August – Hoërskool Rustenburg (u15 & u18)
    17 & 18 August – Glenwood (u15 & u18)

School of Rugby Rankings – 4 June 2018

Rugby FB iconEG Jansen produced the biggest surprise over the weekend by turning around a heavy 14-82 defeat against Transvalia into a 43-24 victory in five weeks. This was only Transvalia’s second defeat of the season. Jansies moved to just outside out Top 30 and if their recent run of form continue they will break into this part of the rankings.

This defeat meant that Transvalia dropped one spot to seventh with Oakdale Landbou moving up a position. The team from Riversdal also suffered a defeat on the weekend, but it was against our top ranked team, Paul Roos Gimnasium (42-21).

St Andrew’s College of Grahamstown moved into our Top 20 after beating Grey High School by 24-21.

  • Laeveld-leeutemmers verras byna
