CSA celebrate the stars of tomorrow

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today, hosted its annual CSA Breakfast Awards in association with KFC, where the stars of amateur cricket were honoured in a lavish ceremony at Inanda Club in Johannesburg. The Awards Breakfast commemorates the accomplishments of the steadfastly growing talent in the country as CSA continues to drive its vision of making cricket a truly national sport of winners.

Janneman Malan claimed double honours as he walked away with the Student Cricketer of the Year and the Sunfoil Three-Day Cup Cricketer of the Year awards for his outstanding efforts with the bat in hand.

Stacey Lackay’s star continued to rise this season. She received the CSA Women’s Provincial Cricketer of the Year accolade after her all-round performances helped Western Province win the CSA Women’s Week in March. Those same efforts earned her a Momentum Proteas debut against Bangladesh last month.

Coca-Cola South Africa under-19s star, Matthew Breetzke was named the Coca-Cola U19 Cricketer of the Year after an exceptional season with the bat. Sinethemba Qeshile returned the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week Player of the Tournament honours, while James Ritchie claimed Coca-Cola Schools T20 Cricketer of the Year.

After another exciting season of club cricket that showed the great talent that continues to prevail across the country, it was a pleasure for CSA to name Assupol Tuks’ Niel Brand as the Momentum National Club Championships Player of the Tournament and Bobbies Cricket Club’s Dewald Pretorius, the Multiply T20 Community Cup’s Cricketer of the Year.

The Regional Performance Centres and Hubs stationed across South Africa continue to produce young, budding talent. Some players have even earned selection for their respective provincial teams and took part in this season’s Momentum National Weeks. These success stories would not have been possible if it were not for the hard-working coaches and volunteers at these Centres. The Pitchvision RPC and Hubs Coach of the Year award this year went to Elridge Booysen for his work in the South Western Districts.

“Congratulations to all our award winners who keep the spirit of our amateur game so strong,” commented CSA Acting Chief Executive Thabang Moroe. “And a special word of congratulations to those who have had to overcome disabilities to be honoured here today.

“We can be very happy with the strength of our various development programmes that play a vital part in our talent identification pipeline. It is worth recording that Wiaan Mulder, Heinrich Klaasen and Lungi Ngidi were all award winners at last year’s breakfast function. Since then we have seen three of our under-19 youngsters honoured with inclusion in the ICC select XI chosen at the recent under-19 World Cup while Laura Wolvaardt has established herself as a star in our Momentum Proteas squad as a teenager.

“A special word of thanks also to all our sponsors and particularly KFC for their support of this function as well as the KFC Mini-Cricket Programme which is the best of its kind to be found anywhere in the world and is the launch pad for our young cricketers to live their dreams,” concluded Mr. Moroe

Tonight, the cricket family will gather at the Sandton Convention Centre, to pay tribute to the stars of professional cricket at the 2018 SA Cricket Awards Gala Dinner. The ceremony will be broadcast live on SuperSport 2 at 20:00 (SAST).

Fans will be able to follow all of the live action across CSA’s online social platforms www.facebook.com/cricketsouthafrica; www.twitter.com/officialcsa and Instagram (@cricket_south_africa), the official hash tag for the event is #CSAawards18.

  • Junior Boks can get the job done against Ireland

NewsGTyroneGreenThe Junior Springboks secured a 33-27 victory against Georgia in their opening game in Perpignan on Wednesday, and Green, who was one of the try-scorers in the match, echoed the coaches’ sentiments that they had to lift their game immensely.

“We didn’t start the tournament the way we wanted to,” said Green, who admitted it was a dream come true to represent the SA U20s at the World Rugby U20 Championship.

“We have two big games coming up (against Ireland and France in the pool stages), and we need to improve our performance drastically if we want to get through those games. We have all the ammunition to get the job done, but we need to produce a much better performance as a team.”

Despite the pressure, Green has taken a lot from his Junior Springbok journey, and said: “It has been exciting to be part of this squad. The World Rugby U20 Championship is a new experience for me and it is something I could not have imagined.

“I have always dreamed of being here and I have always pushed myself to get to this point. But it is now reality.”

Rugby may have played a big role in Green’s life from a young age, but he admits that he grew up in a passionate soccer home.

“My father played soccer as a youngster, so I grew up watching soccer, but we didn’t have it as sport when I was growing up, so I started playing rugby from the age of four years old,” said the former Jeppe Boys High pupil.

“Once I started playing, however, I loved it and I haven’t looked back. Rugby has been good to me and it has given me something to continue working towards.”
Green admitted that it took hard work over several years to reach this point, and said: “My work ethic is something I’ve prided myself on because I feel the harder one works the more you can achieve.”

Of the opportunity to work with Junior Springbok coach Chean Roux, Louis Koen, who is SA Rugby’s High Performance Manager and an assistant coach, and Bafana Nhleko, who he works with directly at the Golden Lions Rugby Union, the BA student said: “It has been a great experience working with this coaching team.

As players we learn from them every day, and the mind-set on how they approach the game is fantastic.”

Roux will announce his team to face Ireland on Saturday.

  • The 17 uncapped players in the Springbok-squad and the schools they attended

NewsGKwaggaSmithSpringbok coach, Rassie Erasmus, named 17 uncapped players in his first Bok squad of 43 players that for the June tests against Wales and England. Interesting fact is that only five of the uncapped players in the group represented the South African Schools’ side earlier in their career.

The five players is Thomas du Toit (2013), Ox Nche (2012/13), Sikhumbuzo Notshe (2010/11), RG Snyman (2013) and Embrose Papier (2014/15). This shows that maybe the SA Schools’ program is of less importance than it is made out to be. Maybe the current system in use should be re-looked. The SA Schools’ program is doing some good work, but maybe it should be emphasised less if this conversion rate is taken into consideration.

A once-off match for the SA Schools’ team as showcase match might be sufficient to give recognition to players who performed well during the Coca-Cola Craven Week. But to criticise or change the system is not the purpose of this article, its rather to give recognition to the schools that played a role in forming these players.

The conversion rate of players who represented the Junior Springboks seems higher. Only five of the 17 didn’t play for the national u20-side. One of them Notshe did play SA Schools. The other four Akker van der Merwe (Outeniqua), Aphiwe Dyantyi (Dale College), Makazolo Mapimpi (Jim Mvabaza) and Cameron Wright (Hilton College) careers took a bit longer to develop.

The 17 uncapped players will only be recognised as Springboks if they take the field during one of the four test matches during June. The Springboks face Wales in a once-off test match in the United States of America, before facing England in a three-test Castle Lager Incoming Series at home.

A player like Kwagga Smith (HTS Middelburg) who is one of the uncapped players, was without a doubt the best flanker during the Coca-Cola Craven Week of 2011 in Kimberley. He was however overlooked for SA Schools’ selection due to the strict selection policies that were in place which dictated the size which a flanker needed to be to gain selection. Smith however overcame this setback and could make his test debut in June.

Another player who was unlucky not to make the SA Schools’ side is winger S’busiso Nkosi who was one of the standout players during the Coca-Cola Craven Week of 2014 in Middelburg, Mpumalanga. Interesting is that he is a home-grown talent from Barberton in the same province, but moved to Jeppe High School as a 17-year old to represent the Golden Lions during this prestigious tournament.

The highest accolade achieved by Bulls lock Jason Jenkins while a schoolboy at St Alban’s College in Pretoria was representing the Lynx at the annual VKB Week in the sleepy Free State town of Reitz.

Lions winger Aphiwe Dyantyi last representative rugby before breaking through to the Golden Lions u21-side was for Border u13 at the Coca-Cola Craven Week for Primary Schools. Dyantyi got his chance after making the University of Johannesburg’s team for the FNB Varsity Cup in 2015 before going on to make the provincial u21-side later that same year.

  • Willemse starts in settled SA u20 team for Georgia clash

Willemse starts in settled SA u20 team for Georgia clash

JuniorSpringboksJunior Springbok flyhalf Damian Willemse will make his first appearance of the season for the SA U20’s in a settled starting team when Chean Roux’s charges meet Georgia in their opening match of the World Rugby U20 Championship at Stade Aimé Giral in Perpignan on Wednesday.

Willemse, one of seven players in the match-day squad who participated in the tournament in Georgia last year, will partner with Zak Burger at halfback after coming off a solid Vodacom Super Rugby campaign for the DHL Stormers in the last few months.

Lock and captain Salmaan Moerat, centre Wandisile Simelane, No 8 Muller Uys, fullback Gianni Lombard, hooker Daniel Jooste and replacement scrumhalf Rewan Kruger are the other players in Roux’s match-23 who featured in the international spectacle in Tbilisi.

Moerat and Ruan Nortje will form the lock duo, while flankers Dian Schoonees and PJ Steenkamp pair up with Uys in the loose trio, and Rikus Pretorius and Simelane will do duty in the midfield.

Lombard starts at fullback, with Tyrone Green and Sihle Njezula at wing, while Jooste and props Sazi Sandi and Nathan McBeth will pack down in the front row.

On the bench, replacement lock Ruan Nortje will make his Junior Springbok debut if he takes to the field after missing the team’s internationals in the lead-up to the tournament due to a knee injury.

“We were fortunate to be able to select a settled squad, which will be handy against a physical and passionate Georgian outfit,” said Roux.

“All the players are fit and eager to play, and we selected a team that we thought would be best suited to the game against Georgia.”

Looking ahead at the clash against Georgia, Roux said he is expecting a physical onslaught: “Georgia play with their hearts on their sleeves and they will take to the field with everything they have. They are a forward-driven team, with a good scrum and lineout maul, so they will probably try to lay the foundation there. But that said, our plans for the game are mapped out and hopefully we can counter that.”

The match kicks off at 18h30 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport 1.
