Kaplan sal fluitjie is Virsekerbeker-eindstryd vat

JonathanKaplan Een van die mees ervare skeidsregters ooit op toetsvlak, Jonathan Kaplan, sal Saterdag die fluitjie blaas in die eindstryd van die Virsekerbeker vir Makroskole op die Hoërskool Nelspruit se veld in Mbombela. Die Nelspruit Rhinos kom Saterdag om 13:00 teen Monument van Krugersdorp in die eindstryd te staan.

Kaplan het met sy aftrede as internasionale skeidsregster die rekord vir die meeste toetse (70) as skeidsregter gehou. Die eindstryd sal sy 210de skolewedstryd op eerstespanvlak in beheer wees. Hy het sy loopbaan as skeidsregter in die middel tagtigerjare by die Transvaalse Skeidsregtersvereniging begin. Sy eerste skolewedstryd op eerstespanvlak was in 1985 in sy eerste jaar na skool toe ‘n skeidsregter nie vir sy alma mater, King David’s Linksfield teen Greenside. Die span van Greenside het ‘n toekomstige Springbok-vleuel James Small in sy geledere gehad.

Van die groter skolewedstryde waarin Kaplan geblaas het tel die oudste interskole noord van die Vaalrivier tussen King Edward VII en Jeppe High School for Boys’ (1992, 2014), die grootste interskole ter wereld tussen Paarl Gimnasium en die Hoër Jongenskool Paarl (2001, 2008, 2013), Michaelhouse teen Hilton College (2001), Afrikaans Hoër Seunskool van Pretoria teen Pretoria Boys’ High (2009), Boland Landbou teen Oakdale Landbou (2012), Wynberg Boys’ High teen SACS (2007, 2011, 2012), Bishops teen Rondebosch Boys’ High (2003, 2005, 2007, 2010).

Hy was ses keer in beheer van die Curriebeker-eindstryd, drie keer SuperRugby se eindstryd en het ook tydens drie Wereldbekers as skeidsregter opgetree.

Die laaste keer wat ‘n internasionale skeidsregter in beheer van die kompetisie se eindstryd was, was in 2011 toe Mark Lawrence die fluitjie vir die kragmeting tussen Waterkloof en Florida geblaas het. Klofies het die wedstryd destyds met 41-21 gewen. Andre Watson het ook van 1995 tot 2000 elke jaar die Beeldtrofee se eindstryd hanteer.

Die Virsekerbeker is die oudste skolerugbykompetisie in Suid-Afrika en het voorheen ook as die Administrateursbeker (1922-1981), Direkteurstrofee (1982-1994) en Beeldtrofee (1995-2015) bekend gestaan.

Dis Nelspruit teen Monnas in Virsekerbeker-eindstryd

NewsGJoaChristovam Dit sal Saterdag in Mbombela die Hoërskool Nelspruit teen Monument van Krugersdorp in die eindstryd van die Virsekerbeker vir Makroskole wees. Daar sal ook vir die eerste keer in twee jaar ‘n nuwe kampioen gekroon word na die Hoërskool Garsfontein die afgelope twee jaar as kampioen gekroon was.

Nelspruit se Rhinos het Centurion se opmars met ‘n klinkende sege van 45-7 Dinsdag in die halfeindronde van die reeks gestuit. Die Rhinos het teen die omdraaislag reeds ‘n voorsprong van 18-7 geniet.

Die wenspan se SA Skole-losskakel, Stephan van der Bank, het 15 van sy span se punte met sy geleerde skopstewel aangeteken.

Interessant is die feit dat Van der Bank se pa, Aubrey, in 1989 se eindstryd vir Nelspruit op skrumskakel uitgedraf het. Nelspruit het in die eindstryd van die Direkteurstrofee met 13-8 teen Kempton Park verloor.

Centurion het goed begin en eerste bloed geruik toe sy heelagter, Kevin Osborne, die doellyn oorgesteek het. Sy drie is deur die losskakel, Eathan Wentzel, verdoel.

Nelspruit het laas in 2014 die kroon as kampioen gedra en dit was ook die span se laaste verskyning in die eindstryd.

In Pretoria op Berepark het Monument vir die eerste keer sedert 2012 sy plek in die eindstryd bespreek. Monnas het Garsfontein met 31-24 geklop.

Monnas se hoofafrigter, Tjaart van der Walt, dring hiermee ook na sy vierde agtereenvolgende eindstryd deur na hy die vorige drie seisoene vir Garsfontein tot die eindstryd gehelp brei het.

Die verskil tussen die twee spanne was die feit dat die span van Krugersdorp oor veel meer diepte op sy plaasvervangersbank beskik het. Sy SA Skole-haker, Morné Brandon, was skaars op die veld voor hy die doellyn oorgesteek het. Dit was egter die plaasvervanger-loskopstut, Tumi Manonyane, wat met sy skrumwerk die verskil tussen die twee spanne was. Hy het boonop nie net drie belangrike strafskoppe met sy skrumwerk afgedwing nie, maar ook die drie gedruk wat aan sy span vir die eerste keer in die wedstryd die voortou gegee het.

Monnas se agtsteman, PJ Jacobs, het hard gewerk voorlangs, terwyl die flank Franco Schutte ‘n paar goeie lopies ingekry het wanneer die spel losgetorring het.

Garsfontein se agttal het in die eerste helfte onder sy eweknie ingeklim, terwyl die losskakel, Barry Schoombee, in die moeilike winderige omstandighede gewys het dat hy oor ‘n uitmuntende skopskoen beskik.

Garsies se kaptein en agtsteman, Jordan van Dyk, asook die haker, Stephan Billings, het voorlangs vir Monnas besig gehou. Garsfontein het as span uitstekend verdedig en daar was min deurkom kans vir die besoekers.

Die Garsie Bere se beste speler op die dag was sonder twyfel sy SA Skole-senter, Diego Appollis, wat agterlangs ‘n paar spelers van Monnas versigtig op die aanval gehad het.

Rustenburg kampioen van Sewesreeks op tuisveld

Rustenburg 1 Hoërskool Rustenburg se sewes-rugbyspan het Waterkloof van Pretoria in die doodsnikke van die eindstryd van die Rustenburg-been van die Hoërskole Sewesreeks met 24-19 verslaan. Die gasheer het vinnig ‘n voorsprong van 19-0 opgebou, waarna Klofies terug geveg het om met 21-19 voor te loop.

Rustenburg het met speeltyd reeds verstreke sy hand op die trofee gekry deur die wendrie te druk. Rustenburg kwalifiseer hiermee om later vanjaar aan die Kampioen van Kampioene-toernooi deel te neem.

Rustenburg het sy plek in die eindstryd met ‘n klinkende sege van 29-5 oor Noordheuwel van Krugersdorp bespreek. Dit was die span van Krugersdorp se enigste nederlaag tydens die toernooi. Nories se Devan de Bruin en Renier Stander het deurgans uitstaande spel tydens die toernooi gelewer.

Waterkloof moes ietwat harder werk vir sy plek in die eindstryd. Hy het Lichtenburg met 15-5 in die ander halfeindstryd verslaan. Klofies moes ook in sy groepwedstryd teen Kempton Park hard werk vir ‘n oorwinning van 12-10.

Hoërskool Alberton het in die Plaat-afdeling koning gekraai. Hy het vir Wesvalia van Klerksdorp met 31-5 in die eindstryd die loef afgesteek.

In die o.15-afdeling kon niemand kers met Hoërskool Rustenburg vashou nie. Die tuisspan het Kempton Park met 34-14 oortuigend in die eindstryd verslaan. Rustenburg het wel met 12-10 teen die Hoërskool Middelburg in die halfeindstryd deurgeskuur. Kempies het hulle plek in die eindstryd met ‘n sege van 24-14 oor Die Anker bespreek.

Grey College on top against Paul Roos after gutsy performance

NewsGWihanMarais Grey College managed to hang-on for a narrow 30-28 victory over Paul Roos Gimnasium in their annual Premier Interschools Saturday at the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The visitors from Bloemfontein had to defend the narrow two-point lead with only 14 men on the pitch during the last seven minutes of the clash after their fullback, David Kriel, was sinbinned for a spear tackle. The 14-men of Grey College showed a lot of guts to keep Paul Roos from snatching victory from them.

Paul Roos had a dream start to the Premier Interschool with hooker, JJ Kotzé, and flyhalf, Juan Mostert, scoring tries in the first five minutes of the match both of which was converted by fullback, Colia Louis, to give their side a 14-0 lead.

Grey College opened their account in the tenth minute thanks to a penalty goal by flyhalf, Zander du Plessis. A few minutes later Du Plessis doubled his team’s score with another penalty.

Prop Naudé Naudé crashed over for the visitors’ first try which was also converted by Du Plessis. Grey increased the tempo of the match to take control. Paul Roos’ lead was down to a single point at 14-13 at this stage.

Louis, who had his kicking boots on then extended his side’s lead to 17-13 with his first of three penalty goals. He only missed one attempt at goal during the match.

Grey College took the lead for the first time in the match when winger Pienaar van Niekerk scored in the 26th minute of the match. Du Plessis was successful with the conversion to give Grey a 20-17 lead.

Grey College’s hooker, Wihan Marais, scored his side third try which was also converted by Du Plessis to give his side a 27-17 lead at the break.

Grey College’s forwards with their captain and flanker, Marcel Theunissen, leading the way defended as if their lives depended on it. Lock Johan Wilken made a try-saving tackle on Paul Roos’ winger Remy Engelbrecht late in the match.

Paul Roos’ hooker and Man-of-the-Match, JJ Kotzé, gave his side hope with his second try to bring the deficit down to only two points at 30-28. Kriel was yellow carded shortly after that, but Grey managed to pull through winning by 30-28 thanks to some gutsy defence.

SA Schools disappoint in u19 Series finale

NewsGBabyBoks SA Schools coach Lance Sendin attributed his team’s 52-22 defeat against England at City Park Stadium in Cape Town on Saturday to missed opportunities and lapses in concentration on defence. The defeat left the team winless in the U19 International Series.

Errors at crucial times, missed tackles and the inability to capitalise on their point-scoring chances – which let the team down in their matches against Wales and France – continued to haunt the SA Schools team, despite a call by Sendin on Friday for a vastly improved showing from his charges.

“We didn’t play the way we wanted to in the first half and we missed three opportunities to score,” said Sendin.

“We bounced back in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but we let it slip again. So in essence bad defence and our inability to use a number of chances cost us again.”

Sendin, however, hoped that the players would use the lessons learned during the tournament in future and said: “We played against teams that were settled outfits who have played together and against one another in the past, and it is important that players learn from this tournament as they progress through the ranks.

“Some of the players in the squad are still under 17 so they will be back next year, and they will know what to expect.”
In a disappointing first-half for the hosts, flyhalf Stephan der Bank missed two penalty goals in the first five minutes, while a knock-on close to the tryline and a subsequent lost ball on the tryline left the team scoreless at the break for the second match in a row.

In turn England ran hard on attack throughout the half and broke through tackles easily, while they did well to force their way over the advantage line almost every time they carried the ball up-field, which earned them three first-half tries compliments of fullback Ollie Hassell-Collins, lock Josh Basham and captain and No 8 Sam Moore respectively.

This handed them an encouraging 19-0 lead at the break.

The SA Schools team fought back strongly early in the second half with back-to-back tries by winger Muller du Plessis and flanker Henco Martins respectively followed by a penalty goal by Qamani Kota, which reduced the deficit to 19-15 with 26 minutes to play.

England, however, hit back with two tries in two minutes by forwards Nic Rigby and Tom Willis and three more as the half progressed thanks to Caden Murley, Sam Spink and Nick David to take their tally for the match to eight.

The SA Schools team, meanwhile, were only able to add one more try to their tally with Du Plessis receiving the ball in space and racing to the tryline.

In the other match, France defeated Wales 31-19.

Kaptein Botha gee kanker ‘n opstopper

NewsGLianBotha Dit moes iemand spesiaal verg om die Hoërskool Centurion vir die eerste keer tot die halfeindronde van die Virsekerbeker (voorheen Beeldtrofee, Direkteurstrofee en Administrateursbeker) te lei.

En in sy kaptein en flank, Lian Botha, het dié skool ‘n gepaste vegter gekry wat vanjaar se eerstespan se veggees uitstraal. Botha is drie jaar gelede met limfklier kanker gediagnoseer, maar het vanjaar reeds genoegsaam herstel om in die 400m-hekkies op die B-bond Interhoër-atletiekbyeenkoms goud te verower en natuurlik sy skool se eersterugbyspan tot nuwe hoogtes te lei. Hy het die hekkies in ‘n tyd van 54.9 sekondes gewen.

Die skool het wel voorheen as Lyttelyon en Verwoerdburg gemengde sukses in die oudste skolerugbykompetisie in Suid-Afrika behaal.

Botha was vir sy skool se o.16-span in aksie toe hy die veld rustyd moes verlaat na hy gesukkel het om te sien. “Ek het baie gesukkel om gewig op te tel en ook baie gejeuk. Ek het gedink dis oor ek so aktief met my atletiek ook was dat ek nie gewig kon aansit nie. Ons het vermoed dat ek harsingskudding opgedoen het in die wedstryd en het my huisdokter besoek,” het Botha gesê.

“My hele nek was egter opgeswel en ek moes ‘n noodskandering ondergaan. Dit het gewys dat ek groeisels in my bors het. Daar is ‘n biopsie geneem en ook een van my limfkliere is uitgehaal. Ek is sedert verlede jaar se begin skoon na so ses maande se chemo-behandeling.”

Botha is ‘n uitstekende leier wat sy skool se o.14-, o.15- en o.16-rugbyspan ook aangevoer het. Hy is ook die Woeries se onderhoofseun.

“Ek het geen twyfel gehad dat ek gesond sou word nie. My ouers, die skool en al sy leerlinge asook my vriende het my deur dit gehelp. My vriende het regtig moeite gedoen om my te help. Hulle het sommer eenkeer skool gebank om my by die Unitas-hospitaal oorkant die skool te kom besoek,”

Botha wil graag volgende jaar in Potchefstroom studeer en hy oorweeg Bourekeningkunde as rigting. Hy wil ook graag rugby vir die Pukke speel.

Centurion het vanjaar tot die Virsekerbeker deurgedring na hy bo-aan die puntelys van die Blou Bulle se Makroskole B-afdeling geëindig het. Die span het boonop vir Eldoraigne, wat die vroeë gunsteling was om in die afdeling van die Ligbloues sake te oorheers, oortuigend met 30-3 die onderspit laat delf.

Eldos het vanjaar se gunsteling om die streekkompetisie se wen, Monument van Krugersdorp met 27-22 geklop.

Centurion kom Dinsdag in Mbombela teen die Hoërskool Nelspruit in die halfeindronde van die Virsekerbeker te staan. Die Woeries sal nie die gunsteling wees om die wedstryd te wen nie, maar die Nelspruit Rhinos moet weet dat hulle ‘n stryd tot die einde te wagte kan wees.

“Dit is baie lekker vir ons as span en dit is die grootste wedstryd van ons lewens. Elke week wat ons wen in die kompetisie is dit ‘n hoogtepunt vir ons skool. Ek dink ons hou van die druk en verwagtinge op ons skouers,” het Botha gesê.

Grey trek gutsy-sege deur en die Kwaggas steeds Gim se baas is

NewsGDavidCary DIT het hope Grey-guts saam met rotsvaste en desperate verdediging gevat vir Grey-kollege om met ‘n sege van 30-28 oor Paul Roos Gimnasium in die Markotter-stadion in Stellenbosch na Bloemfontein terug te keer.

Paul Roos het uit die wegspringblokke soos ‘n wafferse naelloper gespring en na slegs vyf minute se spel in die wedstryd ‘n voorsprong van 14-0 opgebou.

Grey het teruggeveg met baie durf en ook deur die tempo van die wedstryd te lig. Die besoekers van die Rosestad se flank en kaptein, Marcel Theunissen, het veral sy lyf op die spel vir die wenspan gesit.

Grey moes sonder sy drie SA Skole-spelers Rikus Pretorius (senter), Christopher Schreuder (losskakel) en Varkie Greyling (haker) klaarkom.

Grey moes boonop die laaste sewe minute van die wedstryd sonder sy heelagter, David Kriel, klaarkom. Kriel is na ‘n boorvat met ‘n geelkaart koelkas toe gestuur. Paul Roos kon egter nie in die laaste sewe minute daarin slaag om sy agterstand van twee punte in ‘n sege te omskep nie.

Paul Roos se heelagter, Colia Louis, was met sy skopskoen vir sy span goud werd. Hy het slegs een stelskop, die doelskop van die haker, JJ Kotze, se tweede drie skeef gekorrel.

Die tuisspan se skrumskakel, Gerado Jaars, het self vir Grey aan die raai om die losskrums en gemale gehou. Voorlangs was Kotze sy span se beste speler.

Voorlangs verdien die plaasvervanger-voorryman, Luke Janse van Vuuren, ook ‘n pluimpie vir sy woelige spel. Agterlangs het die plaasvervanger-vleuel, Wycliff Vlitoor, asook die losskakel, Zander du Plessis goed vir Grey vertoon.

Indien daar enige twyfel was, die Kwaggas van Outeniqua het hulle skop terug en het waarskynlik die hardste gister geskop deur Paarl Gimnasium met 27-24 in George te verslaan.

Die Kwaggas het na hulle gesukkel het aan die begin van die seisoen, teruggeveg om in sy laaste ses wedstryde seges te behaal. Outeniqua is tradisioneel die span waarteen Gimmies die meeste sukkel.

Outeniqua het op sy tuisveld teen rustyd ‘n voorsprong van 21-14 opgebou met sy losskakel, James Mollentze, wat in die tweede helfte met twee strafdoele geslaag het om die sege vir sy span te beklink.

Die Kwaggas se ingesteldheid was van die begin af reg vir die heelwat groter agttal wat teen hom te staan gekom het. Elke speler in die span verdien ‘n klop op die skouer vir hoe elkeen sy lyf op die spel op verdediging geplaas het.

Die twee “groot” wedstryde van die naweek se Virsekerbeker vind eers Dinsdag plaas, met drie van die vier skole wat spelers aan die SA Skole-span moes afstaan.

Centurion sal na Mbombela vir ‘n ontmoeting met die Hoërskool Nelspruit se Rhinos in die halfeindronde reis, terwyl Monument en Garsfontein mekaar vir die derde agtereenvolgende jaar in die ander halfeindstryd sal pak.

In die afdeling vir Grootskole was daar geen verrassings nie met die verdedigende kampioen, Helpmekaar-kollege, wat op sy tuisveld sy titel teen Transvalia van Vanderbiljpark sal verdedig. Helpies het met 55-23 oor te veel skietgoed vir Oos-Moot beskik, terwyl Transvalia net voor en na rustyd vir Potchefstroom Gimnasium met skitterspel lamgelê het. Transvalia was met 39-14 baas.

In die Mediumskole-eindstryd sal Brandwag van Benoni teen Hoogenhout van Bethel te staan kom. Die Pumas se skitterende Cravenweek-vleuel Prince Nkabinde draf vir Hoogenhout uit.

In die Kovsiestreek-kompetisie se Shimla-liga het Kimberley se se twee kragte, Diamantveld en Noord-Kaap, ‘n tweede afspraak met mekaar vir die seisoen gemaak. Die wenner van die uitspeelwedstryd tussen die twee spanne sal teen die verdedigende kampioen, Grey-kollege, te staan kom.

Diamantveld het die Vrystaatse A-liga kampioen, Louis Botha, met 35-12 verslaan. Diamonds moes sonder sy generaal, Charles Williams, klaarkom.

In Welkom het Noord-Kaap die Griffons se kampioen, die Afrikaanse Hoërskool Kroonstad, met 36-26 geklop.

Soos elke jaar sedert die ontstaan van die kompetisie in 2007 sal die Irawa-liga se eindstryd vir die meeste opwinding sorg. Riebeeckstad sal in die eindstryd teen die Hoërskool Kalahari van Kuruman se Leeus in ‘n stryd om die titel gewikkel wees.

Riebies het Hartswater met 37-14 in die halfeindronde geklop, terwyl Kalahari in die ander halfeindstryd ook redelik gemaklik met die Vrystaatse B-liga kampioen, St Andrew, afgereken het.

Stellenberg het welverdiend sy seisoen op ‘n hoë not afgesluit deur Tygerberg met 90-26 af te ransel. Stellenberg het 14 drieë gedruk. Sy buitesenter, Leeuwner van der Merwe, het twee hiervan gedruk en ook met sewe doelskoppe vir ‘n persoonlike bydrae van 24 punte geslaag.

Oakdale Landbou het op sy tuisveld net buite Riversdal ook ‘n belangrike sege van 24-17 oor Framesby van Port Elizabeth behaal. In ‘n opwindende stryd in die Baai het Grey High School sy seisoen op ‘n hoë noot met ‘n sege van 57-22 oor Selborne College afgesluit.

Sendin calls for big improvement in U19 Series finale

SA Schools coach Lance Sendin on Friday called for a big improvement from his team in their final Under 19 International Series match against England at City Park Stadium in Crawford on Saturday as they look to finish the tournament with a win.

The SA Schools team went down against Wales and France in their first two matches, while England come off a 14-12 defeat against Wales, so both sides will be determined to bounce back strongly.

Sendin, however, stressed the importance of an improved performance on attack especially ahead of Saturday’s match, which will bring down the curtain on the annual U19 tournament.

“The emphasis in camp since Wednesday has been to learn from our mistakes and to prepare as well as possible for the clash against England,” said Sendin.

“There was an improvement in our defence against France, and we need to build on that on Saturday, but we also need to capitalise on our point-scoring chances, as that has been lacking in our game.

“We obviously worked on all the facets of our game at training in the last few days, but there was a big focus on our attack and game management in particular.

“As a team we need to take a collective responsibility for our performance and decisions on the field. The onus is on us to correct things this week.”

Sendin made four changes to his starting team for Saturday’s clash. Kick-off is at 14h00, while France will face Wales at 12h15. Both matches will be broadcast live on SuperSport 5.
