NewsGValke16Western Province will make its comeback after a two year absence to the main match of this year’s Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week in Bloemfontein.

Western Province, SWD, the Free State XV, Boland and KZN on Wednesday registered vital victories in the second round of the U16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo Week in Bloemfontein to stake a claim for a place in the final match of the tournament on Friday.

Western Province defeated the Free State 37-22, while SWD beat Border 32-27, the Free State XV outplayed the Pumas 48-24, Boland pipped the Limpopo Blue Bulls 25-22 and KZN beat Namibia 46-13 in matches played at Grey College. These results ensured that they were the only unbeaten sides in the tournament going into Friday’s final round.

Western Province got their clash against the Free State off to a strong start thanks to a well-balanced effort between their forwards and backs, which saw them build up an encouraging 27-7 lead in the second half.

The Free State fought back with intent as the clock wound down and the rewards followed as they scored two tries to close the gap on the scoreboard to eight points. They continued to show their fighting spirit in the dying minutes, but they were denied by the defence, while the Cape side sealed the 37-19 victory with a late try and subsequent penalty goal.

SWD survived a determined fight-back from Border in the dying minutes thanks to their solid defence to secure a 32-27 victory. The match was particularly memorable for SWD flyhalf Jaylen James who scored two of the team’s four tries and kicked three conversions and two penalty goals for a personal tally of 22 points. Border, meanwhile, scored four tries – two of which were earned in the second half – but their efforts proved to be too little too late.

The Free State XV’s impressive attacking skills and ability to convert their chances into points handed them the edge against the Pumas as they powered their way to a 48-24 win. The home team’s centre Joubert Schoeman and winger Otshepehile Lentsa were standout performers as they contributed three and two tries respectively to the team’s tally of seven. The Pumas earned four tries for their efforts, but their porous defence cost them dearly.

Boland’s accurate goal-kicking proved to be the difference on the scoreboard in their 25-22 win over with the Limpopo Blue Bulls, as the side was outscored four tries to three. Boland flyhalf Nathan Engelbrecht slotted over two penalty goals and two conversions, while the Limpopo side only converted one of their tries.

KZN, meanwhile, overcame a strong challenge early on from Namibia in their clash to register an impressive 46-13 victory, with the side crossing the tryline six times thanks to their effective attack. Namibia scored their first try early in the match and added a penalty goal before the break, but the Durban side’s strong defence limited them to only one more try in the match.

In another nail-biting encounter, a last-gasp try by the Golden Lions, after sustained pressure against the Blue Bulls in the dying minutes of their clash, left the teams level on 29-29. The unsuccessful conversion and a subsequent wayward penalty kick, left the teams settling for the draw. The match was thrilling as the teams were neck on neck throughout, with the Blue Bulls taking a narrow 19-17 lead at the break. The Lions outscored them five tries to four, but the Blue Bulls’ accurate kicking assisted their cause.

Earlier in the day, three penalty goals and a conversion by Eastern Province flyhalf Juandre Liebenberg allowed his team to claim a narrow 26-24 victory against the Griquas in a tight match, despite the Kimberley side outscoring them four tries to three. Griquas winger Jacquin Van Wyk scored three of his team’s tries, but this was not enough to steer them to victory.

The clash between the Western Province XV and the Griffons was gripping as both teams ran hard on attack and produced a solid defensive effort, which saw the match being decided on goal kicks. Each of the sides scored two tries, but four penalty goals and a conversion by the Cape side’s flyhalf Kade Wolhuter to two successful conversions and two penalty goals by the Griffons earned Western Province XV the 24-20 victory.

The Leopards and Valke were involved in a physical encounter as both teams tried to use their big forwards to gain ascendancy. The Valke, however, made the most of their try-scoring chances, with No 8 Franco Enslin earning a hat-trick to add to another try, while they limited the Leopards to only two tries for a 28-10 victory.

Zimbabwe dominated their clash against Border CD completely and they ran riot on attack as they snuck through the gaps in the defence at will. This performance earned the African side a 34-0 lead at the break, while they increased their try tally to nine in the second half for a comprehensive 49-0 victory.

The U16 teams will have Thursday off, while the U13 Coca-Cola Craven Week teams will return to the field for their penultimate round of matches. One of the main games of the day will be the Test match between Zimbabwe and Namibia.

  • Victor Matfield called up to scout Coca-Cola Craven Week Heroes

Victor Matfield called up to scout Coca-Cola Craven Week Heroes

Coca Cola Craven WeekSpringbok legend and rugby pundit, Victor Matfield, has been announced as the face of the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day at South Africa’s primary youth rugby tournament, the Coca-Cola u18 Craven Week. Matfield, who is the most capped Springbok, has been tasked to lead a panel of experts in selecting the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day recipients at the Coca-Cola Craven Week, which will take place at St Stithians College in Johannesburg from 17-22 July 2017.

“Being chosen to be part of the Coca-Cola Craven Week really takes me back to when I played in the tournament back in 1994 and 1995. For me, Craven Week was a stepping stone in my rugby career and I want to thank Coca-Cola and SARU for organising tournaments like these to identify talent from a young age. I look forward to playing a part in the tournament and bringing some of my experience and expertise to what I believe will be an action-packed week,” Matfield commented.

Matfield, alongside Coca-Cola’s appointed panel of rugby specialists, will on each day of the Coca-Cola u18 Craven Week be tasked with identifying and recognising a standout player that embodies the qualities of a hero, the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day.

The Coca-Cola Hero of the Day is not necessarily the best player on the field. He is the flank that made three successive tackles and forced the turnover; the scrumhalf that took a quick tap and dived over for the match-winning try; or the centre that made a courageous try-saving tackle.

Fetsi Mbele, Senior Communications Manager: Assets and Brand Experience, Coca-Cola South Africa, said “Coca-Cola has been a proud sponsor of the Coca-Cola Youth Weeks for the last 32 years. The Coca-Cola Craven Week is a platform for identifying the top school rugby players in the country – this is where South Africa’s future heroes are made.

We are thus delighted to have one of the most decorated heroes in world rugby, Victor Matfield, come on board to lead our Coca-Cola Hero of the Day campaign, as we continue the development of youth rugby in South Africa. We look forward to an exciting partnership with Victor and believe that with his help, we will continue to unearth the future Springboks.”

    Results – u13 Coca-Cola Craven Week – Day 2

NewsGMarcusGordonOnly four of the 18 teams participating in the U13 Coca-Cola Craven Week at Grey College in Bloemfontein remained unbeaten at the end of the second day’s play on Tuesday as the tournament switched into a different gear.

Nine teams entered the day’s play with round-one wins in the bag, but Eastern Province, the Golden Lions, Western Province and the Blue Bulls were the only unbeaten teams by the end of the round.

Eastern Province registered a narrow 17-14 victory against KZN, while the Golden Lions forced their way to a 18-12 victory against Border, Western Province defeated the Limpopo Blue Bulls 41-10 and the Blue Bulls beat SWD 22-0 in another entertaining day of rugby.

The clash between Eastern Province and KZN was nail-biting as the teams fought until the end, with the Eastern Cape outfit just pipping their Durban counterparts. Eastern Province outscored KZN three tries to two in what was a tight tussle from the outset, but it was EP’s defence that stood out as they shut out the determined KZN team close to their tryline on several occasions in the dying minutes.

The Golden Lions produced an effective performance to build up a 15-0 halftime lead against Border. But the Eastern Cape side fought back strongly in the second half and scored two tries compliments of Litelihle Bester, one which was converted. A second-half penalty goal by the Lions, however, saw them secure an 18-12 victory.

Western Province, meanwhile, overcame a strong challenge from the Limpopo Blue Bulls in a physical encounter to register a 41-10 victory. The Cape side was particularly strong at taking advantage of the opposition’s mistakes and using their fantastic support play to sneak their way through the gaps and around the defence. This earned them a rewarding seven tries, while they limited the Limpopo side to two.

The Blue Bulls literally powered their way to a 22-0 Victory against SWD as the team played to their strengths by using their bigger players to force their way through the defence, which they backed up with good support play. SWD tried hard to force their way into the Blue Bulls half throughout the match, but the Pretoria side’s solid defence combined with their ability to win turnovers denied the George side from scoring a single point for their efforts.

Earlier, Namibia ran circles around Border CD on attack. Their forwards laid a solid foundation upfront and their backs ran hard on attack and snuffed out the gaps in the defence. This effective display earned them a staggering 14 tries, with centre Jurenzo Julius and Louw Rossouw each scoring a hat-trick, which they also converted, to guide the team to a 92-12 victory.

The Griffons dominated their clash against the Pumas from the outset and they did well to force their way over the advantage line, which earned them two first-half tries and a 17-0 lead at the break. They added another try in the second half, while Pumas winger Samkelo Ntshapela touched down twice for his team. But these efforts were not enough, and left them settling for a 22-10 defeat.

The clash between the Valke and Griquas was quite physical as the teams used their forwards in an attempt to gain ascendancy. The Valke, however, had the upper hand as they managed to break through the gaps in defence and they used their chances well to run in six tries, while they conceded only one, for a 36-7 victory.

Leopards flanker Divan Pieters, meanwhile, was a star player in his team’s 66-7 victory against Zimbabwe as he scored four of the side’s 10 tries in a one-sided encounter. Zimbabwe managed to score only one converted try in the first half and they were unsuccessful in their attempts to add to this in the second half as the Leopards defended with intent.

Boland put their speedy backs to good use in their clash against hosts, the Free State, which paved the way for their 26-10 victory. Boland scored two tries in the first half and added two more after the break, while Free State No 8 Johannes Hendrik Botha scored in each half in what marked the hosts’ only points.

The U13 teams will have Wednesday off to recover from the opening two rounds, while the U16 teams will battle it out in their second round after resting on Tuesday.

The Lions opened the scoring through their big eightman, Cian de Villiers, which was converted by fullback, Heina Jacobs. De Villiers with the the Nr. 5-jumper on his back was a big thorn in KZN’s flesh.
