It’s not all about T20 cricket and limited-overs cricket this coming week as Johannesburg’s cricketing showcase is set to unfold once again as the eagerly anticipated 6th St David’s Marist’s Fasken Festival takes center stage from the 31st of August to the 3rd of September 2023.
With much to be said in the media about the upcoming Proteas Test series in New Zealand and the likes of ‘Bazball’ stealing headlines during the most recent Ashes Test Series and what the future holds for the longest format of the wonderful game.
There has not been a more important time for a festival like this to take place. With the lack of current South African stars set to feature in the tour due to T20 franchise commitments, the need to grow the pool of players to create depth amongst our first class players is needed.
Each team is set to play two two-day matches which will include declarations and will be centered around time; essentially much like a mini-test match. With a lot of schools opting to focus on shorter format matches, the Fasken Festival provides a lot of young players with the taste of playing a longer format of the match for the first time.
The art of thriving under pressure, as honed in time cricket matches, can significantly influence a player’s approach to the game’s longer versions. The ability to read the game swiftly, adapt to changing conditions, and strategize effectively will be on full display over the course of the festival.
With the picturesque Johannesburg skyline surrounding St David’s Inanda and St Stithians College, the two schools where matches will be played, provides the perfect backdrop for a cricketing spectacle that celebrates not only the athleticism of the players but also the camaraderie that defines the sport.
A number of top quality cricketing schools with deep roots connected to producing some of the country’s top current and past South African and International Test cricketers will be taking part; the likes of hosts St David’s Marist Inanda (Temba Bavuma), King Edward VII (Graeme Smith, Quinton De Kock, Neil McKenzie, Keaton Jennings (England), Maritzburg College (Jonty Rhodes, David Miller, Kevin Pietersen (England), St Stithians College (Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, Ryan Rickelton) and St John’s College (Devon Conway (New Zealand).
Of the schools playing this year, King Edward VII has produced the most number of test capped players in the country. The festival is set to provide some high quality matches and some heroic defining moments for some of South Africa’s future stars as they battle it out over the course of the next few days.
An invitational Lions XI will also be featured among the participating teams, providing an opportunity for up-and-coming talent to make their mark and showcase their skills during the course of the week.
We are reminded that while time is fleeting, the impact of this festival on local cricket will be lasting.
With no real winner of the festival decided at the end of the week, it is safe to say that the real winner is South African cricket and the longevity of the beautiful game of Test cricket.
The fixtures for the St David’s Fasken Festival are:
31st August and 1st September 2023:
Jeppe High School for Boys vs Clifton (Gier Oval, St David’s)
St David’s Marist vs Maritzburg College (La Valla Oval, St David’s)
Lions Invitational vs King Edward VII (McGregor Oval, St David’s)
St Stithians College vs Waterkloof (Dlamini Oval, St Stithians)
St John’s College vs St Andrew’s (Baytop Oval, St Stithians)
Paul Roos Gimnasium vs Noordheuwel (La Rosey Oval, St David’s).
2nd and 3rd September 2023:

St David’s Marist vs Lions Invitational (La Valla Oval, St David’s)
King Edward VII vs Clifton (La Rosey Oval, St David’s)
St Stithians College vs St Andrew’s (Dlamini Oval, St Stithians)
St John’s College vs Maritzburg College (McGregor Oval, St David’s)
Noordheuwel vs Waterkloof (Baytop Oval, St Stithians)
With the first round of fixtures of the 6th Annual St David’s Fasken Festival about to get underway starting on Thursday, the festival has some exciting matches lined up.
Hosted amidst the lush grounds of St David’s Inanda and St Stithians College this annual event has become a staple in the school cricket calendar, drawing schools and enthusiasts from all corners of the country to celebrate the spirit of the sport.
The format of the fixtures is time cricket; which essentially might just be the bridge that elevates modern cricket to new heights while preserving the essence of the traditional forms. This approach fosters an environment where adaptability and strategic decision-making are key, turning every minute into an opportunity to seize victory.
Let’s see how the 12 teams stack up against each other going into the first round of fixtures:
St David’s Marist Inanda vs Maritzburg College (La Valla Oval, St David’s)
The host side St David’s takes on a formidable Maritzburg College, who make their way up the escarpment to take part in the festival.
St David’s will be going into the match eager to stamp their authority as they are faced with familiar conditions playing at home, the side will be skippered by Matthew West. The all-rounder will aim to lead from the front with both bat and ball.
Maritzburg playing in a different set of conditions might be the differentiating factor between these two sides over the course of the next couple of days.
The midlands side has a three-pronged spin attack which is held together by attacking leg spinner Chad Mason who has shown throughout 2023 that he will be challenging to read.
Jeppe High School for Boys vs Clifton College (Gier Oval, St David’s)
Jeppe recently played a warm-up match in preparation for the festival against a touring Northern Cape High School, winning that match by a sizable margin of 228 runs. The batsmen filled their pockets by piling up a total of 351/9 from 50 overs whilst spending valuable time at the crease.
Jaydon Brooker scored a classy 111 runs from 100 balls, while Kaleb Burger chipped in with 51 runs.
With it still being early in the season and not much rain about, both sides will be looking at their spinners to play crucial roles in the match. Jeppe left-arm spinner Tshepo Stafa could find himself playing a vital holding role and tying down an end, whilst the seamers could run in and bowl a barrage of attacking shorter spells.
Clifton College boasts a few players who will be returning to the festival for a second time, with some of the players having the potential to feature in further additions to the festival.
One of these players is Jayden Roux, who scored a magnificent century against St David’s last year whilst only in Grade 9. Skipper and top order batter Shahzaad Permual, will be hoping for flatter and dryer wickets where he can look to cash in on some valuable runs.
In 2019, these two sides met at the festival which resulted in a drawn match.
The Golden Lions Invitational XI vs King Edward VII (McGregor Oval, St David’s)
The Golden Lions Invitational XI, will be up against some stiff competition coming head-on with King Edward VII, many of the players would have previously shared provincial team changing rooms.
KES will be looking at youngsters Callum Ritchie, a top-order batter who bowls wrist spin to provide the team with some impetus and will need to gel well with wicketkeeper Tiaan Goosen, who will look to make a mark behind the stumps.
The Lions XI, will have their work cut out for them as many of the players will be playing with each other for the first time. The side is made up of some of the top talent within the province.
Fast bowler Mashadu Kangala, is someone to watch the youngster from Dobsonville, is known to send down some quick deliveries.
The opportunity to play against a strong side like KES gives the players a good platform to benchmark themselves up against one of the toughest teams at the festival.
St Stithians vs Hoërskool Waterkloof (Dlamini Oval, St Stithians)
Hoërskool Waterkloof has had a good lead-up to the festival, winning two back-to-back matches last weekend in the highly competitive Section A of the Pretoria League beating both Hoërskool Centurion and Prestige College in convincing fashion.
Players to watch out for include in-form opening batsmen Wian Ruthven and all-rounder Marcus Bakker. Alexander Volschenk has had a quiet build-up to the festival but has represented and captained the Namibian u19 side.
St Stithians College will feel quite at ease having the luxury of playing their first match with a home-ground advantage. In the last 10 years, St Stithians have become a cricketing powerhouse producing some talented players who have gone on to represent the Proteas.
St Stithians have four SA u19 team members who toured Bangladesh earlier this year in the form of Lhuandre Pretorius, Kwena Mhapaka, Richard Seletswane and Thebe Gazide, all of whom would have gained valuable exposure on the tour.
The match should provide a good contest between bat and ball with St Stithians going in as favourites.
St John’s College vs St Andrew’s School (Baytop Oval, St Stithians)
Two of South Africa’s premier independent schools come face-to-face in this much-anticipated clash. St John’s have had a very successful 2023, in their 125th Anniversary, winning 21 times out of 28 matches played.
St Andrew’s from Bloemfontein, have got a strong side and have been known previously to unearth some quality fast bowlers, such was the case with up-and-coming Proteas star Gerald Coetzee, however this year the side could look at u19 Free State spinner Dakalo Leketa toprovide his skipper and all-rounder Connor Nel with an attacking bowling option.
St John’s College will be banking on batsman Luke Francis who scored over 800 runs in the season, a classy top-order batter who has displayed his appetite at spending time at the crease.
Paul Roos Gimnasium vs Hoërskool Noordheuwel (La Rosey Oval, St David’s)
Paul Roos faces locals Noordheuwel, both will be eager to put their hands up as teams to be reckoned with.
Noordheuwel will be playing a side without any of their matric pupils as the end-of-year exams are fast approaching. This presents the team with an opportunity to give some of the younger more inexperienced players the ability to stamp their mark on the upcoming season.
Corne Botha who recently was selected for the SA u19 training group will be looking to display his talent. He will be well supported in the form of Dian Taljaard who has racked up 600 runs this year.
All eyes will be on Paul Roos all-rounder Cormey van der Watt, who is a left-handed bowler who regularly features in the top order, normally at first drop, the crucial number 3 position. He bowls a heavy ball and could provide some challenges for Noordheuwels’ inexperienced side.
The annual NMI Toyota Noord/Suid-tournament will once again be one of the highlights of the South African schoolboy rugby calendar in 2024.
Next year’s edition of the tournament will be the tenth tournament since the inaugural festival of rugby was hosted by Menlopark in Pretoria back in 2014.
Next year’s tournament will take place from 22 to 26 March once again at the Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool of Pretoria. All the matches will be live-streamed by SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).
During that first year’s tournament four teams – Paarl Gimnasium, Waterkloof, Menlopark and Harrismith took part. The tournament arose from this humble beginnings to a total of 24 schools that will be in action during the 2024-edition.
“When we started the tournament back in 2014 it was a nice thing that we tried to do. It has grown immensely since then with the last two to three years being on a next level,” said Pieter Rossouw, founder and organiser of the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid-tournament.
The fixtures for next year’s tournament will once again showcase the top rugby schools from around South Africa locking horns. Some of the exciting match-ups during the Saturday include Affies vs Paul Roos Gimnasium, Monument vs Paarl Gimnasium and Noordheuwel vs Stellenberg.
On the opening day schoolboy rugby supporters could brace themselves for match-ups between Paarl Boys’ High vs King Edward VII, Garsfontein vs Oakdale Landbou and Grey College vs Jeppe High School for Boys.
Grey College will also face Garsfontein in their second match which also promises to be a fixture that will produce some sparks. Garsfontein’s only defeat in 2023 came at the hands of Grey College during Wildeklawer, while the team from the City of Roses finished the season unbeaten.
Paarl Boys’ High will face Helpmekaar in their second match, while Paarl Gimnasium will take on Pretoria Boys’ High in their other clash.

CAPE TOWN.- A hat-trick of goals by Rowan Davis, coupled with a double brace from Mike Royden Turner, and captain, Dean Carrick secured a resounding (11-1) victory for the South Africa College Schools (SACS) against Wynberg Boys High in their final match of the season in Cape Town this past weekend.
The win sees SACS finish the season ranked number one in the country.
Coming into the match, SACS were undoubtedly the favourites having bossed proceedings throughout the season, and defeated every team, particularly in the Western Cape.
Their last match at home, resulted in a (3-2) win against Bishops, and before that, the Cape side thumped Rondebosch (15-0), and Paul Roos (8-1).
Wynberg on the other side were looking to try end a very challenging season on a high. The team came into the clash having lost their previous three matches against Rondebosch (2-0), Bishops (1-0), and Paul Roos Gimnasium (5-0).
However, that optimism, hope, and belief for the home side was brushed off immediately when SACS quickly took control of the match, just as they’ve done in all their matches this season.
The visitors opened the scoring in the first three minutes of the match, when Mike Royden found himself at the right place to fire the ball in.
SACS would then go on to score two more goals in the first quarter through Rowan Davis, who scored a field goal from the break when his side recovered the ball from their half – before Ozair Pillai slotted in a penalty corner with a minute left on the clock to extend his side’s lead going into the second quarter.
With drops of rain coming down in the second quarter, it was always going to be difficult for Wynberg to keep up with SACS’s fast play and movement of the ball, and that showed in the second chukka.
Despite the home side keeping SACS scoreless for the better part of the chukka, the visitors still dominated proceedings, keeping ball possession, and playing in the opposition’s half.
They finally cracked the resilient Wynberg defence with three minutes to play when Rowan Davis, smacked the ball with his stick from close range leaving the Wynberg keeper with no chance. The visitors led (4-0) at the halfway point.
The final two quarters of the match had SACS written all over them. To kick-off the third chukka, the home side received a penalty shot. Captain, Dean Carrick stepped up and converted to keep the scoreboard ticking for his side.
Carrick would go on to grab his brace, scoring from a penalty corner just after Luke Salters, and Rowan Davis also netted in goals to see SACS take an (8-0) lead into the fourth and final quarter.
The final quarter was all about seeing the match through for SACS. Even though it was no doubt that Pierre Le Roux’s team had secured the victory, the team didn’t get complacent and added to their tally with just 15 seconds played in the final quarter through Davis – who got his hattrick.
Wynberg continued to struggle, and SACS on the other side capitalised. Josh Opperman got in on the action when he scored from a rebound to make it 10.
With nine minutes left in the final quarter, Wynberg pulled one back when a cross found Tristan Butters open on goal, and he duly converted. That, however, was just a consolation goal as SACS hammered the final nail in the coffin with a goal from Mike Royden Turner to record an emphatic (11-1) win for the visitors.
In other matches:
Rondebosch and Bishops played out to a one-all draw in the Bish Bosh derby. While Durbanville edged out Stellenberg (4-2) to close off their season on a high. Edgemead also defeated Fairbairn to put an end to their season.
Scorers:
SACS 11 (Rowan Davis (4), Mike Royden-Turner (2), Dean Carrick (2), Luke Salters, Josh Opperman, Ozair Pillai); Wynberg Boys’ High 1 (Tristan Butters).
The Eunice High School hockey first team wrapped up a superb season which will see them finish the season ranked first in the country with the triumph of the Free State Cup in Bloemfontein this past weekend.
The Free State side, which is accustomed to winning and breaking records, beat rivals Voortrekker (3-2), and Sasolburg (5-0) in their final match to claim the title.
The trophy adds to the three titles the side won this year, as they also collected the St Mary Waverley Festival, Southern Free State league, and Top 12 school’s tournament before finishing third in the All-girls tournament.
As a result, the side, known for its dominance and enterprising hockey have gone one better this year, improving on the mistakes that might’ve costed them big matches last season.
In an interview with SuperSport Schools, head coach, Nika Coertzen said she was delighted with her team’s overall performance this year, as they managed to reach the targets set out at the beginning of the season.
“The season was long, but every hour that was put in was totally worth it,” she said.
“We are a close knitted family on and off the field.”
“Our goal was set to be the no.1 girls hockey team in South Africa, and we are grateful that we managed to achieve it through hard work and dedication.”
The team, throughout the whole season showed grit and determination to overcome fierce competition.
At the Fairtree Super 12 tournament, the side managed to remain unbeaten in the pool stages, beating the likes of Rhenish, Garsfontein, Durban Girls College, Pearson and Bloemhof.
They then defeated Paarl Gimnasium (3-1) in the final, and that set the side up perfectly for the Free State Cup which in coach, Coertzen’s eyes was challenging.
”The Free State Cup was a challenge due to the seven of our matric players missing out because of exams,” she added.
“But the players that got called did very well.”
“I am exceptionally proud of how the ‘new’ team stepped up.”
“The final match was a display of a good passing game, and I am excited for what this group will do during the next season.”
The school will look back on the season as one of their best – as they managed to etch their names in the history books.
The players who scored in the Free State Cup final against Sasolburg are, Cale Potgieter (2), Trusten Barnard, Zandri Wiid, and Bianca Rees-Gibbs.

Puntemakers:
Wilgerivier 71 (38) – Drieë: Jean-Pierre Prinsloo, Wian Muller, Jonty Graaff, Ruan Mayer, Ernst Richter, Thlompo Motsapi, NW de Beer, HG Muller, Marnus Swart, JD van der Berg, JF Reyneke. Doelskoppe: Tiaan Hattingh (8). St Andrews 17 (7) – Drieë: Connor Nel, Matthew Simon, Matthew Fletcher. Doelskoppe: Nel (2).
Ander wedstryd:
o.15 – De Aar 14, Bultfontein 7.
Die spanne was:
Wilgerivier: 15 Jonty Graaff, 14 Thlompo Motsapi, 13 Marnus Swart, 12 Tiaan Hattingh, 11 Ernst Richter, 10 Wian Muller, 9 HG Muller, 8 Jean-Pierre Prinsloo, 7 Ruan Mayer, 6 JD van den Berg, 5 Tom van der Watt, 4 Juan de Klerk, 3 NW de Beer, 2 Louis de Villiers, 1 Gerhart Venter.
St Andrews: 15 Connor Nel, 14 Retshedisitswe Mokoena, 13 Mlungisi Lepesa, 12 Elia Mokuoane, 11 Koena Ntssamai, 10 CM Geel, 9 Schalk Liebenberg, 8 Yavantle Peni, 7 Mandela Sipoyo, 6 Matthew Fletcher, 5 Marco de Sousa, 4 Lesedi Sipoyo, 3 Matthew Simon, 2 Ioanni Giannakopoulos, 1 Brett Barnes.
Puntemakers:
Hoopstad 45 (19) – Drieë: AP Meyer (2), Pieter Vosloo, Hennie Barnard, Arrie Ferreira, Busi Mfebe, Jurgens Human. Doelskoppe: Ferreira (5). Postmasburg 14 (0) – Drieë: Boago Toli, Bradley Clarke. Doelskoppe: Lorenzo Hael, Emmanuel van der Merwe.
Ander uitslae:
o.16 – St Andrews 17, Brandfort 12

Rondebosch Boys’ High finished the season strong with three straight wins over their peninsular rivals after their captain, Matthew Malherbe (centre), scored in the 70th minute to give his winger, Ethan Gordon, a chance for the game-winning conversion, which he knocked over expertly to steal a 36-35 win against Diocesan College on the Piley Rees field.

In a classic, high-scoring, southern suburb derby, Rondebosch got their revenge after Bishops got the better of them by 13-8 in the first match, earlier in the season.
This was the 202nd time these two great rivals had met, and with an average points difference of only three and a half points coming into the match, it was always going to be close.
It was also the last match many of these boys would play in their school jerseys, making the occasion even more special as they faced their great rivals for one last time.
The home team’s flyhalf, Shaywan Blankenberg, continued doing what he had been doing so reliably for his team all season and converted a penalty early on to open the scoring.
Rondebosch’s dynamic winger, Ethan Gordon, replied almost immediately and the pace was set for another epic encounter between the neighbouring schools.
The visitors’ fullback, David Simon, crossed the line twice. He scored the first try of the day to give his team the lead, a lead that changed hands five times throughout the match as the great rivals pushed each other to the limit.
Simon’s second came after he ran a brilliant line and stepped inside to be one of the very few players to get around Bishops’ fullback, Gilermo Mentoe, this season.
Diocesan College’s scrumhalf, Haashim Pead, also scored a brace.
The agile halfback has been a revelation this year. He is one of three SA Schools players representing Bishops in the elite squad. His fullback, Mentoe, and eighth man, Aidan Norris, also made the cut after their achievements at the Craven Week in George earlier this year.
Norris also powered over for a try to draw a line under what has been an exceptional season for the big loose forward.
The Rondebosch pack of forwards were on top of their game. After a strong carry by Carl Geddie (lock), Sunday Mailoni-Burns (flanker) was alert to get the ball to his other big lock, Tom Barnard, who powered over for another try.
By half-time, there was still only two points separating them at 22-20 and no indication of anyone gaining the upper hand.
In the second half, Pead’s second try and another by Bishops’ flanker, Olo Sepotela, saw them stretch their advantage to 35-22 with 20 minutes left on the clock, but the Rondebosch boys never looked like hanging their heads, as they continued patiently working away at the home team’s defensive line.
A late try by Juma Amissi, Rondebosch Boys’ High’s winger, meant that Bishops had to defend a six-point lead for the final nine minutes.
Gordon and Amissi started every match for Rondebosch on the wings this season, not missing any of their 17 games.
With neither team slowing down to catch their breath for a second, it was non-stop action as the fierce competitors battled it out for the final minutes before Malherbe, who had led from the front all day, broke the home teams’ hearts with a try in the final minute of play.
Gordon’s kicking was spectacular throughout the game, but he showed a real level head to convert the final try with all the excitement around him to steal a victory for the visiting side that will long still be remembered as one of the classic victories on the Piley Rees.
This completes the Triple Crown for Rondebosch Boys’ High in the second leg of the southern suburb derbies after also getting by SACS (29-21) and Wynberg Boys’ High (21-20) after the holiday break.
Their only loss in the first round came against Bishops.
The Rondebosch group looks well set up to dominate next year as well when returning players who were already standout performers this year like Simon, Barnard, Justin Amos (prop) and Dylan Miller (flyhalf) will form the core of their next campaign.
