    Puntemakers:

Welkom Gimnasium 52 (33) – Drieë: Renaldo Kiewiet (2), Navan Goeda (2), Tristan Appollis, Naylan Goeda, Teschan Meas, Ethan Jones. Doelskoppe: Naylan Goeda (3), Kiewiet (3). Hoërskool Upington 19 (7) – Drieë: PA Karsten (3). Doelskoppe: Ruwin Isaks (2).

  • Wynberg Boys’ High repeat the double over SACS

Wynberg Boys’ High repeat the double over SACS

Wynberg Boys’ High saved one of their strongest performances of the season for their final fixture against their old foes, SACS.

They ended their season on a high on their home field with an emphatic 36-14 victory.

Wynberg’s star eighth man, Xola Nyali, who captained the SA u18 side earlier this month against France, led his team from the front again in his last game in the first team jersey.

Nyali celebrated his amazing season with another stunning try in front of his home crowd, gathering the ball on his own 22m line leaving the SACS defenders in his dust and powering through the last tacklers to secure a healthy 24-7 lead at halftime.

As always, SACS gave their all in the big derby, with their little scrumhalf, Seth Bradford, endlessly attacking the line and trying to get his team on the front foot.

His big eighth man, Niche Koopman, also left everything on the field, but the visitors just didn’t have enough to contain the  Wynberg team, who were firing on all cylinders.

Wynberg opened the scoring early after a period of patiently building their attack, phase by phase, before their big lock, Monty Loggenberg, rounded off by powering over the line around a ruck.

SACS responded immediately though, with Bradford breaking the line and kicking the ball into open space for his nimble winger, Ilitha Ntinini, to gather and score to get his team back to level terms after only seven minutes played.

Bradford’s opposite number, Sange Mbuto, was equally as influential in his team’s success.

It was Mbuto’s quick thinking and long skip pass to his winger, Tyrone Gombe, that finally broke the deadlock.

Much of the second half was a stalemate again, with the home team protecting their lead against the tireless SACS attack, until Matteo Pascoe intercepted and returned the ball a good 70m to extend the advantage to 31-7.

Wynberg’s star centre, Amier Adams, who missed the starting lineup due to illness during the week, got an opportunity to run out one last time for his first team for 10 minutes when he replaced Keenan Pretorius at flyhalf.

Adams was in on the action immediately and helped played a part in getting his team into a position where they could drive their big hooker, Nicholas van Schalkwyk, over for his team’s final try to seal the double over their old rivals.

The two fullbacks were also both on top form, with Xolela Hoyi, standing out on defence for the home team and Aya Machuli getting the last word in for the visitors with the final try of the day.

SACS’ dry spell continues, with their last victory over Wynberg being the first leg of the 2019 season.

Next year they will build their team around the experience of returning players like Bradford and his flyhalf, Rayaan Solomons.

Wynberg Boys’ High’s star flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, is only in grade 10 this year, so he still has two seasons to look forward to and will definitely be one to watch in the coming years.

    Scorers:

Wynberg Boys’ High 36 (24) – Tries: Monty Loggenberg, Tyrone Gombe, Xola Nyali, Matteo Pascoe, Nicholas van Schalkwyk. Conversions: Yaqeen Ahmed (4). Penalty: Ahmed. SACS 14 (7) – Tries: Ilitha Ntinini, Aya Machuli. Conversions: Rayaan Solomons (2).

PRETORIA.

  • Captain, Osman-Bosch, returns for SACS’ final fixture against Wynberg

Captain, Osman-Bosch, returns for SACS’ final fixture against Wynberg

SACS are bolstered by the return of their stalwart loosehead prop and captain, Ali Osman-Bosch, this weekend when they travel to Wynberg Boys’ High for their final fixture of the season.

This FNB Classic Clash will be the last time that many of these boys get to run out in their schools’ colours.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools – Register now

Wynberg beat SACS by 30-17 in their own backyard earlier this year when they met for their first clash and SACS will be desperate to end what has been a difficult season on a high by getting their revenge on Saturday.

Wynberg’s star loose-forward, Xola Nyali (eighth man) led from the front in the previous meeting, scoring the opening try.

Nyali has been a standout for his side and was rewarded for his efforts with his inclusion in the SA u18 squad, which he captained against France. He returns just in time to play in his school jersey for one last game.

SACS’ captain, Osman-Bosch, was injured playing against Paul Roos Gimnasium in June, a week after he powered his team to victory with a hat-trick of tries in their 28-10 win against Hoërskool Bellville.

He has been unavailable since then, and returns for the final fixture of his matric year against their arch nemesis.

SACS is coming off another disappointing loss at home after Gilermo Mentoe (fullback) stole a victory for Bishops last weekend with a penalty conversion in the final moments to break the hearts of the SACS boys with a 27-25 defeat.

Wynberg looked sharp against Rondebosch Boys’ High last weekend, but they came up just short by 21-20.

Their Craven Week flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed moves to inside centre for the final fixture and Keenan Pretorius steps up to manage the attack from the flyhalf position.

SACS’ big tighthead, Ikhona Maxegwana, has been excellent in his captain’s absence in the front row, and now that Osman-Bosch is back in his position, the two big boys will be looking to dominate up front on the weekend.

The two fullbacks, Xolela Hoyi from Wynberg and Aya Machuli from SACS are also bound to face up one-on-one at some point, with both providing excellent service for their respective teams throughout the year.

Last year, Wynberg managed a double over SACS, beating them by 40-15 in the first encounter, and getting away with a 16-5 victory in the final match.

The last time SACS beat Wynberg was in 2019, when Ian Patterson (flanker), son of former Western Province hooker, Andrew Patterson, was in that SACS team.

Both of these schools take immense pride in their rugby programs and with a rivalry as historically fierce as this, there could be no better way for these boys to see out their school rugby-playing careers.

    The teams are:

Wynberg Boys’ High vs SACS at 12:30:

Wynberg Boys’ High: 15 Xolela Hoyi, 14 Matteo Pascoe, 13 Brandon Ashburner, 12 Yaqeen Ahmed, 11 Tyrone Gombe, 10 Keenan Pretorius, 9 Sange Mbuto, 8 Xola Nyali, 7 Aden da Costa, 6 Jarryd Jackson, 5 Michail Kasfikis, 4 Montgmomery Loggenberg, 3 Luqobo Makwedini, 2 Nicholas van Schalkwyk, 1 Aidan Reid.

SACS: 15 Aya Machuli, 14 Nick Reynolds, 13 Daniel Dayaram, 12 Raashied Conrad, 11 Ilitha Ntinini, 10 Rayaan Solomons, 9 Seth Bradford, 8 Niche Koopman, 7 Ben van Coller, 6 Richard Skeeles, 5 Khwezi Ndlovu, 4 Zach Kennedy, 3 Ikhona Maxegwana, 2 Alex Pybus, 1 Ali Osman-Bosch.
