Seeing runs flow early in the season makes one very excited about what the schools’ cricket season has in store for the remainder of 2024.

On Sunday, Hoërskool Garsfontein kicked off their Titans League challenge with a hugely impressive victory over Prestige College in Hammanskraal.

The Ysbere powered their way to a mammoth 296/6 in their 50 overs. What made their effort impressive, however, was the fact that the side from Pretoria didn’t register a century, which meant all of their batsmen contributed significantly.

Charl van Staden led the way. Batting at five, he played a nicely paced, mature innings, finishing with 83 runs from just 78 deliveries, which included smashing seven fours and two sixes. Righardt Joubert provided strong support, making an unbeaten 48 runs in a 113-run partnership between the pair.

Their success would not have been possible, however, without Ettienne du Toit, who laid a sound platform for Garsfontein with an innings of 61 runs, which came from only 54 balls. He, too, found the boundary regularly, blasting six fours and two sixes.

Then, Eckardt Struwig capped off a wonderful all-round performance from the Ysbere with a superb bowling performance. He benefitted from a good foundation, which was laid by the Garsies’ opening bowlers, Stefan van Staden (3/26) and Nayleo Sanna (2/25), who shared five wickets between them. Struwig captured the remaining five wickets for only 12 runs and, for good measure, also claimed a hattrick as Garsfontein cruised to an emphatic 207-run victory.

Hoërskool Waterkloof passed their first big test in the league with flying colours. The Klofies put in an impressive shift with the willow to beat their old rivals, Hoërskool Menlopark, by seven wickets.

This time around it was Marcus Bakker‘s turn to take charge. The all-rounder’s experience shone through as he expertly made his way to an unbeaten 106 runs from 100 balls.

Rico van der Walt ensured the scoreboard kept ticking, contributing 55 runs in a 101-run partnership with Bakker. Riley Miller then wasted no time in seeing Waterkloof to victory as he smashed five sixes in an unbeaten 46.

With Menlopark winning the toss and electing to bat first, it came as no surprise that SA u19 opening batsman, Steve Stolk, led the way for visitors. He looked dangerous, cracking 63 runs from just 40 balls, which included seven fours and four sixes.

Matt van der Westhuizen (42) and Morné Koekemoer (40) provided good support as the Parkies’ put up a decent first innings score. Unfortunately for them, though, it wasn’t enough to faze the extremely experienced and classy Klofie lineup, which chased down the 251 they required for victory in the 39th over.

    Summarised scorecards:

Garsfontein 296/6 (Charl van Staden 83, Ettienne du Toit 61, Righardt Joubert 48*, Extras 29, Wikus du Preez 27, Jared Carr 26; Koketso Jonas 2/57). Prestige College 89 (Thabang Kutumela 26, Keamogetswe Semenya 20; Eckard Struwig 5/12, Stefan van Staden 3/26, Nayleo Sanna 2/25). Garsfontein won by 207 runs.

Menlopark 251 (Steve Stolk 63, Matt van der Westhuizen 42, Morné Koekemoer 40, Extras 28; Marcus Bakker 3/31, Marno Pienaar 3/54, Wian Ruthven 2/31). Waterkloof 256/3 (Marcus Bakker 106*, Rico van der Walt 55, Riley Miller 46*, Divan Behrens 26; Dian van Zyl 1/25). Waterkloof won by seven wickets.

  • Grey College to get a re-match against Jeppe at the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid tournament in 2025

Seven new faces and a re-match between Grey College and Jeppe High School for Boys are on the table for the annual NMI Toyota Noord/Suid rugby tournament that will take place from 28 March until 1 April 2025 in the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The seven new faces are Boland Landbou, Rondebosch Boys’ High, SACS, Diamantveld, Nico Malan, Hoërskool Rustenburg and Framesby. In total 30 of South Africa’s top rugby-playing schools will be in action during the tournament which is starting to cement its place as the leading school rugby festival in the country.

All schools’ second teams will also be in action during the tournament. In total 60 matches will be played in Stellenbosch.

Some of the biggest match-ups outside traditional rugby rivalries will happen this year at the Markötter.

Grey College will have a chance to avenge their defeat against Jeppe earlier this year during Noord/Suid in Pretoria. It was Jeppe’s first-ever victory over Grey and was reckoned to be the biggest upset in over a century in schoolboy rugby.

Grey could also bury another ghost during this clash next year as they suffered their heaviest defeat ever at the Markötter Stadium last week against Paul Roos Gimnasium (3-36).

The hosts, Paul Roos Gimnasium, will face Garsfontein and Noordheuwel in their two matches. The Garsie Bere has been running with the big dogs for some time now, with Nories starting to bite at the heels of the big dogs.

Affies and Paarl Boys’ High will lock horns again in a clash that promises to be one of the tournament’s highlights. Paarl Gimnasium‘s clash on the Monday against Monument‘s Wit Bulle will also be a cracker. Boishaai will face Waterkloof in their first match before taking on Affies.

There are too many good match-ups during the next year’s tournament to mention all in one article.

All the matches will be live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com).

  • Grey High grabs both High School Sevens titles in Gqeberha

The hosts, Grey High School, made full use of their home ground advantage when they hosted The High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, in Gqeberha on the weekend, with both their u17 and u15 teams finishing as champions.

The u17 team played some tight games on their way to the title. They got by Brandwag 14-5 in their Pool A opener and were extended by Framesby in the Cup semi-finals, winning 17-12.

However, in the final, they brought their best and notched a 33-5 win over Graeme College.

Framesby topped Pool B, Graeme cruised through Pool C, and Nico Malan ruled in Pool D. In the Cup semis, Framesby accounted for Nico Malan, taking that match 24-12.

Kirkwood claimed the Shield with a 21-17 defeat of Port Rex, while the Bowl went to Grey High 2, who took down Muir College 40-24 in a high-scoring encounter.

Brandwag comfortably won the Plate final, beating Pearson 29-7, while Framesby edged out Nico Malan 19-17 in the third-place playoff.

    U15 Competition

Grey High was rampant in the u15 competition. They won all five of their matches, scoring 194 points while conceding only 21. In Pool A, they tallied 110 points in two outings and didn’t allow a point to be scored against them.

Marlow emerged as the winners of Pool B, with Muir edging out Brandwag 2 for second place after the teams shared a draw.

Nico Malan battled their way to a narrow 12-5 victory over Grey 2 in the key contest of Pool C to finish top there, while a successful conversion saw Graeme sneak by Brandwag 7-5 to pick up first place in Pool D.

Muir managed to score twice against Grey High in the Cup quarterfinals, but Grey still won by 22 points. Marlow comfortably brushed aside Westering 33-0, while Brandwag won 19-7 against Grey 2, and Graeme College held on for a 17-12 win over Nico Malan.

In the semi-finals, Grey saw off Marlow 29-7, while there was only one point in it in the other semi, with Graeme nudging out Brandwag by a 21-20 margin.

With the title on the line, Grey High kept Graeme at bay to record a 17-0 victory.

Mzontsundu handed Port Rex a 17-0 loss to win the Bowl final, while Nico Malan won by 21 points against Muir in the Plate final.

  • Sarel Cilliers surges to victory at Pionier Sevens, Marais Viljoen wins u15 title

Sarel Cilliers claimed the u17 title and Marais Viljoen captured the u15 honours when The High School Sevens Series, proudly sponsored by Toyota, visited Hoërskool Pionier in Vryheid over the weekend.

The event was played over two days and brought together teams from as far away as Zululand and, in the case of Marais Viljoen, from Gauteng.

In the u17 competition, the hosts, Pionier topped Pool A, while Vryheid Landbou put their experience in the Glenwood Sevens to full use, which helped them win Pool B.

Pool C was comfortably won by Sarel Cilliers, while Zayo Rhinos emerged as the winners of Pool D.

In the Cup semi-finals, Vryheid Landbou accounted for Pionier, recording a 26-14 victory, to move on to the title game. Meanwhile, Sarel Cilliers was stretched by Zayo Rhinos but came away with a hard-fought 24-17 win.

The final, unfortunately, was an anti-climax as Vryheid Landbou ran out of legs, with their exertions of the past two weeks catching up with them. It was a comfortable outing for Sarel Cilliers who cruised to the crown, winning 49-5.

The Shield went Estcourt‘s way after a 21-17 win over HS Vryheid 2, while Richards Bay held off their neighbours, Empangeni, to win the Bowl 17-12. Marais Viljoen picked up the Plate with a 31-12 defeat of Ferrum.

    U15 Competition

In the u15 competition, Marais Viljoen cruised through their group assignments but found a tough opponent in John Ross College in the Cup quarterfinals. They advanced, nonetheless, with a 17-10 win.

Pionier sneaked by Empangeni by two points, Sarel Cilliers ousted Vryheid Landbou 26-17, and HS Vryheid convincingly dealt with Ferrum, winning 31-12.

They were stopped by Marais Viljoen in the semi-finals, however, with the school from Alberton booking their place in the final after a 15-10 win. Pionier squeezed past Sarel Cilliers in the other semi, edging it 14-12.

It was tight in the final, too, with Marais Viljoen lifting the title after a 24-19 victory.

Amajuba downed Gelofte 19-7 to hoist the Shield, Richards Bay ran out 21-0 winners over Estcourt in the Bowl final, and Vryheid Landbou bagged the Plate with a 33-12 win over John Ross College.

  • Derby delight for SACS and Bishops

South African College High School (SACS) and Bishops Diocesan College claimed wins on the final weekend of the schoolboy hockey season in the southern suburbs to conclude their campaigns on a winning note.

SACS, as they have done the whole season, dialled up the intensity and recorded an emphatic 5-0 win over Wynberg Boys’ High at the Brewery Astroturf.

Meanwhile, Bishops were made to work hard for their 3-2 win over Rondebosch Boys’ High away from home.

The four southern suburbs teams have had contrasting campaigns, with SACS claiming victory against their three rivals during the season.

In the first installment of the southern suburbs’ derbies, coach Sam Holmes’ team took home a 3-0 win against Rondebosch before edging out Wynberg 1-0 in their final term two matches.

In the second half of the season, SACS turned up the tempo and ran rampant against ‘Bosch, scoring freely in their second meeting to record an emphatic 8-2 win before beating Bishops 3-0 earlier this month at the Woodlands Astroturf.

It has been another incredible season for SACS. They’ve finished it unbeaten at home and retained the Western Province u18 Premier League title. It was important to conclude it with a victory, to ensure the gloss remained on their achievements, especially facing Wynberg at home, and with both teams bidding farewell to their grade 12 players.

After a nervy start, with the visitors applying early pressure, SACS opened the scoring against the run of play when Litha Kraai intercepted the ball near the halfway line and dribbled almost 20 metres before entering the circle. He then rounded goalkeeper Zack Raizenberg to slot the ball into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead after the first chukka.

The home side doubled their advantage in the second quarter through a Regan Wille goal, before Kraai made it 3-0 with a penalty stroke after he was fouled inside the circle by Raizenberg.

In the third chukka, Kraai completed his hattrick by converting another penalty stroke, and Connor van der Schyff added a further goal to make it 5-0 and put a bow on another supremely impressive season for the side from Newlands.

Elsewhere in Rondebosch, Bishops Diocesan College, after a rather disappointing second half of the season, was intent on ending the season on a high away from home.

In the third term, Bishops had suffered a 1-2 loss to Paul Roos, gone down 0-3 against SACS, 1-3 against Wynberg, and 1-2 to Paarl Gimnasium. After a blazing start to the season, they had gone off the boil.

The game against ‘Bosch, though, wasn’t only an opportunity to bounce back against their fierce rivals, it also presented coach Ryan Julius’s side with an opportunity to complete a double in the Bish-Bosch clash.

Bishops did it. Despite being made to dig deep in the latter stages of the game, they held on for a 3-2 win.

Their goals were scored by Thomas Malan, Joshua Mettler, and James Grieve.

  • England u18 announce team to face South Africa

Head coach Jonathan Pendlebury and assistant coach Will Parkin have named their England U18 Men’s side to face South Africa on the final matchday of the 2024 International Series.

England will take on the hosts at Paarl Boys’ High School this Tuesday at 12:30 BST, and the game will be streamed live on SuperSport Schools.

There are eight changes to the squad that beat Georgia on matchday two, with Aiden Ainsworth-Cave set to earn his first Series start.

Connor Treacey will earn his tenth U18 cap as captain of the 26-strong matchday squad and is accompanied by Ainsworth-Cave and Jack Marshall in the back-row, while Tom Dye switches to tight-head prop.

Fraser Rawlins starts on the left wing this week, having scored two tries in England’s first win of the Series.

Their overall improvement as players and as a squad is crucial and something that has been incredibly pleasing.

“Our performance and result against Georgia was a testament to the character of this squad, who have impressed all of us as staff on their ownership, exploration and determination to consistently ‘Get Better’ throughout the last two weeks.
