Day one of the Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport, delivered goals galore in Botha’s Hill on Friday.

In the boys’ high school section, Garsfontein stuck their hands up as potential champions with good hockey and an unbeaten run, while in the girls’ high school matches both Danville and St Mary’s DSG went through the day unbeaten.

    Boys’ High School matches

Garsfontein made a strong impression in the boys’ competition, going five for five, including a narrow 3-2 win over Hilton College, who won their remaining three games convincingly.

Garsies’ record included a 2-1 win over the defending champions, Westville Boys’ High, who were also beaten 4-3 by Clifton College. Surprisingly, when Hilton College and Clifton met, Hilton won comfortably, cruising to a 6-1 win.

It was a good day for Clifton, however. They beat Ashton, Kearsney, Westville and Michaelhouse, with the latter going to a penalty shootout after the teams had finished level at 3-3.

Clifton got the better of Kearsney, recording a 6-3 win.

Apart from their setback against Garsfontein, Hilton shone. With an attitude of taking shots from anywhere (which is allowed in the Hockey 5s), the boys from Midlands provided plenty of action and plenty of goals.

They overran Ashton 8-1, beat St Alban’s 5-2, and Clifton 6-1.

It was a tough day for the hosts, last year’s beaten finalists. They won only one of their four games.

    Girls’ High School matches

Danville, beaten in the 2023 final, caught the eye on the opening day of the girls’ competition, roaring their way to three big wins.

They opened with an 8-0 shellacking of Thomas More College, blanked Ashton 4-0, and ended their commitments with an 8-2 victory over Curro Hillcrest.

With 20 goals scored and only two conceded, Danville posted three impressive wins on the opening day of the Kearsney 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport.

St Mary’s DSG, without their grade 12s, like the rest of the teams, but also missing their grade 10s, who are in the Drakensberg, also went three for three.

They won 6-2 against Maris Stella but were then stunned by a fantastic fightback from Thomas More, which brought the game level at 4-4 before Saints bagged a winner.

In their last game of the day, they found matters more routine in a 5-1 defeat of Ashton.

  • Bosch looking to bag a Southern Suburb Slam

    PHOTO: MBL Photography

Rondebosch Boys’ High will most probably complete a southern suburbs white-wash as they face their old-foe Diocesan College in their final outing of the 2024 season.

Bosch hasn’t lost a match thus far against their southern suburbs opponents during the season. They won their first encounter against their neighbours, Bishops, by 31-16 in their annual Bisch-Bosch clash.

Bishops did not have the best season by their standards but have been producing solid performances during the last couple of weeks. They have beaten SACS by 12-10 and also led Wynberg Boys’ High by 9-7 at half-time before losing the encounter by 16-38.

Bosch will therefore not be overly confident for Saturday’s clash at home. They will also be without their flanker Josh Neill for this encounter as he is representing South Africa at the u18 International Series in Paarl. Neill was one of the star performers during the annual Stadio Craven Week in Krugersdorp as Western Province cemented their place as the best.

Their centre Alutha Wesi is also still on duty for the national team as a flanker. The midfield pairing of Ewan Lawrie and Randall-John Davids has however been solid the last couple of weeks.

Their fullback who represented the SA u18A side, Dylan Miller, is however back to face Bishops. Bishops’ left wing, Lucca Mynhardt, is the dangerman and would like to finish his season off with another solid performance.

SACS will be eying a victory over Wynberg Boys’ High as the latter missing their SA u18 flyhalf, Yaqeen Ahmed, for their final clash of the season. They have beaten a full-strength Wynberg away from home by 30-29 earlier in the season.

Wynberg Boys’ High’s captain, Aden da Costa, will have to produce a big performance to help his side secure victory. Da Costa, Xabiso Mkiva (hooker) and Luqobo Makwedini (prop) are back after service for the SA u18A side.

The dangerman for SACS is their fullback, Jack Benade, who had an outstanding season so far troubling defences with his eluding runs from the back.

    The teams:

Rondebosch Boys’ High vs Diocesan College at Tinkie Heyns field from 12:20:

Rondebosch Boys’ High: 15 Dylan Miller, 14 David Kadima, 13 Randall-John Davids, 12 Ewan Lawrie, 11 Shakeel Abrahams, 10 David Simon, 9 James Kirsten, 8 Collin-Paul Kemp, 7 Connor Arbuthnot, 6 Matthys du Plooy, 5 Danil-Nicolas Oosthuizen, 4 Carl Geddie, 3 Damian Spence, 2 Justin Amos (captain), 1 Luke Pretorius.

  • Strong first half gives SA u18s edge over Ireland

PAARL, SOUTH AFRICA – AUGUST 16: Cheswill Jooste of South Africa scores a try during the U18 International Series match between South Africa and Ireland at Hoerskool Paarl Gimnasium on August 16, 2024 in Paarl, South Africa. (Photo by Ashley Vlotman/Gallo Images)

A dominant first-half performance laid the foundation for a well-deserved 38-26 victory for South Africa over Ireland in their first outing of the Under-18 International Series at Paarl Gimnasium in bright sunshine on Friday afternoon.

The SA u18s enjoyed a deserved 21-12 halftime lead after scoring three converted tries, while the Irish responded with two tries and a conversion during an enterprising first half before an appreciative crowd which included a sizable Irish contingent.

Both sides added two converted tries in the second half, which was characterised by a raft of replacements as both teams gave opportunities to their full squads. South Africa also landed a long-range penalty goal to ensure they finished well out of range of the powerful Irish side.

With Riley Norton (lock), who was named Player of the Match, leading the way, the hosts had the upper hand in the set pieces in the first half, with Ireland sloppy at lineout time which saw them losing three on the trot and a further four after the break.

However, the Irish had a complete reversal of fortunes in the scrum during the second half, when they made life difficult for the SA pack, especially after sending their replacement forwards onto the park.

Ireland who got off to the perfect start when Connor Magee (hooker) scored in the right-hand corner from a well-executed lineout maul to put them 5-0 ahead.

Five minutes later, from a stolen lineout and a clever kick ahead into the Irish 22, the SA U18s’ strong running centre Markus Muller went in under the posts for the hosts’ opening try, converted by flyhalf Yaqeen Ahmed.

Shortly afterwards, South Africa went further ahead when the lively Ahmed was the architect of the second try, with a lovely break from a set piece to put Zekhethelo Siyaya (left wing) over under the uprights to stretch the hosts’ lead to 14-5.

Jack Deegan (centre) then reduced the deficit for the Irish with a converted try, but the South Africans didn’t waste time to cross for their third try – and Siyaya’s second – when the speedster gathered a clever grubber from the impressive Muller. Ahmed added the extras to stretch the SA advantage to 21-12 at the break.

With SA punished with two yellow cards and their replacements struggling to make an impact upfront, the Irish gained the ascendancy upfront, and Magee barged his way over for his second try, which was also converted to make it a two-point game.

But the SA u18 pack worked hard to stay in the fight, and captain Sethu Mnebelele capped a good performance with a try to edge his side 28-19 ahead with more than half of the second stanza remaining.

They then turned on the style when exciting outside back replacement Cheswill Jooste outstripped the defence on the left flank for another converted try, their fifth of the afternoon which was converted by fullback Akahluwa Boqwana.

Replacement back Vusi Moyo then landed a long-range penalty goal to take the game away from the Irish at 38-19 and despite a fourth Irish try, it was a deserved win for the SA U18s in their first outing of the tournament.

Earlier on Friday, England had to draw on all their reserves and produced a second-half masterclass as they wiped out a 20-10 deficit at the break to defeat a gritty Georgia 27-20 for their first win of the series.

The U18 International Series concludes next Tuesday when South Africa faces England and Ireland take on Georgia at Paarl Boys’ High’s Brug Street fields.

    Scorers:

South Africa 38 (21) – Tries: Zekhethelo Siyaya (2), Markus Muller, Sethu Mnebelele, Cheswill Jooste. Conversions: Yaqeen Ahmed (3), Aka Boqwana (2). Penalty: Vusi Moyo. Ireland 26 (12) – Tries: Conor Magee (2), Jack Deegan, Jamie Conway. Conversions: Conor O’Shaughnessy (2), Tom Wood.

  • Paul Roos one victory away from securing their place in folklore

    Photo: Charmaine Sander

Paul Roos Gimnasium‘s First XV is standing on the edge of glory this Saturday as they take on Grey College of Bloemfontein in their final encounter of the season in the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch. The match kicks-off at 15:00.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) or DStv Channel 216. The clash is also a part of the Premier Interschools calendar.

The Maroon Machine boasts an undefeated record so far this season. A victory over Grey College will mean that the Jolla Bolla after the match might be the sweetest since 1991. The side from 1991 was the last first team of Paul Roos to secure an unbeaten season.

One of Paul Roos’ key players flanker Gert Kemp’s father Bles Kemp was part of the unbeaten 1991 side. This team included players like Justin Swart (fullback), Cobus Visagie (prop), Johan van Wyk (hooker), Jurian Prins (centre), Thian Muller (captain and flanker) and Morné Vermeulen (flyhalf).

The side from 2018 came close to finishing their season unbeaten but fell a couple of points short in their final match against Grey College (26-28) in Bloemfontein. The team of 2018 included players like Kade Wolhuter (flyhalf), Robbie Rodgers (prop), Tiaan Pretorius (wing), Brendan Venter (centre) and JJ Kotze (hooker).

Back to 2024, the hosts will have to play without their influential captain, Riley Norton. To rub even more potential salt into Paul Roos’ wounds is the fact that Norton was named Man of the Match for his performance in South Africa u18’s victory of 38-26 over Ireland on Friday. Norton’s leadership on the field will be missed. The double SA Schools sportsman is probably worth more than three players for his school’s side.

The big test for Grey College during the match will be in the midfield with Thristan Maree and debutant Jean Rossouw having to keep big Samuel Badenhorst at bay. Badenhorst is on song and he showed his class on Monday during the SA u18A’s clash against Georgia. Maree at outside centre had a couple of starts this season for Grey, but it will be Rossouw’s first which will be a true baptism by fire.

Both Grey’s centres Pieter van der Merwe and Ethan Adams are representing South Africa during the u18 International Series.

Badenhorst and loosehead prop, Oliver Reid‘s, presence will without a doubt boost this host’s morale. It is however Grey College that is favoured most by the returning of the South Africa u18A’s to their schools with captain and hooker, Liam van Wyk, flyhalf and Craven Week Player of the Tournament Alzeadon Felix, and scrumhalf, Philip McLaren, returning for one final outing.

    The teams:

Paul Roos Gimnasium: 15 Keenan Stoffels, 14 Matthew Kleyn, 13 Ian Smith, 12 Samuel Badenhorst, 11 Divan Lambrecht, 10 Joshua Dampies, 9 Liam de Silva, 8 Christian Kolbe, 7 Gert Kemp, 6 Malan Erasmus, 5 Charl Horwill, 4 Truspe Schoeman, 3 Henry du Plessis, 2 Altus Rabe, 1 Oliver Reid.

Grey College: 15 Heinz Stockenström, 14 Pretorius Ekeji, 13 Thristan Maree, 12 Jean Rossouw, 11 Ruben Cilliers, 10 Alzeadon Felix, 9 Philip McLaren, 8 Liam Santos, 7 Juliun Cosmo, 6 Xander Smit, 5 Renier Grobler, 4 Heinrich Theron, 3 Danie Kruger, 2 Liam van Wyk (captain), 1 Dian Venter.

Bergsig Akademie: 15 Alzandro dos Santos, 14 Gareth Hofstra, 13 MJ Pretorius, 12 Dan Bogopane, 11 Lundro Scheepers, 10 Luan Duvenhage, 9 Paulo dos Santos, 8 Juhandré Steyl, 7 Dewald Potgieter, 6 Christian de Abreu, 5 Taffa Luyanda, 4 Caleb Kihoro 3 Bhongo Sakie, 2 Phillo Thomas, 1 Tjaard Bernard. Plaasvervangers: 16 PJ Muller, 17 Thabang Machubene, 18 Trenton Coleman, 19 TK Bagwase, 20 Renaldo Prinsloo, 21 Carlo de Jager, 22 Jacque du Plooy, 23 Marlow Mowers.

Overkruin: 15 Jiftal Langeveldt, 14 Waylon Oncke, 13 Leequine Fredricks, 12 Owam Freempong, 11 Tao Fabri, 10 Marnus Rademeyer, 9 Christon de Kooker, 8 Victory Akinwunmi, 7 Marco Smith, 6 Okuhle Hini, 5 Divan Maré, 4 Musa Vukela, 3 Justin Kunz, 2 Barend Buys, 1 Jandré Pieters.

Robertson: 15 Alexander Stemmet, 14 Haygan Present, 13 Bernardo Diedericks, 12 Tyron Matthys, 11 Johaylin Jansen, 10 Tyron April, 9 Kyle Cedras, 8 Ethan Fourie, 7 André Gelderblom, 6 Ivor Thompson, 5 Marvin Maans, 4 Mychal Swart, 3 Petrus Coetzee, 2 Yannick du Plessis, 1 Jeandré Viljoen.

  • The clash between Paul Roos and Grey College deserves more respect

Gert Kemp, Paul Roos Gimnasium flank. Photo: Charmaine Sander

There is no doubt that the country’s school system is the foundation for the success of South African rugby and the Springboks.

That point is evident in the annual interschools showdown between Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG), of Stellenbosch, and Grey College, from Bloemfontein.

Catch all the action live on SuperSport Schools (www.supersportschools.com) or on DStv Channel 216.

The two schools have produced the most and second most Springboks since South Africa played its first Test in 1891. On Saturday, at the Markötter Stadium in Stellenbosch, they will once again face each other in an end of the season clash which will determine which team was South Africa’s premier schoolboy rugby side in 2024 season.

Nothing illustrates the magnitude of their traditional derby more than the fact that all the seated tickets for the match were sold out within minutes almost a month ago when they were released to the public. Paul Roos, then, decided to add another 2 500 seats by bringing in more stands for the day. The additional seating was also gobbled up within minutes of the tickets going on sale.

The good news is that walk-in tickets are still available for supporters who would like to attend and are content with finding a place around the field from which to watch the two heavyweights battle it out. “Even the secret stash of tickets we kept aside has been claimed,” said one administrator from Paul Roos.

The fact that this interschools clash has been affected by SA Rugby’s u18 programme since 2009 is a sad affair. Both schools have regularly contributed players to the Springboks and their annual clash, which often has so much at stake, such as the status of number one this year, deserves more respect from SA Rugby.

This year, three players from Grey College – AJ Meyer (lock), Ethan Adams and Pieter van der Merwe (both centres) will miss out on their final school game in front of a sold-out crowd.

The hosts, meanwhile, will be without their influential captain, Riley Norton (lock), as well as Reuben Kruger (flank) and Adeeb Boraine (scrumhalf).

All six players will represent South Africa’s u18-side against Ireland in Paarl on Friday.

France withdrew from the u18 International Series due to a tragic incident in which one of their players, Medhi Narjissi, was swept out to sea by a rip current at Diaz Beach in Cape Town. That caused the series to be shortened for the South Africa u18A side.

SA u18A played only one match against Georgia, which the local boys won 20-3, and that also featured a good number of players from Grey College and Paul Roos. Liam van Wyk (captain and hooker), Alzeadon Felix (flyhalf) and Philip McLaren (scrumhalf) were released back to the Bloemfontein powerhouse earlier this week, while Paul Roos was also strengthened by the return of Oliver Reid (prop) and Sam Badenhorst (centre).

The schools don’t seem to be able to move their annual clash to an earlier date. It has been almost 15 years since the national u18 programme started, but it appears that no one is interested enough in finding a solution to give the big interschools clash the respect it deserves.

Paul Roos is still unbeaten in 2024 and a victory over Grey would cement the PRG squad’s legacy in the annals of the school’s illustrious rugby history. Grey College has suffered only one defeat this season, which happened at the NMI Toyota Noord/Suid Tournament in Pretoria, where Jeppe High School for Boys scoring a stunning 22-19 upset victory.

A win for the home side would also give them their first unbeaten side since 1991. Interestingly, that’s the year that the annual interschools fixtures between the two giants started. That year, Paul Roos beat Grey College 20-3.

The PRG lineup in 1991 included two future Springboks – Justin Swart (fullback) and Cobus Visagie (tighthead prop) – while the Grey College ranks included future Boks, André-Henri “Ollie” le Roux (loosehead prop) and Werner Swanepoel (scrumhalf).

In die o.14-eindstryd sal Riebeeckrand and Wolmaransstad sake teen mekaar uitspook.

    Die spanne is:

Hoërskool Linden: 15 Zander Fourie, 14 Etienne Fouché, 13 Jeandré Müller, 12 Aidan Mans, 11 Ruben Little, 10 Francois Steyn, 9 Ruan Erasmus, 8 Ayden Davel, 7 Keatin Carlse, 6 Dylan Fourie, 5 Lincoln Engelbrecht, 4 Wouter Toerien, 3 Dylan Pieterse, 2 Zackie Crow, 1 Ryan Nel. Riebeeckrand: 15 Junaid Fortuin, 14 Cayleb Hadebe, 13 Eshihle Sibisi, 12 Peet de Bruin, 11 Mika Seatle, 10 Zac Smit, 9 Freddy Parrott, 8 Luyanda Kubheka, 7 Kobus Malan, 6 Xander Wray, 5 Terry Billa, 4 Dylan Jacobs, 3 Hardus Carew, 2 Zander Viljoen, 1 Reinhard Eloff.
