  • Ruthven ruthless in Waterkloof’s opener, Boys High overpowers Prestige College

Hoërskool Waterkloof’s ruthless opening batsman, Wian Ruthven, started his last school season with a bang.

Ruthven opened his 2024 Titans League account with a scintillating century as the Klofies convincingly beat Hoërskool Centurion by eight wickets on Saturday.

With Waterkloof chasing 252 runs for victory, the right-hander put his clean ball striking on full display, smashing the ball to all parts of his home ground, the Andre van der Walt Oval.

His 128 runs came from only 57 deliveries and included 21 boundaries – 11 fours and 10 sixes. Ruthven also led the way with the ball, claiming two scalps for 61 runs in nine overs.

Out in the middle, he received solid support from his team-mates, with Divan Behrens, his opening partner over the last two seasons, chipping in with a well-played 38 runs, while Marcus Bakker and Rico van der Walt contributed 40 runs each to steer their side to a comfortable victory.

The Woeries, who lost by 10 wickets to Pretoria Boys High in their season opener, made significant strides compared to their batting performance from a week earlier. Their captain and highly regarded top-order batsman, Charl Prinsloo, was on fire, cracking 137 runs to lead the way for his side.

Opening batsman Stefan de Villiers also made use of the batting-friendly conditions, contributing 59 runs before he was eventually removed.

Waterkloof will have a big test when they face Hoërskool Menlopark on Sunday. The match will also be played at the Andre van der Walt Oval.

Pretoria Boys High secured a second convincing win on the trot as their bowlers bullied Prestige College. The Boys High new ball partnership of Tim Tattersall and Johan Coetzer proved too much for the batsmen from Hammanskraal. They picked up three wickets each in the blink of an eye, conceding only 17 runs between them. Nicholas Rossouw lent good support, snapping up 2 for 24.

Rossouw and Coetzer also led the way with the willow. Coetzer top scored with a mature 24 runs from 36 deliveries, while Rossouw scored a-run-a- ball 20 to see PBHS to a seven-wicket win.

    Summarised scorecards:

Hoërskool Centurion 251/6 (Charl Prinsloo 137, Stefan de Villiers 59, Jaydon Potgieter 23; Wian Ruthven 2/61). Waterkloof 253/2 (Wian Ruthven 128, Rico van der Walt 40*, Marcus Bakker 40*, Divan Behrens 38; Carlo Kotze 1/35). Waterkloof won by eight wickets.

Prestige College 84 (Extras 22, Jose Slater 18; Tim Tattersall 3/6, Johan Coetzer 3/11, Nicholas Rossouw 2/24). Pretoria Boys High 87/3 (Johan Coetzer 24*, Nicholas Rossouw 20*; Koketso Jonas 1/25). Pretoria Boys High won by seven wickets.

  • Hilton and Danville lift Kearsney Hockey 5s trophies

Kearsney beat their local rivals Westville twice in one day on their way to a fifth- place finish in the 2024 Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport.
Kearsney beat their local rivals Westville twice in one day on their way to a fifth- place finish in the 2024 Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport.

Garsfontein enjoyed an unbeaten run through to the final of the Kearsney Hockey 5s, powered by Belgotex Sport, but they were finally stopped in the final by Hilton College.

Earlier in the event, Garsies had beaten Hilton 3-2, but the Midlands school turned the tables and recorded a 3-0 victory to claim the title.

It was a tough break for Garsfontein, who played some fantastic hockey, with their SA u17 star Luken Brunette impressing with his control and composure at the back.

Hilton, though, were up for the game and they kept taking it to Garsfontein until the dam wall eventually broke. Captain Regan Mudau made the breakthrough and then added a second before Xavier Enslin made sure the trophy would end up in Hilton’s hands.

Hilton’s Director of Hockey Devon van der Merwe revealed his team’s unusual approach to the competition after they had secured the title. “We haven’t given one team talk this weekend,” he admitted. “We believe in what we want to do.

That winning feeling: Hilton College captain Regan Mudau hoists the winner's trophy high.

“It’s our time of the year now where it’s about enjoyment. It’s about giving them the basics and they must figure out the rest.

“It’s about playing with freedom, no pressure, no over-coaching from us. They decide who the starting line-up is. We just run the rotation, so that it’s equal for everyone. They must work it out.”

Van der Merwe said Hilton’s approach had also changed since their first outing against Garsfontein, and it had served them well. He explained: “In our first game against Garsfontein, we tried to play too pretty, and we weren’t taking enough shots on goal. After game one against them, we decided there was too much structure, and it’s not the format of this game. It’s about expression, taking shots from anywhere.”

That was one of the standout features of the tournament: players prepared to take shots from anywhere on the court, which is allowed in Hockey 5s. There were some crackers scored from range and the players found themselves rewarded for being willing to have a go.

Clifton College enjoyed a good tournament, playing some exciting hockey, and claimed third place, edging out Michaelhouse on a penalty shootout for a second time in the tournament.

Kearsney, meanwhile, would have enjoyed getting one over their neighbours, Westville, winning it 4-3 from the spot, after the sides had played to a 3-3 draw, to grab fifth place. St Alban’s ran out 5-1 winners over Ashton to secure seventh.

    Girls’ High School matches

In the girls’ competition, Danville Park Girls’ High had an opportunity to play for the title for a second year in succession when they won their way through to the final. Their opponents in the title-decider were St Mary’s DSG, who had comfortably beaten Danville 5-1 in pool play earlier in the day.

Danville Park Girls' High School put a loss to St Mary's DSG in pool play behind them to upset Saints in the girls' hockey school final.

The girls from the north of Durban rose to the challenge, however, and lifted themselves for one last tilt, with the silverware on the line.

In a tight contest, Danville battled for every ball and when the whistle sounded to end regulation time, the teams were deadlocked at 1-1.

From there, it was off to a penalty shootout and when the all-action Codie Bestbier, who epitomised the fighting spirit of her side, took her opportunity, Danville, like Hilton College, had reversed an earlier loss to their final’s opponent.

Beaten 5-3 in the 2023 final by St Anne’s, Danville didn’t allow a second title-winning chance to pass them by.

It's joy for Danville as they capture the Kearsney Hockey 5s title a year after falling in the 2023 final.

In front of a jam-packed roaring crowd filled with maroon blazers, second half strikes from Reuben Sendzul and Luke Oliver secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory for Paul Roos Gimnasium (PRG) over Grey College in a highly anticipated inter-schools derby on Friday night on the Maties AstroTurf in Stellenbosch.

Sendzul slotted a penalty stroke in the third chukka and Olivier put the cherry on the top for the home team with a late goal in fourth chukka.

Both sides were confident ahead of the showdown after both had produced outstanding seasons.

The hosts had lost only twice all season long, going down to Rondebosch Boys’ High in April before falling to South African College High School (SACS) a month later.

However, both of those defeats were on the road. At home, coach Michael Baker’s charges owned a pristine record.

Playing in Stellenbosch, they had overrun Wynberg Boys’ High 7-1, handed Paarl Boys’ High a 4-0 loss, defeated Bishops Diocesan College 2-0, cruised to an 8-0 win over Somerset College, and played to an enthralling 2-2 draw with SACS last month.

Baker, who introduced his philosophy of “Baker Ball” at Paul Roos this year had led PRG to an impressive season in his first as head of the hockey programme at the school, but one final hurdle awaited in the form of Grey College.

The Bloemfontein boys were eager to take a shot at Paul Roos after suffering a narrow 1-2 defeat in their derby in 2023. Their form was strong. In a midweek match, they had beaten Fichardtpark 4-0 to retain their Bloemfontein league title.

Before that success, they had finished as the runners-up at the Guschkie u18 Top Schools Tournament, going down 0-1 to Northwood School in the final.

However, a 1-0 victory Grey High, a 2-1 defeat of Affies, a 5-3 win over Selborne College in East London, and a 1-1 draw with Paarl Gimnasium would’ve assured coach Wayne Coetzee’s team that they could spoil the home side’s party.

In the first half of the contest on Friday evening, Grey successfully restricted Paul Roos, with their skipper Jaydon Leech and Wian du Plooy controlling matters for the visitors at the back.

There were opportunities for the adversaries to score in the second quarter, when both were awarded a penalty corner.

For PRG, a variation between Sendzul, and Christo Swanepoel was well handled by Grey, while Beor van Reenen made a spectacular save to keep out Matthias Visser’s drag flick on the other side of the turf.

Sendzul thought he had opened the scoring early in the third chukka after a thunderous reverse stick shot found its way into the back of the net. However, the goal was disallowed.

Minutes later, a scorching run by Barend Geldenhuys near the baseline forced the visitors into committing a foul, and the umpire signalled a penalty corner.

From the set piece, Sendzul’s drag flick struck Du Plooy’s arm on the goal line, and a penalty stroke was awarded. Sendzul took on the responsibility of handling the stroke and scored despite Wildré Lloyd diving in the right direction.

With one quarter to play, PRG held a 1-0 lead, but Grey kept probing as the game opened up. However, a late strike by Oliver, with less than two minutes remaining, sealed the win for Paul Roos.

“We knew it was going to be a physical game in the opening two chukkas and we would have to remain composed,” Sendzul told SuperSport Schools Plus after the match.

“We had to stick to our game plan. We had about two weeks to prepare for this game. We analysed Grey a lot, and I think what’s important is that when we got the opportunities we converted.

“The Grey boys always come out hard, and they fought again for their school, but I’m happy for the [Paul Roos] boys.”

Sendzul is one of nine players who will bid PRG farewell at the end of the year.

He, Beor van Reenen, Hano Basson, Louan van Zyl, Daniel Lurie, Keith Siebrits, Joshua Smit, Barend Geldenhuys, and Luke Oliver won their final caps for the Stellenbosch school.

The skipper believes that after an exceptional season, the seniors have succeeded in leaving the jersey in a “better place”.

“We spoke about leaving the jersey in a better place and we set standards for ourselves at the beginning of the season,” he said.

“For us to be able to get the outcome in this game means we’ve left it in a better place.

“I’m sure it will inspire the next generation into believing that we do indeed have one of the best hockey programmes in the country,” he concluded.

SA u18 make wholesale changes for England clash

SA Under-18 coach James Winstanley has made 10 rotational changes to his starting team from the side that beat Ireland, for Tuesday’s u18 International Series clash with England at Paarl Boys’ High School.

The South Africans scored a superb victory over a strong Irish outfit on Friday at Paarl Gimnasium, and according to Winstanley, the changes are intentional so that everyone in the squad get a start in their two matches.

Only two backs are retained for the final encounter of the series with England, in Akha Boqwana (fullback) and Khutadzo Rashivhaga (right wing).

Upfront, SA u18 captain Sethu Mnebelele (hooker) earns his second start, while the talented Riley Norton also gets another start at lock, as does Reuben Kruger at No 8.

Reflecting on their victory over Ireland, Winstanley said he was immensely proud of the team’s performance: “We had to dig deep at times particularly when reduced to 13 men, which was a testament to the team’s character.

“We looked very dangerous when we had the ball, scoring five superb tries, however, we will need to improve our discipline and set pieces if we are to overcome England.

“There is a fantastic rivalry that has developed between us over the last few years, and we know that they will produce their best performance come Tuesday.”

Reacting to the numerous changes, Winstanley explained it was always part of the plan.

“We are very fortunate to have an abundance of depth in our team and so there are ten changes to the starting team for this game reflecting the strength of the squad,” said Winstanley.

The match starts at 13h30 and will be broadcast live on the SuperSport Schools platforms. Ireland and Georgia will clash in the other match, starting at 15h30.

SA u18 team to face England in Paarl:

15 Akha Boqwana, 14 Khutadzo Rashivhaga, 13 Ethan Adams, 12 Janco Purchase, 11 Cheswill Jooste, 10 Vusi Moyo, 9 Adeeb Boraine, 8 Reuben Kruger, 7 Josh Neill, 6 Torren February, 5 Riley Norton, 4 AJ Meyer, 3 Aidan Botha, 2 Sethu Mnebelele (captain), 1 Phiwayinkosi Kubheka. Replacements: 16 Mahle Sithole, 17 Oliver Reid, 18 Luqobo Makadweni, 19 JD Hattingh, 20 Alutha Wesi, 21 Ellie Meyer, 22 Yaqeen Ahmed, 23 Pieter van der Merwe, 24 Joshua Mackenzie, 25 Markus Muller, 26 Zekethelo Siyaya.
